My hearing is getting worse every day and I fear by the time I'm twenty-one I will be fully deaf.It scares me very much.

Being deaf affects me  1  you might think.I've met some people who have    2   at me because I have "ignored" them. But in  3  fact.I didn't hear them.In school I often get told off (責(zé)罵)for  4   too loud, when in reality I don't realize it because I can't hear myself well.It makes me feel really  5  .I also can't participate in a lot of  6  , like canoeing or cross-country, because it's windy outside and this may affect my ears.I hate having to use these   7   and I often feel like   8   really gets me , so sometimes I feel a little bit lonely.

I get questions all the time,   9   "Why are you deaf?" and "What's that thing in your ear?" Even my friends don't 100% understand.Today, one of them said to me.“So what's going to happen when you go  10   deaf?” It really got to me.What will happen when I go fully deaf? Will I have a   11   life? I don't think I will.

Looking back  12   my childhood, I would say it was pretty much non-existent.It was full of hospital  13   and operations for grommets (devices that let the ear breathe)- and to make it  14   I had eye problems as well! I am the only one in my whole family who has any medical   15   .

When I was a child.I   16   to wear my hearing aids. This wasn't because they made my ears sweaty(出汗的) like the doctors thought,   17  because I was ashamed of them.Funnily enough, it was a big computer store that helped me overcome this because a woman behind the  18   had her hair cut short to  19  her hearing aids. She helped me  20  my self-confidence and now I realize it's okay that I wear them.

科目:高中英語 來源:2013屆山西省高二下學(xué)期3月月考英語試題 題型:閱讀理解

When I was three years old, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. But instead of sending me to a school for the deaf, they decided to “mainstream” me. All of my peers and teachers world have normal hearing.

I was the only deaf child at Blue Creel Elementary School. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked. And I also had difficulty with most of my school work.

When the other kids made fun of me, I was sure that I was a bad person. I saw myself as a boy who wasn’t smart enough to keep up with the class.

Mrs. Jordan, my 5th grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase.

One morning, she asked the class a question. I read her lips from my front-row seat and immediately raised my hand because I was sure I had the right answer. But when she called on me, I was afraid. Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and show her I was worthy of her love. Maybe even impress my classmates a little. I didn’t want to blow it. despite my fears, I took a deep breath and answered Mrs. Jordan’s question.

I will never forget what happened next. Mrs. Jordan enthusiastically slammed (跺動)her right foot on the floor and turned her tight hand around in full circle until it pointed directly at me. With sparking eyes and a wide smile she cried, “THAT’S RIGHT STEPHEN!”

For the first time in my young life, I was a star. I sat a little taller in my chair.

From that day forward, my grades and speech improved greatly. My popularity among my peers increased. It was all because Mrs. Jordan believed in me and wasn’t afraid to express it. “THAT’S RIGHT STEPHEN!”
