At first the parents heard from him every week and were2 for his well-being but then a telegram came, saying,"We regret to inform you that your son has been3 for three weeks

Mrs. Creighton was overjoyed,9 tears running down her cheeks,"Oh,that's just wonderful, Frank!"
There was10 for a moment, and then Frank said,"Mother, I want to ask you something important to me. While I've been in the11 , I've made some real12friends. There is one fellow I would like to bring home to meet you and Dad. And I would like to know if it would be all right if he could stay with us. He has13 else to go."
His mother assured him it would be all right.
Then Frank said,"You see, he was14 in battle. His face is all disfigured. He lost his15 , and his right hand is missing. So you see,he feels16about how others will17 him."
Frank's mother stopped to think a minute. Then she said, "Sure Frank, you bring him home—for a18 ,that's it. About him staying with us permanently(永久地), well, we'11 have to think about that." Frank said, "Okay, Mother," and hung up.
A week went by without any19 from Frank, and then a telegram arrived,"We regret to inform you that your son has20 his life. We would like you to come and identify the body."
"Why had he done this?" When they walked into the room to identify the body of their son, they found a young man with a disfigured face, one leg missing, and his right hand gone.

Last Christmas while staying with my parents, I1across some old love letters that my parents wrote to
each other. these letters were all piled up in a basket, dirty and2with dust.3to read and sort them, I asked
them if I could take the letters back to my Illinois home. They agreed.
As I carefully opened each letter, all of them4with age, I discovered a new page5unknown to me in
this private chapter of my parents’ lives.
My father used to 6 in the army. So his letters were full of frontline(前線)7of the things about the war.
Each of my mother’s letters was marked with her 1944 dark red lipstick(口紅) kiss. I was 8to these letters
like a magnet(磁鐵).
Just six weeks after our Christmas visit, Daddy became very9and was hospitalized(住院). This time, he
was fighting a10kind of war. As I sat by his bedside, we discussed the11. He told me how much receiving
those lipstick-kissed letters had12to him when he had been so far from home.
It so happened that the next day would be February 14. From the13letters I chose the card my father had
sent mother in 1944 and brought it to my father’s bedside.
At his bedside, I joked with him, saying14.“Today is Valentine’s Day, don’t you want to sent Mother a
present?” He became more15when I handed him the old16. He carefully opened it and took out the card,
and when he17 it, his eyes were filled with tears.
My father, in a voice tight with18read the loving19he’d sent to my mother fifty-six years earlier. And
this time, he could read it to her20.

After six months of living in New Zealand, I realized one thing. Despite my1for greater contact with local students,2 I initiated(開始) the contact, it wouldn’t happen. Local students are not interested in contacts with the international students, because they regard us as shy, 3 and sometimes snobby (勢利的) people. Of course we know that’s not true. I want to change their opinions.
After4the problem, I put on my “confidence mask” each morning and walked around with a smile on my face. I chatted with people whenever I had the chance. I showed that I was not afraid to5 them, and that I was worthy of being a friend.
A side-effect of my6confidence was that my emotions occasionally broke down Only in the 7of my room, where no one could see, would I reveal my real emotions. All the rejections, funny looks, and8behind my back calling me a weirdo(古怪的人) melted  into tears. Once that was done, I would put on my confidence mask once again and start a new day.
It finally worked  My name became known throughout the school as I appeared to be 9and active. Slowly, I discovered that I no longer needed to put on my confidence mask. I had real   friends. Instead of dragging myself to school and10to be happy, I was truly happy. I could not believe it when I was elected to the student government as Deputy Head boy----the first international student to receive the title.
From my11in New Zealand, I believe one thing will always be true: If you try your best to reach your goals, you’ll achieve your12 dreams.

My best friend is Cocoa, and I live in a senior-citizen apartment. Cocoa is a ten-year-old dog and I am a sixty-nine-year-old lady, so you can see we both qualify as1citizens.
He is a2companion. He does many amusing things that make me3, and when that happens, he is so delighted4he just keeps it up.
But one afternoon, Cocoa started acting strangely. I was sitting on the floor playing with him,5he started pawing and smelling at the right side of my6. He had never done anything like this ever before, and I told him, “No.” To Cocoa, one “no” is usually7, but not that day. He stopped briefly, and then8ran toward me, throwing his entire weight at the right side of my chest. He crashed into me and I cried in9, falling down to the floor. Soon after this, I felt a lump (腫塊). I went to my doctors, and after X-rays10and lab work were done, they told me I had cancer.
When cancer starts, a11of calcium (鈣) builds. Then the lump or cancer attaches itself to this wall. When Cocoa jumped on me, the force of the impact broke the lump away from the wall. This made it possible for me to12the lump.
I had a complete mastectomy (乳房切除術) and the cancer has not13to any other part of my body. The doctors told me if the cancer had gone undetected even six more months, it would have been too14.
Was Cocoa15of just what he was doing? I’11 never really know. What I do know is that Cocoa not only shares his life with me, he has also made sure that I will be around to share my life with him!

When I first started to read “Pride and Prejudice”, I thought the novel was going to be the same old1“l(fā)ove story”. However, after reading the first few pages I began to be2that it wasn’t that sort of story, instead it had an interesting insight (洞察力) on marriage, family and social status. I3that the time frame was somewhere back in the late 1800’s. This assumption was just a fact that I took for granted because there was no date4in any part of the novel. From what I got in the class5, this story is supposed to be a timeless piece that can be framed with any time period. This was one thing I would have never picked up by myself.
The6in the story each have their own unique roles, and if you didn’t really take the time to read it7the first time, chances are you will8a lot of information about them. This was what happened to me when I read the story and came to class the next day. Not until then did I9that I had not read it as clear as I had thought. This is also where the discussion helped me catch up on the character roles. Reading again the parts that I thought were important also helped me gain a better10of the story.
