【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。
When people think of Hollywood, they think of the city where dreams come true. This did not apply to F.Scott Fitzgerald, a screenwriter who had his share of ups and downs in this land. Fitzgerald was not a successful Hollywood writer because he was not good at the career path he chose. He was an amazing novelist, but his efforts of turning them into screenplays ended in disappointment and confusion. It was because of a lack of potential for screenwriting as well as his addiction and desire to be famous.
Growing up as a boy, Fitzgerald went to movies a lot.He wanted to write stories that would eventually turn into movies. The problem was: just because Fitzgerald wanted to do something didn’t necessarily mean that he was good at it.He made his attempts, but most of these efforts ended in disappointment because he thought about the change from script(劇本)to screen too much. His plot was too detailed and complicated; his tone was too serious or his dialogue too sentimental(感傷的).
Fitzgerald’s quick rise to fame also led to his fall.In life, things are not meant to happen all at once, all that the same time but it did for Fitzgerald. At his best time, three of his early stories were made into short films, including The Great Gatsby and Babylon Revisited. As the twenties approached, he was gradually forgotten by the reading public. He became drunk and constantly took pills both to sleep and wake up.His marriage was destroyed and his wife broke down mentally. He seemed unsure about his life.
Fitzgerald had another chance at success when many opportunities came his way, including revisions of Emlyn William’s play The Light of Heart and production of one of his own scripts, Cosmopolitan. However, these were all put aside and he was right back where he started, left behind and called a “ruined man”.Fitzgerald simply wanted too much in his life.He wanted “to be both a great novelist and a Hollywood success, to write songs like Cole Porter and poetry like John Keats”.His addiction to fame held him back and led to his failure as a Hollywood writer.

【題目】Katie was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with Katies; she was never ever a discipline(紀律) problem. I just couldn’t imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. "Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happened to your homemade lunch?" I asked. "I lose it," she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, "I don't believe you, Katie. " She didn't care. "Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?" I took a new track. "No. I just lose it," she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.
The problem was still unsolved the next week when I noticed a boy who was new to the school sitting alone at a lunch table. He always looked sad. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name on the bag said "Katie".
Now I understood and I talked to Katie. It seemed that the new boy never brought a lunch, and he wouldn't go to the lunch line for a free lunch. He had told Katie his secret and asked her not to tell anyone that his parents wanted him to get a free lunch at school. Katie asked me not to tell her parents, but I drove to her house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I had never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn't care that her parents and teacher were disappointed in her. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared.
Katie still buys lunch every day at school. And every day, as she heads out of the door, her mom hands her a delicious homemade lunch.

【題目】Greg Woodburn, a student at the University of Southern California, spends much time cleaning sneakers. Some once belonged to him; some were his friends. But soon they will have new owners; underprivileged children in the US and 20 other countries, thanks to Woodburn's Share Our Shoes (S. 0. S.) charity.
He was once a football star in high school. " I started thinking about all the things I got from running—the health benefits, the friendships, the confidence, " he says. “And I realized there are children who don't even have shoes.”
Woodburn gathered up his own slightly worn sneakers, then put out a call to teammates and the town. His goal was to have 100pairs by Christmas 2007. Surprisingly the count climbed to 500pairs. Back then, the sneakers came from donation boxes at the local sporting goods store and from door-to-door pickups. Woodburn has now set up collection boxes at two high schools. To date, S. 0. S. has collected and donated over 3,000 pairs.
Woodburn has cleaned almost all of them. “People think of it as dirty work, “He says.” But I like doing it. As I work, I imagine who will get each pair. “It takes three to five minutes to clean one pair, and he'll do up to 100 pairs at a time.
To ship the footwear, Woodburn teamed with Sports Gift, a nonprofit organization that provides soccer and baseball equipment to children around the world, whose founder and president said Greg's running shoes were a nice addition. For many recipients, the shoes represent opportunity. Two boys in Southern California attended school on alternate(間隔的)days because they shared a pair of shoes. They were too big for one boy and too small the other. Thanks to S. 0. S. ,each brother received his own pair of shoes. The boys now attend school daily. When they graduate, they say, they will help a stranger, just as Woodburn helped them.

【題目】For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone’s life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.
Out in the cold means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise---he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
【1】When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by “____”.
A.I think he is a cold fish
B.I give him the cold shoulder
C.I think he is a cold-blooded man
D.I’m likely to get cold feet
【2】If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say _________.
A. she is a cold fish B.she is out in the cold
C.she is a cold-blooded killer D.she gets cold feet
【3】We can use the expression “__________” to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.
A. cold feet B.cold shoulder
C.cold-hearted D.cold-blooded
【4】The topic of this passage is about _________.
A.some expressions about friendship
B.how cold weather comes into being
C.some expressions connected with cold
D.the relationship between cold and our body

【題目】Let These Plants Swat the Bugs for You Some plants get so hungry that they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What's more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they're found on every continent except Antarctica.
You've probably seen a Venus' flytrap. It's often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets. A small plant,it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (are specially modified leaves that act like traps. Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger (觸發(fā))hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shut. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch.
The Venus' flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice , the editor of the International Carnivorous Plant Society's Newsletter. Note: Despite any science-fiction stories (科幻小說)you might have read, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.
Dr. Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all four of the following:"attract, kill, digest, and absorb" some form of insect, including flies, butterflies, and moths. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants—well, most of the time.
All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis (光合作用). Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes "meat-eating" plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason : nitrogen (氮). Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can't obtain any other way. Why?
Almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil. "Meat-eating" plants can't. They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity (酸度). So they've come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to "meat-eating" plants. Never fertilize (施肥)them! But don't worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they'll grow very slowly.
【1】 Venus flytrap ______.
A. is a small plant which grows in a container
B. is a kind of plant which gets hungry easily

【2】 From the passage, we know ______.
A. "meat-eating" plants are found on every continent
B. all green plants get nitrogen from the soil
C. bug-catching leaves make "meat-eating" different from other plants
D. some "meat-eating" plants in the rainforest do danger to humans
【3】 "Meat-eating" plants grow very slowly, ______.
A. so you'd better fertilize them
B. probably because the source of nitrogen is cut off
C. simply because they can't absorb nitrogen from the soil
D. and then they will die slowly
【4】 Which of the following is true?
A. "Meat-eating" plants look and act like other green plants.
B. No insects, no "meat-eating" plants.
C. The reason why Venus flytrap needs flies is that it needs to get nutrient from them.
D. Green plants make sugar at night.
