This is my third story. When I was 17,I read a quote(引用) that something like,If you live each day it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right. Since then, for the past thirty?three years,I’ve looked the mirror every morning and asked myself:If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a ,I know I need to change something.

About a year ago I was with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should to live no longer than three to six months. They advised me to go home and get my in order, which is doctors’ practice for prepare to .Later that evening when the doctors the cells taken from my pancreas(胰腺)under a microscope, they started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is with surgery(外科手術).I had the surgery and, ,I’m fine now.

That was the closest I had been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Death is the we all share. No one has escaped it. And that is it should be,because death is very likely the single invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make for the new. Your time is ,so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma(信條)—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to your heart and intuition(直覺).They already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

It was time for a school holiday and I was at home. My family’s house was located in (位于) an area by the sea.

I just sat down in front of the television. Suddenly I heard a loud noise and then the first shock started to hit. My mom and I ran to the front door. We got out and we were standing in the street holding on to each other to stand up. The ground was covered with snow. I could remember watching black cracks in the earth snaking their way along the ground. A tree in our back yard was actually cut in half.

As suddenly as the earthquake started, it was over. Dead silence. Then a light snow began to fall. All the power was off—no radio, no TV and no communication with the outside world. We found out later that the ground area was lowered an average of 35 feet.

My dad succeeded in getting home from where he worked in the city centre. Later that evening we were told to leave the area because a terrible ocean wave was expected. We spent the night and the next day and night away from home at the shelter.

I often think about the courage my dad showed during that time. Before Dad retired, he was a senior manager of a famous local company. This company was damaged because of the quake. Dad stayed in the company to rebuild the business and rebuild our family home.

1.In which season did the earthquake take place?

Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together.Others say that the opposite is true;that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murder of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by less incidents caused principally by minor national contests.

One country received its second?place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey(曲棍球) match, the losers objecting to the final decisions. They were convinced that one of their goals should not have been disallowed and that their opponents’(對手) victory was unfair. Their manager was in a rage when he said,“This isn’t hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(中止) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play.A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury(評審委員會)debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non?national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism(愛國主義).

1.The author thinks that in recent years Olympic Games have________.

A.showed little international friendship

B.greatly encouraged international brotherhood

C.created goodwill between the nations

D.created only misunderstanding and hatred

2.What did the manager mean by saying “This isn’t hockey.Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” in Paragraph 2?

A.This is not a standard hockey match.

B.The federation would not exist any longer after this match was over.

C.His team would not enter the game in three years.

D.The unfair decision ruined both hockey and the Federation.

3.The basketball match showed that________.

A.a(chǎn)ggressive patriotism was shown in the incident

B.the Russian team should not have taken advantage of the last three seconds

C.the appeal jury was too inefficient in making a decision

D.the American team should have taken the first place

4.The author gives two examples in the 2nd and the 3rd paragraphs in order to show that________.

A.contests often end in disorder

B.no contests are fair in the Olympic Games

C.competition discourages international friendship

D.unfair decisions are common in sports

5.Which statement best summarizes this passage?

A.Athletes should compete as individuals.

B.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

C.Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.

D.Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.
