Last Saturday, my parents and I paid visit to my grandparents by train. There was a
large number of people in the crowded train, but everyone help those who had lots of
baggage and behaved politely. Along the way, we enjoyed beautifully views. At first, we saw
one hill after another. Then what came into our eye were fields with green crops. In a six-hour
trip, we arrived at my grandparents’ house. Exhausted though I felt, but I was happy to see my
grandparents, which I hadn’t seen for a long time. It’s really an excited trip because it was the
first time I had taken so a long-distance train.

As my dad unwrapped(打開) the new bicycle helmet(頭盔)that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet.
Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have potholes and are torn-up (磨損的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets in many places.
Where I live, there has been a law in place since October 1, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required to wear helmets. Unfortunately, accidents can happen to the best of riders. My dad has been a cyclist for many years, and he often rides around my county and to Rockland Lake State Park.
One afternoon, as he was just entering the park, he lost control of his bicycle and flew off and landed on a nearby patch of grass, breaking his helmet into pieces and losing consciousness(知覺). When he was just awakening, a lovely couple found him and brought him back to our house, where he attempted to recap the events leading up to his fall. Later that day, a CAT scan showed that he had a concussion (腦震蕩). That evening, while my dad was showing me the pieces of his broken helmet, we both came to a shocking realization.
If he had not worn his helmet, he probably would have cracked his skull and perhaps died. Today, when my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone should wear a helmet whenever they get on a bicycle.
1.In the writer’s opinion, why should people wear bicycle helmets?
A. Because a law requires them to do so.
B. Because many people like wearing bicycle helmets.
C. Because people have realized the importance of wearing helmets.
D. Because the conditions of roads are very poor and it is dangerous to ride on them.
2.The underlined part “we both came to a shocking realization” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”.
A. we understood how lucky the dad was to have worn a helmet
B. we were shocked to see the broken helmet
C. we realized that young people needn’t wear helmets
D. only old people should wear helmets
3.From the accident that happened to the writer’s dad, we can infer that ___________.
A. the cyclists should follow the law
B. his dad was not worried about this accident
C. it is necessary for cyclists to wear helmets
D. everyone should care about life

Have you wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Birds, especially seagulls(海鷗) are very fond of locusts(蝗蟲), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops(莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe(成熟的), locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves, bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks(樹皮) of trees.
An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is over, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus,it has existed(存活)up to now though it is not powerful at all.
1.This passage mainly talks about ______.
A. the change of colour in locusts
B. the protective colouration of animals and pests
C. how a certain sea fish protects itself
D. animals or pests can dye themselves different colours
2.The pests that have different colours from plants usually appear at night because ______.
A. their enemies can easily find them and eat them
B. they have the habit of coming out in darkness
C. it’s easy for them to destroy plants in darkness
D. birds take their rests when night comes
3.What does the word “invisible” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Can’t be seen B. Can be seen
C. Can’t move D. Can’t change
