【題目】 The seabird population on a small British island off the coast Devon and South Wales has increased quickly following the removal of rats.
There has been a growth in the numbers of Manx shearwater, puffins and guillemots on Lundy Island 15 years after a conservation project to remove its rats ended. The project was launched ‘in 2003 by the Landmark Trust, the National Trust and The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds ((RSPB)) ), and aimed to kill the rats because they were the biggest threat to the survival of the birds. A cull (選擇性宰殺)costing 50,000 pounds was used to get rid of 40,000 rats on the island when puffin numbers fell to fewer than 10 pairs.
Helen Booker, senior conservation officer for RSPB in south-west England, said the organization is delighted with the results. This study clearly shows how quickly and positively seabirds respond to the removal of non-native predators (捕獵者)," she said. "Of course, we had expected major population increases when the project was launched, but the scale of this recovery has far beyond our expectations. "
Dean Jones, the inspector on Lundy, which is managed by the Landmark Trust, said the recovery of the seabirds was a positive, but that it is important to remain cautious."It is exciting to see this level of recovery in Manx shearwaters, one of our most important seabirds. In spring the island comes alive at night with the sound of these amazing birds. The increases in puffins, guillemots and razorbills are also very encouraging for the future of seabirds on Lundy and we are maintaining our attention to ensure rats cannot return to the island. "
A recent study found that nearly 10 percent of endangered bird, mammal, amphibian and reptile species could be saved by culling invasive (入侵的)mammals such as cats and rats on 169 islands. But rat removal programs have been controversial with some animal rights activists, who have argued that the black rat is one of the country’s most endangered mammals.
【1】Why did British carry out the project to remove rats?
A. To kill invasive species.B. To save seabirds in danger.
C. To keep balance in nature.D. To decrease the rat’s number.
【2】What can we infer about the rat removal project?
A. It is favored by animal rights groups.
B. It started when guillemot is nearly dying out.
C. It has protected 10% of species on UK’s 169 islands.
D. It contributes to more increases in seabirds than expected.
【3】What will be done next according to Dean Jones?
A. Plan the future of seabirds.B. Speed up the recovery of seabirds.
C. Keep a careful watch for rats.D. Continue to drive away rats and cats.

本文是一篇說(shuō)明文,主要介紹了英國(guó)通過(guò)實(shí)施滅鼠計(jì)劃使海鳥(niǎo)的數(shù)量大幅增加。
【1】細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段中的“and aimed to kill the rats because they were the biggest threat to the survival of the birds.”可知,老鼠是海鳥(niǎo)生存的最大威脅,所以英國(guó)實(shí)施滅鼠計(jì)劃是為了保護(hù)海鳥(niǎo),故B項(xiàng)正確。
【2】推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段中的“Of course, we had expected major population increases when the project was launched, but the scale of this recovery has far beyond our expectations.”
根據(jù)第四段中的“we are maintaining our attention to ensure rats cannot return to the island.”

Today, we are told , children don’t spend enough time in the fresh air. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV—they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature.
But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some “wild time”. They want kids to swap at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building dens, climbing trees, rummaging for conkers and playing hide and seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park.
Children often need a helping hand from mom and dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from National Health Service says, “We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids’ development, independence and creativity., by giving wild time a go”.
So despite the complicated world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing “nature’s playground” is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, “We need to make more space for wild time in children’s daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted”.
This might sound a bit old fashioned to you or maybe, like me, it’s made you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and relieving your childhood. There’s no age limit on enjoying yourself!

Unless you’re one of the lucky few who already know what their passion is and what they really enjoy, you will be spending a lot of time trying new things and figuring out what you’re good at and what you like. Don’t be afraid to try new things and fail in them; failing builds character. You have a lot of growing up to do in your 20s, a lot of self-examination and exploration. Use this time wisely to get to understand yourself as best as you can — not that you won’t change as you continue to get older, but it’s definitely a time of discovery, getting to know yourself and what you want in this world and what you have to contribute in the world.
Life is about change; don’t go against it and just go with it. Learn from your mistakes and grow. Let go of things you can’t change. Sometimes change will be so painful that you will want to tear your heart out, but you’ll be okay if you just hang on and know that no matter what happens, you will be alright. Win, lose or draw, life will go on and you’ll get another chance to start your life over if things haven’t gone according to your plan.
Nothing lasts forever. Enjoy every moment that you have. Enjoy life and practice being present at the moment because time goes by extremely fast. There will be both good and bad times. The bad thing about ups is that there are always downs. It’s important to really enjoy the good moments in life because you’ll need those memories to reflect back on when the bad times come. The first 10 years after high school go by at a really high speed and before you know it you’re 28 and wondering how the time has escaped you.
Choosing a life partner is hard. Relationships in general are hard, not just romantic ones but friendships, and family relations as well. Stay in touch with people who you really care about and who really care about you. Make an effort to stay an active person in their life if you really care. You will not have as many close friends as you get older and you will probably lose some friends as well. Remember that it is okay because not everyone who comes into your life is meant to stay forever; let them go and try their best to love the people who are still in your life.
Happiness, love and confidence come from within. Life is what you make of it and what you put into it. You can create whatever life you want, and if you create that life and it doesn’t work for you any more, guess what? You can create a whole new life that does work. You may not have a choice in things that happen to you but you have a choice in how you react to them. Try to stay positive no matter what life throws at you and get through the tough times by talking to friends, family and an adviser if you need to.
