Nodira, 18, lives in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. She was born with a rare disease and is now paralyzed(癱瘓) from the waist down. Her life is confined to a wheelchair but her dreams know no such boundaries. Her hopes for the future include attending university, riding in her father’s car and being able to walk like other children.
Nodira, which means ‘unique’ in Uzbek, is one of five children in a poor family. Every morning, after reciting her prayers, Nodira feeds the hens and goats from her wheelchair. The rest of her day is spent knitting for other people and helping her mother with the household chores.
Nodira has never been to school because it is too far from her home and inaccessible for her wheelchair. A local teacher used to come and tutor her at home and, as a result, she was able to finish third grade. After that, her parents moved to another town and the tutor could not visit as much.
Despite the many difficulties in Nodira’s life she is lucky to be living with her family. The stigma(羞辱) attached to the children living with disabilities, combined with the lack of wheelchair access in schools and the economic difficulties faced by many Uzbek families, have led many parents to place children with disabilities in special institutions.
These days, Nodira does homework exercises at home and reads as much as she can. Still, it is unlikely that she will be able to finish her primary education, much less attend university. While missing out on an education is a great disappointment to Nodira, her greatest wish, for a true friend, can still come true. “What I want more than anything is a friend who also has a disability,” she says. “Somebody will not feel sorry for me or make fun of me, and will understand what my life is like.”

The art of giving gifts is to give something that others cannot buy for themselves.

I have spent most of my career as a traveling salesman. There’s 36   lonelier than having meals myself in a coffee shop. One year, my five-year-old daughter Jeanine gave me a  37 . It was a soft toy penguin with a hand –painted  38 saying “I love My Dad!”  Tears came into my eyes and immediately, I gave it a  39 place on my desk.
Soon I had to leave on another business  40 . This time when I was  41 , I put the penguin in my suitcase. After that day, Jeanine always helped me pack with the penguin. Many years 42 by and that little penguin has traveled with me hundreds of thousands of miles all across America and over to Europe. We have also made many friends  43  the way.
44 one afternoon after leaving my hotel, I discovered that the penguin was  45 . Frantically, I phoned the hotel. The clerk  46  , saying it hadn’t been reported. But half an hour later, he called back to say that my penguin had been found. It was late,  47  I drove several hours to get my little  48 , arriving near midnight.
When I rushed to the hotel, I found that it was waiting at the front desk. In the lobby(大廳), some   49 business travelers looked at us, I think, with some  50 and envy(羨慕). Someone came out to shake my hand. One man told me that he had even volunteered to  51 it to me the very next day.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

On April twenty-second, some American children stayed out of school but they were not punished. They were with their parents. As Faith Lapidus tells us, it was Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
The Ms. Foundation for Women started the program seventeen years ago, in 1993. At first it was just called Take Our Daughters to Work. Gloria Steinem and other foundation leaders pointed to studies showing that self-image suffers as girls become teenagers. They can lose trust in their abilities and intelligence, especially in areas like science, math and technology. So the Ms. Foundation planned a day for parents in New York City to show girls all the possibilities for them in the professional world. But there was so much interest, the organizers decided to make it national.
At first, girls mostly followed their mom or dad around at work to learn about their jobs. Later, employers and schools began to offer organized activities. But from the beginning there were protests(反對(duì)) from parents and others about the exception of boys. So in 2003 the day was renamed Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work.
2007 was the last year that the Ms. Foundation for Women headed the program. Now, the event is run by a twelve-person group called the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation.
The event is connected with Mattel, the company that makes Barbie dolls.
Carolyn McKecuen is president of the foundation. She says a total of about thirty-three million children and adults are involved in the program. About one-third of the adults work at large companies or nonprofit organizations. Another third are in small businesses. The rest work in education.
Carolyn McKecuen says the numbers from this year's event are not final yet. But early reports suggest that participation was up at least ten percent from last year. And she says the foundation is hoping to find support to expand the program internationally. She says there are lots of requests from other countries for information about how to set up similar programs.
小題1:It was called Take Our Daughters to Work at first because ______.
A.girls are considered to be clever than boys
B.girls are considered to be more foolish than boys
C.girls aren’t confident in some areas as they becomes older

小題2:Why was the day renamed as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day later?
A.Because some parents were against only girls’ having the chance.
B.Because some parents wouldn’t like to take their daughters to work.
C.Because some employers were against parents’ taking their children to work.
D.Because some schools didn’t want to give any students’ time to leave school.
小題3:How many years did the Ms. Foundation for Women head the program?
A.17B.18C.14D.10
小題4:From this passage we can learn ______.
A.April twenty-second is a day for some American children to stay out of school for punishment
B.the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is a national in America

D.Lots of other countries want to set up similar programs for parents and children
小題5:The last paragraph shows that ______.
A.the program becomes more and more welcome
B.the program will come an end without international support
C.the program has been copied by many other countries
D.Carolyn McKecuen wants more and more children to take part in the program

When 47-year-old volunteer Susan Boyle stepped onto the stage of Britain’s Got Talent and announced she was unemployed, had never been married and “never been kissed, actually”, few in the audience would have wondered why. This Ms Boyle, looking unfashionable, from a village in Scotland, shocked the three judges and the audience with the song I dreamed a dream from the musical Les Miserables on a show of Britain’s Got Talent, one of the hottest reality shows in Britain.
She couldn’t hide the awkwardness when walking to the center of the stage in a housedress, and everyone — including the judges — seemed laughing at her when she said she wanted to be as successful as Elaine Paige. As soon as she began singing, however, everyone in the auditorium fell silent, then rose within seconds to applaud her incredible voice as the celebrity judges sat open-mouthed, and remained standing to the end.
After her performance, one of the judges Piers Morgan said, “Without doubt that was the biggest surprise I’ve had in three years of this show. When you stood there everyone was laughing at you. No one is laughing now. That was amazing.” Actress Amanda Holden followed, “I’m so thrilled because I know that we everybody were against you. I honestly think that we were all being very cynical (憤世嫉俗的) and I think that’s the biggest wake up call ever.”
Susan obviously won over the hearts of millions around the world with sensation spreading across the Atlantic. Hollywood actors Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore — who between them have nearly 1.5 million followers — speak highly of her. Kutcher posted a link to the video clip (片段). The Scottish talent made her live American debut via satellite connection on CBS’s The Early Show, doing an interview and singing live from her room. And she already accepted an invitation from talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
Now Boyle has become one of the world’s hottest celebrities. The video clip of her performance has been viewed more than 50 million times on Youtube, becoming a hit on the Internet.
