【題目】Tristan da Cunha, a 38–square–mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1,510 miles southwest of its nearest, St. Helena, and I,950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral (上將) of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.

Coming in a close second–and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land–is Easter Island, which lies 1,260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, and 2,300 miles west of South America.

The mountainous 64–square–mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1,000 huge stone figures, called moai, for which the island is most famous.

On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today, 2,000 people live on the Chilean territory (智利領土). They share one street, a small airport, and a few hours of television per day.

【1】It can be learned from the text that the island of Tristan da Cunha ________.

A. was named after its discoverer

B. got its name from Holland settlers

C. was named by the British government

D. got its name from the Guinness Book of Records

【2】Which of the following is most famous for moai?

A. Tristan da Cuha. B. Pitcairn Island.

C. Easter Island. D. St. Helena.

【3】Which country does Easter Island belong to?

A. Britain. B. Holland. C. Portugal. D. Chile.

【答案】

【1】A

【2】C

【3】D

【題目】George Aldrich, whose official title is chemical specialist, works at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. He uses his nose to protect astronauts from unpleasant or harmful odors (氣味). His near four-decade career has involved smelling objects from technical handbooks to astronauts’ personal things.

It’s crucial that all items taken aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are odorless. Since astronauts are allowed to bring personal items aboard, all their objects must be smell-checked before leaving Earth. In a video provided by Science Channel, Aldrich relates one specific occasion when an astronaut wanted to build a ship in a bottle in space. Everything in the ship-building process had to be sniffed—right down to the glue.

Aldrich and his team are responsible for making sure that objects are not only odorless but also harmless to astronauts. When the ISS heats up, a process called off-gassing occurs, which means chemicals flow out from certain substances (物質). Objects that would be safe on Earth could give off unpleasant odors or become dangerous when exposed to high temperatures in the ISS’s unique environment.

Of course, humans aren’t the only testers or the first to be exposed to potentially dangerous objects. Before Aldrich sticks his nose into a substance, it has been examined by machines. Even though machines can detect unsafe substances, computers cannot tell exactly how things smell to humans. While something could be technically fine, it could be smelly to an astronaut.

Aldrich’s nose is not alone there. He is the head of a hard-sniffing team of smell testers. Together they smell each object and rate it on a scale (等級) of 1 to 4. According to NASA, 1 cannot be detected, and 4 is considered not bearable. After the scientists conclude their tests, the scores are averaged. If an item is rated more than 2.4 on the scale, it fails the test and is not allowed on the flight.

1Which can describe the smell check from Paragraph 2?

A. Quite dangerous. B. Extremely strict

C. Rather boring. D. Very complex.

2What is a threat to astronauts’ safety at the ISS?

A. Negative emotions. B. Odor-related disease.

C. The off-gassing process. D. Changes in temperature.

3What should be done before Aldrich and his team start their work?

A. Using machines to test objects.

B. Having a meeting to make the scale.

C. Using computers to examine their noses.

D. Listing potentially dangerous substances.

4What is the text mainly about?

A. An unusual smell tester.

B. Astronauts’ life at the ISS.

C. Strong odors in a spaceship.

D. The smell of personal items.

【題目】Sometimes very odd things show up in ordinary places. In the 1800s, a strange sight began to be reported by farmers. Then in the 1970s, this strange event began to happen more and more often. People traveled for miles to stand in the fields and take photos of something they couldn't easily explain. What were they looking at? It was the crop circles — large and complex designs set into the middle of ordinary farm field. No one could understand how these huge designs were made.

Crop circles are found most often in fields of wheat, corn, or rice. They are usually created overnight, although some are reported to have appeared during the day. They have been seen all around the world, in more than 70 different countries. Scientists have found that the plants inside a crop circle are drier than the ones outside it. The plant stems () are bent and not broken in most crop circles, and sometimes the soil in the design has more iron than the soil outside of the design. Unfortunately, these facts alone do not help scientists answer their questions about crop circles. These facts only make them more mysterious.

Some people believe crop circles are made by UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) landing in farm fields. Others think aliens are leaving us messages in the beautiful designs. Still others believe Earth energy under the ground makes plants bend over in designs. Some people say they actually made the crop circles with special equipment. Scientists have found some crop circles that are certainly made by people, but they are usually a little different from other crop circles. So who makes crop circles and why they make them can't be explained to this very day.

1It's generally thought that crop circles _____.

A. have very frightening designs

B. happen in the same places

C. are found in terrible places

D. are made during the night

2What happens to the paints inside the crop circles?

A. They are broken.

B. They die very soon.

C. They are bent.

D. They need little water.

3Which of the following have the scientists proved?

A. Earth energy is one reason for crop circles' appearance.

B. UFOs help create some crop circles.

C. There actually are crop circles made by aliens.

D. Some crop circles are man-made.

4What is the best title for the text?

A. The History of Crop Circles

B. Different Designs of Crop Circles

C. Crop Circles: The Unsolved Mystery

D. Crop Circles: The Great Influence on Farms
