I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside. She was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me. With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned(皺眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical (呆板的) pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant. “Like a story. Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’ horse sees her plight (困境) and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. Luckily, they make it to the bank.” Pasha said.
I played many pieces of music that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.
1.By describing herself as a mechanical pianist, the author meant ________.
A. she could remember the notes in a short time
B. she was playing the piano without emotion
C. her fingers couldn’t move freely
D. it had been a long time since she played last time
2.Which of the following can best describe Pasha?
A. Creative.B. Honest.C. Humorous.D. Brave.
3.Pasha’s magic of playing the piano lies in that she ________.
A. imagined herself as a princess
B. knew its original background story
C. had a strong desire to make a friend
D. combined the music with a story
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A Friend Forever
B. Never Give up
C. A Piano Lesson
D. My Favorite Piece of Music

Security guard, truck driver, salesperson—year after year, these jobs appear on lists of the unhappiest careers. Although many factors can make a job unhappy, unusual hours, low pay, no chance for advancement — these three gigs stand out for another reason: a lack of small talk.
Psychologists have long said that connecting with others is central to well-being, but just how much conversation we require is under investigation. In one study, researchers eavesdropped(竊聽(tīng)) on undergraduates for four days, then cataloged each overheard conversation as either small talk (What do you have there? Popcorn?(Yummy!) or serious (So did they get divorced soon after?). They found that the second type related with happiness—the happiest students had roughly twice as many serious talks as the unhappiest ones. Small talk, meanwhile, made up only 10 percent of their conversation, versus almost 30 percent of conversation among the least content students.
However, don't just consider chat worthless yet. Scientists believe that small talk could promote linking. Chatting with strangers could brighten your morning. In a series of experiments, psychologists gave Chicago travelers varying directions about whether to talk with fellow train passengers something they typically avoided. Those told to chat with others reported a more pleasant journey than those told to enjoy your being alone or to do whatever they normally would. None of the chatters reported being rejected. And the results held for introverts(內(nèi)向者) and extroverts(外向者) alike which makes sense, since acting extroverted has a positive effect on introverts.
Small talk can also help us feel connected to our surroundings. People who smiled at, made eye contact with, and briefly spoke with their Starbucks reported a greater sense of belonging than those who rushed through the business. Similarly, one not yet published paper found that when volunteers broke the silence of the Tate Modern to chat with gallery goers, the visitors felt happier and more connected to the exhibit than those who were not approached.
So go ahead, pry. Chitchat needn’t be idle. And nosiness isn’t all bad.
1.The author attributes the unhappiness felt by security guards, truck drivers and sales people to ________.
A. unusual hours and low pay
B. a lack of small talk
C. no chance for advancement
D. an absence of serious conversation
2.What was the conclusion of the study mentioned in the second paragraph?
A.Connecting with others is central to our well-being.
B.We require 30 minutes of conversation every day to be happy.
C.Serious conversation is linked to happiness.
D.Small talk cannot help make us feel happy.
3.The author used the Tate Modern example to demonstrate that ________.
A. connecting with others is key to our happiness
B. unserious conversation could promote bonding
C. small talk can help us feel connected to our surroundings
D. smiling can help people gain a great sense of belonging
4.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?

For the Travel section, writers and editors selected special items to profile from a dozen cities.
Brussels:Chocolate
Nearly half the chocolate consumed in the world is eaten in Europe, and Belgium—with average consumption of 14.99 pounds per person a year—certainly covers its fair share. While Brussels, the country’s capital, is home to hundreds of chocolate makers, what makes a visit necessary is the rich heritage of traditional chocolate makers.
Budapest: Paprika (紅辣椒)
The job of preparing Hungarian paprika was once considered too dangerous for mothers to do. A woman who touched her children upon returning from work risked burning them, so only the elderly and unmarried were allowed the delicate task of separating the skin from the flesh. But by the early 20th century, sweeter varieties and a machine turned paprika into a common feature of all Hungarian cuisine.
Lisbon: Tiles (瓷磚)
Is there a bluer Country than Portugal? The blue sky and Atlantic Ocean embrace the land. The blue moods of Fado, the dark folk music, form the national soundtrack. And all across Portugal, the typically blue designs of azulejos—ceramic tiles—are spread across churches, castles, palaces, university halls, parks... The result is a beautiful land of Christian saints, Portuguese kings, historical glories, aristocrats at leisure, seascapes and so on.
Madrid: Guitars
Walking into one of Madrid’s storied guitar makers’ workshops can feel like stepping into the past. Curly wood shavings, from the palest pine to ebony, fall onto the floor as artisans turn some humble wood into works of art. It’s painstaking work—all done by hand—with classical guitar models and the methods of making them changing little over the last century.
1.What does the job of preparing Hungarian paprika suggest?
A. The popularity of Hungarian peppers.
B. The difficulty of processing peppers.
C. The unique tradition in Budapest.
D. The hot level of Hungarian peppers.
2.Which city can be a splendid setting for a film?
A. Brussels.B. BudapestC. LisbonD. Madrid.
3.What’s the similarity of the four items?
A. They’re all treasures of a city.
B. They all date back to several centuries.
C. Their production processes are all painstaking.
D. They all win popularity in most European countries.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016-2017學(xué)年山東棗莊八中東校區(qū)高二12月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
In the English language there are striking similarities to many of the characteristics present in Spanish, French, and German. So what are the things that make English so difficult for foreign people to learn?
English doesn’t necessarily have more regular consonant(輔音) or vowel(元音) sounds than other languages, but how the stress is placed on some of those consonants or vowels makes it such a difficult language for learners. There are hard and soft consonants like “c” taking on a “k” sound or an “s” sound depending upon the situation. There are silent letters in some words and then some consonants that take on an entirely different sound ( like “th” ) when combined. The changes in the pronunciation of words make English much more difficult to learn.
Another thing that makes English difficult to learn has to do with verb tense. Some languages have very limited changes in verb tense, sometimes just present and past, which makes it relatively simple to grasp. English, on the other hand, is a bit more difficult in this area. For example, in different situations it may be proper to use any of the following tenses: present, past, future, past perfect or present perfect. The verb “choose” can be used in the following forms depending on tense: choose, chose or chosen. This can be very difficult for a foreigner to grasp.
Slang(俚語(yǔ)) is more widely used in American English than proper grammar. In the US just knowing the language as it’s generally taught isn’t enough. In every single region or even close neighborhoods, the same slang terms make an almost entirely different language. In some areas there are repeatedly used terms that wouldn’t even be found in the Webster’s Dictionary. They are created by locals and only locals understand them. This can make it very difficult for someone not familiar with the language to get used to it, especially if they don’t remain in one area for a very long period.
1.The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. tell us how to deal with slang terms in English
B. encourage us to speak formal English
C. tell us why English is very difficult to learn
D. give advice on how to learn English well
2.According to the passage, the letter “c” in English ________.
A. is often silent
B. has at least two sounds
C. never takes on an “s” sound
D. is always stressed
3.Compared with other languages, ________.
A. English has very limited changes in verb tense
B. English has relatively simple verb tense to grasp
C. English has more forms of verbs according to the tense
D. English has three more verb tenses
4.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. pronunciation is the most difficult thing in English learning
B. all the slang terms should be added to the Webster’s Dictionary
C. if you want to learn English well you first should learn some slang terms
D. people may understand the local language after living in a place for years
