The Town of Pressure and the Town of Pleasure were neighbors but had nothing in common. Residents built walls to      influence from the other town.
In Pressure,      struggled to be the very best. When women gave birth, they would      to have the baby with the loudest cry. There was violent competition in every aspect of life. Because     was the index (指數(shù)) of success, people were     busy making money, with     for relaxation. Some young people couldn’t bear the intensity and resorted to drink or drugs to escape.
, over in Pleasure, the motto was “As long as you like it, do it.” People grew up without      and     do anything they liked. Children played computer games day and night. At school, teachers didn’t _  whether students showed up or not. Workers might sit around the office      sipping coffee and doing nothing.      the lack of regulations, nobody worried about losing their jobs. It was      that mattered. No one had the      thought of moving forward, either for themselves or for the town. The computers they used were      models from Pressure.
Some of the young were addicted to      because of the meaninglessness of their lives. Then, people in the two towns began asking themselves, “What is     for?” But, just before life in the two towns completely     , there came a saint – Mr. Reason. He went from door to door, talking with people and giving advice. People in Pressure learnt to be      with what they had, while people in Pleasure began to make plans. They     the walls between them and built a road to connect the two. The towns’ people came to realize the truth—there is no space between Pressure and Pleasure if they don’t go to extremes.

In 1970, my five brothers, my sister and I lived in the housing projects of Toronto with our parents. My father was a factory worker, and my mother stayed at home. Each year my father would dress up as Santa Claus and go through the streets of the projects sharing joy and candies with the children there. He loved it as much as they did!
But around the Christmas in 1970, my father was out of his job and money was tight. In fact, there was no money for Christmas and my parents weren’t sure what they’d provide for us.
That Christmas Eve, however, as usual, my father left the house dressed as Santa Claus. He knew that even though our Christmas would be hard, he could not disappoint the other kids in the neighborhood.
As my father left the house and went down the walkway, Santa Claus was walking up, with a great sack full of gifts for us! He said nothing, only smiled a sweet smile at my father, and wished him a Merry Christmas. The happy man handed Dad the sack and walked away down the block.
We never knew who the man was and who showed us great kindness on a snowy Christmas night. We do know, however, that without him we would have had nothing under the tree. His kindness gave my parents hope and showed us in a very real way the true meaning of Christmas.
Our family has never forgotten this kind stranger. Each year we tell the story of the mysterious Santa Claus and try to repay his gifts by giving gifts to others in need.

I will never forget that night, when I pulled into my drivewayafter a busy day of school and baby-sitting. I still      to write a physics paper, which must be handed in the next day. There were many things on my mind. At that time I was having many problems with my family and friends,      I was in a very bad mood (心情). For two years I had been smoking marijuana (大麻) and got used to it,     could not stop. I did not let drugs affect my grades or personality, but it made a (n)      in how I thought about myself. I had always been a good kid and still tried to be, but drugs brought me     . I frequently thought about     drugs were not something I wanted as part of my life. I wanted to   but I was frightened to make it.
I looked up at the sky as I got out of my     . The moon gave off tiny beams of light. The sky was a dark, ink-black colour      millions of stars. I stood outside in the cool fall air for what seemed a long time of heaven and     . The joy that I had not      for ages came upon me. I closed my eyes to decide if this dream could be     . I slowly opened my eyes and caught a shooting star (流星) flying over treetops. Tears fell from my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. I had     the true beauty of nature. Those few      helped me find the    to change.
It is not easy to make the decision to stop using drugs. It is even harder to stop     . Giving it up has given me hope and a reason to be      myself. It has helped me grow      and more mature (成熟).
