Around 55%of people aged 18—34 in Spain are still living in their parents’ homes. The Spanish Government is so worried that it has decided to help them leave the nest.To persuade young people to leave their homes, the Youth Institute started a“Youth Emancipation(解放)”program this month, which offers guidance in finding rooms and jobs.
Economists say young people’s family dependence is caused by job-loss and the increasing housing prices.
Cultural reasons also lead to the problem, say sociologists.Family ties in south Europe-Italy,Portugal and Greece-are stronger than those in middle and north Europe, for example,F(xiàn)inland.
In Spain, especially in the countryside,it is common to find entire groups of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews all living on the same street. They regularly get together for Sunday dinner.
Parents’ tolerance(寬容)is another reason.Spanish parents accept late-night partying and are wary of setting bedtime rules.“A child can arrive home at whatever time he wants. If parents are dissatisfied with him,he’ll put up a big fight and call the father a Fascist(法西斯),”a sociologist at Carlos University in Madrid said.
Mothers’ willingness to do everything for children worsens the problem.Dionisio Masso,a 60-year-old woman in Madrid, has three children in their 20s.The eldest,28,has fl girlfriend and a job.But life with mum is good.“His mum does the wash and cooks for him;in the end,he lives well,”Masso said.
