20.From snow-clogged mountain roads to desert highways, freeways to crowded city streets,Californians face a variety of tough driving conditions. But thanks to savvy driving, they consume proportionately less gasoline the rest of the nation. Here, some tips from the Golden State that will help drivers all over the country to get up to 25% more miles per gallon!By SUSAN NESTOR
FREEWAY FRENZY
●Try to maintain a steady speed-especially on freeways and expressways.Never exceed a steady 55 mph.Varying speed by as little as 5mph can reduce mileage by 1.5 miles per gallon.Avoid constant lane changes to"get ahead."
●Buy radial tyres. If you do a lot of expressway driving, they can increase mileage by as much as 10%.Your fuel savings will pay for the higher tyre price.

ON CITY STREETS
●Plan your route.City driving consumes about 50% more fuel than highway driving (100% more in crowed traffic).Always choose a route with synchronized traffic signals to get the best run for your money.
●Avoid unnecessary braking. Anticipate(預(yù)期)traffic light changes; it takes a lot of extra gas to get the car up to speed again.
COLD
●In winter, keep the car in a garage. It will start up easier, and start-up time is when you use the most gasoline. No garage?Cover the engine compartment with an old blanket or rug to shield it from cold winds; remove before starting up.
●Remove all ice and snow. Driving in snow consumes more gas anyway; no sense hauling around extra weight.

66.Highway driving can use aboutDfuel than city driving.

B.Drivers should avoid necessary breaking and constant lane changes.
C.A steady 65 mph is the ideal speed to save gasoline.
D.Radial tyres can help increase mileage in expressway driving.

4.I have been watching my daughters play sports since they were four,and have been shocked at how some parents in the crowd behave.
At soccer games,when my girls were very young,parents would be screaming at their children to get their heads into the game,to charge,to"get"an opposing player,or to"kill it."I understand parents want to encourage their children and their team-but at some point it becomes too much.
My daughter Grace is a high school and AAU (Association of American Universities) basketball player and a very good one at that.During a recent game,a parent sitting near me was shouting loudly to her daughter,standing up,expressing displeasure about the way her team was playing and,during halftime,speaking loudly about her personal life.After having her in my ear for more than half of the game,I was so put off that I had to move.
Admittedly,I am the quiet parent at games.I clap for the schoolgirls when they make wonderful plays.For the most part,however,I remain silent.Shouting out makes them nervous.
I asked Grace to weigh in on this,and she tells me:"Some parents become extremely emotionally invested in sports games,which can become a problem for the players.The worst thing is when people point out that‘crazy parent,'and they don't know that's your parent."
I am all for parent spectators cheering on their children and the rest of the team.But I hope you can cheer your children on in a positive way.Shouting things like,"Where's your head?""Go after her!"is not,in my view,the way to cheer on high school students or younger children.
If you have nothing positive to say,hold your tongue.If you find yourself struggling to keep it together,get some fresh air during halftime.

A.helpless    B.impatient    C.scared    D.a(chǎn)shamed
23.The author is against parent spectatorsB.
A.keeping silent all the time B.saying unpleasant words
C.cheering on the players     D.leaving during halftime
24.Who are the intended readers of the text?A
A.Parents.  B.Teenage players.  C.Soccer spectators.  D.Coaches.

12.Whether it is"women and children first"or"every man for himself"in a shipwreck may depend on how long it takes the ship to sink,researchers said recently.
When the Lusitania was torpedoed (用魚雷襲擊) by a German ship in 1915,it sank in 18 minutes and the majority of the survivors were young men and women who responded immediately to their powerful survival instincts.
But when the Titanic struck an iceberg in 1912,it took three hours to go down,allowing time for more civilized behavior to take control--and the majority of the survivors were women,children and people with young children.
Economist Benno Torgler of the Queensland University of Technology in Australia and his colleagues studied the two sinkings in order to explore the economic theory that people generally behave in a"rational"and selfish manner.The two tragedies provided a"natural experiment"for testing the idea,because the passengers on the two ships were quite similar in terms of gender and wealth.
The major difference was how long it took the ships to sink.They suggested that when people have little time to react,instincts may rule.When more time is available,social influences play a bigger role.But psychologists noted that many factors other than following social norms (社會規(guī)范)could come into play in a disaster,including an evolutionary urge to save the species,attachments that are formed between individuals during the event and the leadership of authority figures.
The extent of altruism(利他主義)and how it occurs"is a very controversial issue,"said Anthony R.Mawson,a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.He thinks the dominant response was attachment behavior.
Psychologist Daniel Kruger of the University of Michigan,US thinks that the answer lies less in social norms and more in our evolutionary heritage.Human beings have a deep instinct to preserve our kind,he said,and that means"people are more likely to save those who have higher reproductive value,namely the young and women in child-bearing years".
Kruger also stressed the importance of leadership during a disaster, noting that the Titanic's captain appeared to have greater control than the Lusitania's.
(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12WORDS)

78.According to Benno Torgler,what led to the different results between the two shipwrecks?
The time it took the ships to sink
79.Besides social norms and leadership,what other factors play a part in disaster behavior?
The evolutionary urge to save the species and the emotional/interpersonal attachments
80.According to Daniel Kruger,Why do the young and women of child-bearing age take the priority to survive?
Because they are more important to the survival of the species
81.What does the passage mainly tell us?
The reasons why people behave differently in a disaster.
