Dear Tom,

I’m glad to hear that you are considering make up with Peter. If I am you, I would consider a bike as a birthday present for him.

As far as I know it, Peter is always in poor health so he can take more exercises by riding a bike to build up his body. In the meanwhile, you can often go outing by bike together, which is helpfully in rebuilding your friendship. Beside, taking a bike is an environmentally-friendly means of transport. Its convenient him to get around as well.

Apart from giving him the gift, you can also adopt other means, such as traveling, seeing a movie, having dinner and going shopping. No matter how you do, being sincere was the most important. I really hope that you can be good friends forever.

Best wishes!

【題目】GRANDMOTHER, Michelle Riotton, a 78 old, survived after falling down a mountain valley. She set off for a walk alone dressed only in a light jacket and trousers. "I slipped into a valley!" said Mrs. Riotton, who said the fall happened in a deep forest close to her home village.

It was warm and sunny when the accident happened, but temperatures dropped to very low when night fell, and it rained. "I wasn’t afraid," said Mrs Riotton. "But I was worried that my children and grandchildren would become too worried about me." Mrs Riotton said she covered herself in leaves when feeling cold, taking very small bites of two biscuits which she had in her pocket and drinking rainwater which fell down her face.

She spent six nights before she was found on Saturday. She was lying at the bottom of the valley, which was less than a mile from her home. The search had once been stopped, but Patrice Fossard, one of her neighbors, insisted that the search continue. "There was no way we could give up her, even if deep inside we felt we had little hope of finding her alive," said Mr Fossard. "It was a miracle that Michele was finally found."

Mrs Riotton said she would be taking life easier from now on. "Enough is enough!" she said. "No more forests--I don’t want to visit one again."

A mountain policeman said walking alone in the mountain was not recommended and that Mrs Riotton should have carried a mobile phone with her. "The mountains are particularly dangerous at this time of year as sunny afternoons can quickly change into cold, wet and stormy evenings," he said. "Anybody walking into the mountains should carry safety equipment and be prepared for any kind of emergency."

Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says.Beehives (蜂窩) — either recorded or real — may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops.

In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them.Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.

Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life.Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down.Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.

From a distance, Lucy switched on the prerecorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera.Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds.Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees.Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall (瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed.Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.

Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial (最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

C.has stopped elephants eating crops

D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms.

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.

【題目】Food safety is a problem in all places around the world and people in different areas of the world prepare foods in different ways. The WHO released five simple rules for preparing food in a safe way. 1

Key 1: Keep clean.

The first key tells about the importance of washing. People should wash their hands often—before touching food, while they are preparing food, and any time after they go to the toilet. People should wash all surfaces and equipment used for preparing food. 2

Key 2: 3

People should separate raw, or uncooked food from foods that are already cooked and foods that will not be cooked. People should store raw meat, chicken, and fish in containers, or in separate areas. Raw foods should not touch prepared foods.

Key 3: Cook completely.

People should cook eggs and meat, like birds, seafood, and animals, especially carefully. These foods may carry more micro-organisms than other foods. Food like soup must be boiled for at least a minute to make it be cooked completely. It is also important that people re-heat cooked food completely.

Key 4: Keep food at safe temperatures.

When people are finished with eating, they should keep the left food in a refrigerator below 5℃ and shouldn’t store it for too long. At room temperature, about 20℃, the amount of micro-organisms can increase very quickly. 4 They cannot grow as quickly in a very hot or very cold environment.

Key 5: Use safe water and raw materials.

5 Damaged or old food may develop harmful chemicals as it gets older.

A.Eat cooked food immediately, while it is still hot.

B.They call these rules the “Five Keys to Safer Food.”

C.Separate raw and cooked.

D.People should use safe water and choose fresh foods.

E.Keeping everything clean helps people to avoid micro-organisms.

F.People should also protect cooking areas and food from insects and animals.

G.But temperatures above 60℃ or below 5℃ control the growth of micro-organisms.
