What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.

We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理學(xué)家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.

Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”

2.According to the context we can guess that a genius is ________ while an idiot is ________.

A. a normal person; a funny person

B. a strong person; a weak person

C. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person

D. a famous person; an ordinary person

3.A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.

A. whose parents are clever

B. often thinking about difficult problems

C. often helped by his parents and teachers

D. born with a good brain and putting it into active use

4.It is better for parents ________.

A. to praise and encourage their children more often

B. to be hard on their children

C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do

D. to give their children as much help as possible

5.Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?

A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.

C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.

1.在第一段“What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool?”中,作者指出有的人是intelligent,而有的人卻很笨,由此可知intelligent應(yīng)與fool意思相反,表示“聰明的”,與bright意思相近;我們都知道愛因斯坦是一位杰出的科學(xué)家,brilliant表示“杰出的”與splendid意思相近;第二段前部分說道只有不斷進(jìn)行思考的人,他們的大腦才會更加靈活,聰明,緊接著說“If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent”而另一方面,如果孩子們什么都不做,什么都不想,那么他們就會變得反映遲鈍!

文中第一段指出“What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein”意思是,是什么讓一個(gè)人成為一個(gè)天才,就像阿爾伯特? 所以這里的“genius”是指有高智商的人;由文章最后一段“if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things ”可知如果父母總說孩子笨或說他們是一個(gè)傻瓜,那么孩子就更有可能做一些愚蠢的事。

從最后一段中“So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”可以看出父母經(jīng)常對孩子傳達(dá)積極向上的思想,例如,鼓勵孩子,夸獎孩子,這樣更有助孩子的成長。所以選項(xiàng)A正確。

“I love you Bob.” “I love you too, Nancy.” It was 2 a.m., and I was hearing my parents’ voices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs. Their loving words were sweet, touching —and surprising.

My parents married on September 14, 1940, after a brief dating. She was nearly 30 and knew it was time to start a family. The handsome well-educated man who came by the office where she worked looked like a good bet. He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn’t last long.

Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel; he hated the thought. He loved golf; she did not. He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the shortcomings of their parents.

There was a hope that they would change once they retired (退休), and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness. “I always thought we’d …” my mother would begin, before making a detailed list of my father’s faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today. As he listened, my father would say something angrily in a low voice.

It wasn’t the happiest marriage, but as their 60th anniversary (紀(jì)念日) came nearer, my sister and I decided to throw a party. Sixty years was a long time, after all. Why not try to make the best of things? We’d provide the cakes, the balloons, the toasts, and they’d follow one rule: no fighting.

The agreement was honored. We had a wonderful day. When we thought back, we found it was an important celebration, because soon after, things began to change for my parents.

1.Bob married Nancy because of ______.

A. her nice appearance

B. her good education

C. her romantic nature

3.What do we know about the writer’s parents?

B. They had different hobbies.

C. They had serious money problem.

D. They stopped quarrelling after they had children.

4.The purpose for the writer to hold the party is ______.

A. to recall the 60 years’ marriage life of her parents

B. to stop the long fighting between her parents

C. just to celebrate her parents’ 60th anniversary

D. to have a good time for family’s reunion

5.Suppose this passage is taken from the Reader’s Digest, which column do you think it is taken from?
