Your children’s teacher will be providing extra time for test preparation. This school year’s test will be held on January 8 and 9. The test preparation time is open to all students, and we strongly encourage your children to attend.

This year we are changing the time for our test preparation: it will be on Thursday mornings from 8:10 to 8:50. This helps children who ride the bus and cannot stay for the after-school period. It also helps avoid conflicts with after-school activities.

Danielle and Marina will be working with the recent new test takers 6 days on the following Thursdays: 15th, Nov; 29th, Nov; 6th, Dec; 13th, Dec.; 20th, Dec. and 3rd, Jan.

Besides the test preparation lectures on these dates, teachers are already putting test preparation into their usual courses. We are finding that we can help our students to be both skillful and whole-hearted readers and test takers — after all, we all know that the best test preparation is good reading and writing training.

What can you do at home? Again, the best and most effective test preparation for the ELA test is reading and more reading. The research is quite clear — students who do well in the tests are those who are good readers. Reading not only builds reading ability, it also helps build confidence — important for successful test taking! But do discourage your children from spending too much time on books that are too hard or even a bit too hard. Children best develop comprehension skills when they are reading books just right for them (too easy doesn’t hurt here either).

Finally, on Friday, December 7, we will have a morning lecture on the ELA. Please pay attention!

1.The text is mainly about ________.

   A. how teachers will provide more time for test preparation

   B. the reason why time for test preparation will be changed

   C. how teachers have put test preparation into their usual courses

   D. test preparation information that parents should know about

2.The time for test preparation has been changed to _________.

   A. make it more convenient for the students to attend

   B. help the new test-takers have more time to read

C. avoid disagreement in time between different years of students

   D. avoid conflicts between preparation time and the usual courses

3.From the passage, we know that ________.

   A. Danielle will help students prepare for different tests

   B. the school year test will be on a Tuesday

   C. all the children must take part in the test preparation

   D. the students can learn how to write well in the test preparation

4. Parents should _____ at home.

   A. prepare good meals for their children

   B. read more books with their children

   C. ask their children not to spend too much time on reading

   D. encourage their children to read more books fit for them

5.Why did the school encourage all the students to take part in the test preparation?

   A. Test preparation is what they always do.

   B. The students will learn what will be included in the final exam.

   C. Test preparation helps students to be more interested in reading and confident.

   D. The test is a long way off and there are better things to do.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2014屆四川省高一3月月考英語(yǔ)試題 題型:閱讀理解

Ideas about polite behavior are different from one culture to another. Some societies, such as America and Australia, for example, are mobile and very open. People here change jobs and move houses quite often. As a result, they have a lot of relationships that often last only a short time, and they need to get to know people quickly. So it’s normal to have friendly conversations with people that they have just met, and you can talk about things that other cultures would regard as personal.

On the other hand, there are more crowded and less mobile societies where long–term relationships are more important. A Malaysian or Mexican business person, for example, will want to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to start business. But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes much deeper than it would in a mobile society.

To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal at first. On the other hand, as a passenger from a less mobile society puts it, it’s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you all about his or her life and asks you all sorts of questions that you don’t want to answer.

Cross-cultural differences aren’t just a problem for travelers, but also for the flights that carry them. All flights want to provide the best service, but ideas about good service are different from place to place. This can be seen most clearly in the way that problems are dealt with.

Some societies have “universalist” cultures. These societies strongly respect rules, and they treat every person and situation in basically the same way. “Particularist” societies, on the other hand, also have rules, but they are less important than the society’s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particular situation or a particular person. So the normal rules are changed to fit the needs of the situation or the importance of the person.

This difference can cause problems. A traveler from a particularist society, India, is checking in for a flight in Germany, a country which has a universalist culture. The Indian traveler has too much luggage, but he explains that he has been away from home for a long time and the suitcases are full of presents for his family. He expects that the check–in official will understand his problem and will change the rules for him. The check–in official explains that if he was allowed to have too much luggage, it wouldn’t be fair to the other passengers. But the traveler thinks this is unfair, because the other passengers don’t have his problem.

1.Often moving from one place to another makes people like Americans and Australians ______.

A.like traveling better

B.easy to communicate with

C.difficult to make real friends

D.have a long–term relationship with their neighbors

2. People like Malaysians prefer to associate with those ______.

A.who will tell them everything of their own

B.who want to do business with them

C.they know quite well

D.who are good at talking

3.Which of the following is true about “particularist societies”?

A.There is no rule for people to obey.

B.People obey the society’s rules completely.

C.No one obeys the society’s rules though they have.

D.The society’s rules can be changed with different persons or situations.

4. The writer of the passage thinks that the Indian and the German have different ideas about rules because of different ______.

A.interests

B.habits and customs

C.cultures

D.ways of life

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫(xiě)一篇150詞左右的英語(yǔ)短文。

Dear Patti,

I’m writing to you for some advice on my studies. As you know, football is a very popular sport in the world and I am attracted to it and I have fallen in love with it, which makes me feel so crazy. I have spending lots of time doing many things related to it, like watching football matches, reading newspapers and magazines, and searching the Web for more information about football. As a result, it has certainly disturbed my normal study. Though I know to be a football fan is my hobby and my major adjective is to learn more knowledge in school, I can’t concentrate on my lessons and gradually I am tired of them. I am still a senior two middle school student, and I’ll have my own business even when I grow up, so I am not likely to do a job in the field of football. But now I can’t stop myself from getting involved further with football. So I feel very depressed and want to know how to deal with the contradiction (矛盾. between my studies and boobies.)

Sincerely yours,

Li Ming

第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

Big things were happening in my life the summer I turned 13. In the middle of that summer, my parents shook my entire world and turned it upside down when they told me they were getting a divorce. I couldn't believe that our family was going to break up. Though I always knew my parents weren't very happy and they often fought, I still wanted my family to stay the same.

My life changed completely after the divorce. My mother and I moved into a small apartment across town, while my father and brother,Bill, stayed in our house.I now became a visitor whenever I went to see my dad and Bill on the weekends. And immediately I had my soon-to-be stepfather,Dan,whom I showed no interest in.I was clearly depressed, especially after Dan and my mother married and I realized that there was no way that things could change back to the way they had been.

Even though I resisted all Dan's attempts to get to know me and wasn't very nice to him, he never gave up on me. Gradually, I began to trust him. I realized that we actually had some things in common, especially when it came to movies and TV shows. We spent a lot of time together hanging out watching TV. That gave us a chance to talk and get to know each other.

Better still, Dan showed an interest in me that I had never experienced from my own father. Dan was always around when I needed advice on school or friends. Once I began to warm up to Dan, the three of us began spending a lot of time together. We often went out to eat and took short trips. Eventually, I discovered that I finally had the happy family that I had always wanted.

I now realize my parents were right about getting the divorce. Their breakup was the best thing to happen for all of us. My father also found happiness- he remarried and had another child, my half-sister, Michelle.

At 13, I learned an important truth-change is not always the worst thing that can happen. Sometimes, it is just what we need the most.
