A soldier who lost both his legs after being blown up in Afghanistan is racing a sports car in his hometown this weekend.

Remarkably David Birrell will not only drive the Mazda MX5 but he does without any specially adapted equipment.

Davie, 28, has battled back from terrible injuries after a bomb blew up directly below him. He gave himself first aid and fired at Taliban(塔利班) fighters until help arrived. Davie, a corporal(下士)in the Black Watch, was in Helmand in April 2010 when his interpreter stood on the bomb. He said,“I was confused and went blank(空白) for a couple of seconds. There was dust in the air and I couldn’t see. Both legs were still attached but there were massive injuries to my right leg and my left foot was broken.”As the Taliban began firing he returned fire and waited for help. He added,“A medical team came over. I was taken back to Camp Bastion by helicopter. I was there for two days before being flown to hospital in Birmingham.”

As computers become all the more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(筆畫)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.

Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their homework and essays are typed on a computer.

All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.

It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.

“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”

“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”

Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and quick to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei , the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(審美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only have their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion(情緒). Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”

To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

1.The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because______.

2. Which of the following statements of the advantages of handwriting is NOT TRUE ?

A. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.

B. Handwriting can impress people well and build up one’s self-confidence.

C. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotion.

D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.

3.The underlined expression “taking stock in”(Paragraph 4) probably means __________.

A. getting bored with B. getting curious about

C. becoming crazy about D. getting dependent on

4.We can infer from the passage that __________.

A. writing by hand will give way to typing by computer one day

B. more and more students will give up writing on a computer

C. more and more students will pay attention to handwriting

D. the typed article better expresses one’s emotion and quality

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents' house for our annual Christmas dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was there, standing outside the closed gas station.

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff for my grandparents' house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned in the middle of the road and said, "I can't stand it!"

"What?" asked my mother.

"It's those people back there at the gas station, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's Christmas. "

When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children- two girls and a small boy.

My father rolled down his window. "Merry Christmas," he said.

"Howdy," the man replied.

"You’re waiting on the bus?" my father asked.

The man said that they were.

"Well, that bus isn't going to come along for several hours, and you're getting wet standing here. Winborn's just a couple miles up the road. They've got a shed with a cover there, and some benches," my father said. "Why don't y'all get in the car and I'll run you up there."

The man thought about it for a moment, and then he beckoned to his family. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing.

Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder and asked the children if Santa had found them yet. Three glum faces mutely gave him his answer.

"Well, I didn't think so," my father said, winking at my mother, "because when I saw Santa this morning, he told me that he was having trouble finding all, and he asked me if he could leave your toys at my house. We'll just go get them before I take you to the bus stop."

All at once, the three children's faces lit up, and they began to bounce around in the back seat, laughing and chattering.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door and straight to the toys that were spread out under our Christmas tree. That was the Christmas when my sisters and I learned the joy of making others happy.

When they left, my father reached into his pocket and pulled out two dollars, which was all he had left. He pressed the money into the man's hand. The man tried to give it back, but my father insisted. “Take it. I've been broke before, and I know what it's like when you can't feed your family." We left them there at the bus stop in Winborn. As we drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at the little girl hugging her new doll.
