“A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smart phone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website” is the definition of “selfie” in the Oxford English Dictionary. In fact, it wasn't even in the dictionary until August of last year. It earned its place there because people are now so obsessed with (對……癡迷) selfies ─ we take them when we try on a new hat, play with our pets or when we meet a friend whom we haven't seen in a while.
But is there any scientific explanation for this obsession? Well, you should probably ask James Kilner, a neuroscientist(神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)科學(xué)家) at University College London.
Through our lifetime we become experts at recognizing and interpreting other people's faces and facial expressions. In contrast, according to Kilner, we have a very poor understanding of our own faces since we have little experience of looking at them ─ we just feel them most of the time.
This has been proved in previous studies, according to the BBC.
Kilner found that most people chose the more attractive picture. This suggests that we tend to think of ourselves as better-looking than we actually are. To further test how we actually perceive our own faces, Kilner carried out another study. He showed people different versions of their own portrait ─ the original, one that had been edited to look less attractive and one that was made more attractive ─ and asked them to pick the version which they thought looked most like them. They chose the more attractive version.
But what does it say about selfies? Well, isn't that obvious? Selfies give us the power to create a photograph ─ by taking it from various angles, with different poses, using filters (濾色鏡) and so on ─ that better matches our expectations with our actual faces.
“You suddenly have control in a way that you don't have in non-virtual(非虛擬的) interactions," Kilner told the Canada-based CTV News. Selfies allow you “to keep taking pictures until you manage to take one you're happy with”, he explained.
1.What is the passage mainly about?
A. The definition and fun of taking selfies.
B. A study of why people love taking selfies.
C. How taking selfies influences people’s daily lives.
D. How to interpret people’s facial expressions in their selfies.
2.The underlined word “perceive” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “______”.
A. interpret B. beautify C. choose D. explain
3.What did Kilner discover from his researches?
A. People tend to believe they look more attractive than they actually are.
B. People tend to spend more time looking at their faces than at others’.
C. People interpret others’ facial expressions worse than their own.
D. People who like taking selfies know more about their facial expressions.
4.According to Kilner, people like taking selfies probably because they think ______.
A. it is a good chance to learn more about their actual faces
B. it allows them to satisfy their expectations with their appearances
C. it enables them to interact with their friends in social media
D. it is a way to respond to others’ facial expressions correctly

I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching (緊握) my fists with impatience.
At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for' the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.
It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.
It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.
1.Why did the author feel impatient while driving?
A. Because he had already driven for a long time.
B. Because it was too far away from his destination.
C. Because something urgent happened in his family.
D. Because he could not overpass a truck on a narrow road.
2.The author stopped at the traffic light because .
A. there were passers-by crossing the road
B. some policemen were on duty just at that point
C. the trust between people influenced the author
D. there was potential danger
3.What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases?
A. A11 the things would run normally.
B. The social system would be thrown into disorder.
C. The social traditions would be abandoned.
D. Strict rules and laws would be made.
4.What is the theme of the passage?
A. Mutual Trust is the best policy.
B. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. Among the blind the one-eyed is the king.

If something that you're doing doesn't challenge (向…挑戰(zhàn)) you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all. 1. So challenge the following limits:
1. Figure out what you're scared of and do it continuously.
If you're a salesman, and you're scared of talking to people personally or over the phone, now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call. 2. But don't stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eyes and say, "Go on, I'm not scared!"
2. Take a class for a hobby you've been wanting to develop.
Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while doing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. You will challenge yourself by learning something new. 3.
3. 4.
You don't need to go to the gym. A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself.
Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.
4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.
5. try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class. Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.
