We hear a lot about ten pregnancies and abortions. The word “abortion” brings varied images but the word “pregnancy” paints a baby. Everyone knows what a baby is but the difficult question is, when is a baby a baby?

In the first months of pregnancy, called the first trimester, vital organs are being formed. Three months after fertilization, the egg has already divided and is securely attached to the mother. Two weeks later, a simple brain, spine, nervous system and the beginning of some major organs are formed. By week seven, the face and other organs are forming and the heart starts to pump blood. A week later, the face is recognizable, and all the major internal organs are developed in their simple forms. The tongue is formed and fingers are distinct. It moves a lot but many women may not even know they are pregnant. By week twelve, all the internal organs are formed and most are working. Tiny little fingernails and toenails are growing and the baby can curl his toes, make a fist, frown, purse his lips, open and close his mouth, suck, swallow and urinate. Most abortion occurs during this stage of pregnancy.

In the second three months, the second trimester, eyebrows, eyelashes and hair are growing. The heart can be heard with a special device. Arms and legs are well developed. The baby is very active and can respond to noises outside the womb. By the end of this trimester, the limbs are well-developed and the baby tries them out regularly. He can also cough and hiccup. Some abortion are still performed at this stage of pregnancy.

In the final stretch before birth, the third trimester, the baby can already feel and respond very much like a full term baby. Born now, it can survive with special care. In some cases, abortions are still performed at this stage. In fact, in certain countries, partial birth aborted is practiced in which the baby is aborted prior to birth.

Killing a baby outside a mother’s womb, newborn or older, healthy or sickly, is a crime called infanticide. Thus arises the question of when does a baby’s life begin? When is abortion the scraping away of unwanted cells and when is it the snuffing out the flame of life? Is there a magical point somewhere in which a mass of cells becomes a rightful individual? Does birthing somehow mysteriously and instantly confer personhood to a fetus? Moreover, on whose definition and authority does a baby receive the right to complete its quest for life outside the womb? Truly, these are heart questions that each must answer.

First Man-Bear-Pig , and now global warming; it seems Al Gore never stops to surprise the world. Recently Al Gore produced them movie An Inconvenient Truth which explained the threats and told us how to control global warming. What it left out is that there is no proof that human activity is even causing global warming, let alone if global warming is even taking place.

Global warming is the idea that greenhouse gases that shut in infra-red(紅外線)radiation in the earth’s atmosphere are becoming more powerful and heating our planet up. The theory is that if the planet continues to heat up, the polar ice caps could melt and cover the earth in water.

Over the last 100 years the Earth has increased one degree in temperature, and sea level has risen millimeters. Even though this “eye-opening” news is taking place, there is no clear proof saying that it is due to global warming. It could be just a regular weather pattern the earth is circulating . The polar ice caps have not grown or reduced in size since man began tracking them. Also the ground-based temperature has remained the same besides growing cities. In fact most clues support the idea that global warming is not taking place and human activity isn’t causing any earth to melt down.

Although Al Gore insists the world is on its way to certain destruction, the facts say otherwise. It seems that driving to work won’t lead to the doom(末日)of mankind , and the movie Water World won’t be happening any time soon.

Wild elephants that destroy crops and damage trees are a serious problem in many parts of Africa . But there could be a simple and relatively safe way to stop them in their tracks , by employing the talents of the tiny African honeybees .

The number of elephants in Kenya has risen over the past ten years , with some disastrous results . Not only do these huge animals attack local farms , but they step someone to death an average of once every two weeks . Now a biologist has discovered a possible threat : the elephants are extremely aware of trees that house honeybee hives .

“I an puzzled why nobody has thought of this before , ” says Fritz Vollrath at the University of Oxford . “ When an elephant knocks a beehive he runs and the bees will follow him or miles . ” He says that placing hives of the honeybees around local farms and fragile habitats could be an effective way to threaten the animals .

Volirath put 30 unoccupied and 6 occupied beehives in some of the growing on a bush frequently damaged by elephants on Laikipia Plateau in Kenya . On average the elephants attacked 9 out of 10 trees that didn’t have hives , severely damaging a quarter . But they steered clear of all six trees with occupied hives . The elephants also left alone one-third of the trees with empty hives , suggesting that some had learnt not to take the risk .

The bees threaten elephants by stinging vulnerable (易受傷)areas such as the eyes , belly , behind the ears and under the trunk . People could be at risk from the bees , admits Voilrath , but that may be outweighed by the risk of being killed by an elephant . Another experiment by Voilrath shows that elephants also avoid the sound of angry bees played from a loudspeaker .

A.Let bees attack and kill elephants one by one

B.Encourage bees to sting elephants’ eyes and ears

4.From the passage we can conclude that _______

A.there is always one thing to bet another
