For his great achievements, he has been referred to as the “father of modern astronomy”, as the “father of modern physics”, and as “father of science”. The work of Galileo 37 (consider) to be a significant break from that of Aristotle. In addition, his conflict with the Roman Catholic Church is taken as 38 major early example of the conflict of authority and freedom of thought, particularly with science, 39 Western society. He was a man 40 experimented—never did he take anything for granted. Instead, he despised(蔑視) the prejudices and book learning of the Aristotelians and drew his 41 (conclude) fearlessly. He had been the first 42 (turn) a telescope to the sky, and he had seen there evidence enough to overthrow(推翻) Aristotle and Ptolemy together. Although Galileo found 43 difficult for him to make people 44 (convince) of his theories, he still stuck to his views. His observations showed the theory that the earth moves around the sun was right. It was only many years later 45 the world recognized his greatness.

John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching the high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.
Luckily he had a strong-willed caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son,you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.” She told him not to depend on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success,” she said. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”
These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15,to Chicago.
Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of words — as an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.
While others discouraged (使氣餒) him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by: “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” She also let him pawn(典當(dāng))her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind: “Son, failure is not in your vocabulary!”
Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America — worth $150 million.

3. John’s mother ________.

Learning Chinese has been like climbing a steep(陡峭的)mountain.
My mother was born in Tokyo, while my father moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong when he was seven years old. At home we speak English. I know some basic Chinese customs :to use chosticks gracefully (得體地)and what to say on Spring Festival to get a red envelope. But I never truly learned to speak Chinese.
Why should I need to learn the language ,anyway? I live in America where everyone speaks English.
I realized I was wrong in ninth grade when I arrived at Philips Academy,a famous boarding school in Massachusetts. The school encourages a global outlook(視野). There I decided to welcome the opportunity to learn Chinese. I met other American-born Chinese and together we spoke Ching-lish outside of the classroom.
I searched for ways to access Chinese culture through dramas such as Meteor Garden (《流星花園》)and music by singers such as S.H.E,Wilbur Pan and Jasmine Leung(梁靜茹). Listening to Chinese music is where I found my favorite singer in the whole world:Jay Chou. Even if I cannot understand what he is crooning(哼唱), I do feel more Chinese whenever I listen to his music.
Last summer I spent five weeks in China, four of which were taking a language course at a Beijing high school. I was proud when I could understand the dialogue in Intitial D(《頭文字D》) and when I could easily translate Fairy Tale sung by Kong Leung(光良).
Learning Chinese has been a rocky trek(艱苦跋涉), and I know it will continue to be that way before I arrive at a relative plateau(高地) of fluency(流利).I hope that one day I will be able to work and maybe even live in China as a true Chinese.
