Some years ago, I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started, “Dear John, I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “we’re kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.” Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.
So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don’t just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures.
Some of these differences may be only on the surface—dress, food and hours of work-while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate, while getting on with business.
Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite; the service is better; you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality(準(zhǔn)時). If you invite people to a party at 7 o’clock, your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest, an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “l(fā)ate” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.

Ugly, a male cat, loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and, shall we say, love. To start with, he had only one eye and where the other should have been was a big hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, and his left foot appeared to have been badly broken at one time, making him look like he was always turning the corner. Every time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction.“That’s one UGLY cat!”So, all the children were warned not to touch him. The adults threw rocks at him. Whenever he was treated badly, he would curl his thin body around feet in forgiveness or begged for love.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbor’s dog. The dog's owner did not respond kindly. From my apartment I could hear his screams, and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was lying, it was apparent Ugly’s sad life was almost at an end. As I picked him up and tried to carry him home, I could hear his heavy breath, and could feel him struggling. It must be hurting him terribly.
However, Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying, was trying to get closer to me. He turned his one golden eye towards me, and even in the greatest pain Ugly was asking only for a little affection. At that time I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time afterwards. Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures, or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. It is time for me to learn to love truly and deeply.

For many the idea of your dream home is not buying a bigger home, but a home that you have built by yourself. A house that is unique and fit for your tastes and your lifestyle. It sounds great but where do you begin to design your dream home? Here is a quick guide that can help you make your dreams come true.
The first step is to get an idea of what type of home you want. You can get inspiration from others. Drive around to neighbourhoods that have the styles of homes you like and take pictures. You can also cut out pictures from magazines, newspapers, or print out pictures you find on the Internet.
The next step will be to make two lists of items for yourself. The first list will be those items or features that you feel your new home must have, such as granite counter tops or a hot water heater. The second list will be those items or features that are on your wish list like a fireplace or slate floors.
At this point you will probably have a good idea of what your dream home will look like, so you will need to seek some professional help. You will need to hire an architect to put your ideas down on paper. You may need to interview a few different architects to find one that you are comfortable with. Make sure whomever you choose for final drawings has a full understanding of local building codes and zoning bylaws. In any ease your final plan will need to be approved by the city and a building permit must be obtained before any construction can begin.
It is time to look for a contractor(承包人). Whichever way you can do it in, be sure you are comfortable with your contractor and you have got references from his past clients. Remember the more homework you do in the beginning, the more enjoyable the process will be.

A 14-year-old girl was attacked by a grey bear while competing in a bike race. She managed to whisper the “bear” to her rescuer. The girl had serious head, neck and leg wounds. Now she is in a dangerous condition in hospital.
The girl was taking part in a 24-hour race through Bicentennial Park in Alaska when she was attacked by the bear. Bicentennial Park is next to Chugach State Park where some wild animals live.
The animal attacked the girl in a heavily wooded area at about 1:30 am. The girl called emergency services but she was unable to say any word. Another rider Peter Basinger found her lying unconscious on the ground. He told Anchorage Daily News that she managed to say the word “bear” when he stopped to help. Her helmet (頭盔)had been knocked off in the attack and rolled into the woods. Mr Basinger waited with the girl for about 20 minutes until doctors arrived. Armed police travelled 3 km with doctors to pick up the girl.
Animal expert Rick Sinnot said something must be done as soon as possible to prevent the bear from attacking people again. “It was extremely terrifying,” he said.
Mr Sinnot told Anchorage Daily News that the bear might be a mother. It hurt two runners on a nearby path two weeks ago. He also said that the girl was lucky to have been wearing a bike helmet because the bear had bitten her head several times.

The people of Dubai have extended their reach-into the sky. In January, the world’s tallest building opened there. The skyscraper, called the Burj Khalifa, is 162 stories high, with 60-mile views from the top of the tower. At 2,717 feet, the structure stands more than 1,000 feet taller than the last tallest building, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan.
After five years of construction, the Buji Khalifa opened with a party. But now the tower is getting down to business. The skyscraper has 37 floors of office space and 1,000 apartment. It will house the world’s largest mall. The owners hope that eventually more than 12,000 people will live and work in the 6 million square feet inside the building.
The Burj Khalifa was originally named the Burj Dubai, or Dubai Tower, after the region where it was built. Dubai is a sheikdom (酋長國) which is part of the United Arab Emirates. Recently, Dubai needed a loan. Sheik Khalifa, President of the United Arab Emirates and sheik of neighboring Abu Dhabi, helped out. Burj Dubai was renamed Burj Khalifa in his honor.
The towering structure has broken a number of records besides the record for height. It has the world’s highest swimming pool, on the 123rd floor. It also has the world’s highest outdoor observation deck: Visitors can stand in the open air 124 stories above ground. Fifty-four elevators race up and down, going as fast as 40 miles an hour. Should the elevators stop working, 3,000 stairs go from top to bottom. And when it’s time to clean the windows, 36 workers will spend about three months washing them.
Reaching half a mile into the sky, the Burj Khalifa soars over even the world’s other highest skyscrapers. Its height outstrips the Taipei 101 by 60 stories. It stands more than 1,100 feet taller than China’s Shanghai World Financial Center. And Dubai’s new tower dwarfs one of the most famous skyscrapers of all: it stands more than twice as high as the Empire State Building in New York City, the world’s tallest building for more than 40 years.
