Tips for Cycle Trips

Cycling has many advantages as a form of travel, as it is the fastest way to travel by human Power, and slow enough to allow the type of local involvement that is impossible with powered travel.Cycle travel is a cheap form of transportation.

Distance

On level terrain(地形),without a headwind, a cyclist of average fitness on a touring bike can comfortably cover 60-120km a day.Distances of up to 250km a day are possible, but anything much beyond 120km will require considerable physical tension and not allow many stops to enjoy the places you visit. For many,80-100km a day will be the most suitable distance to aim for, as it will give a sense of achievement and also leave plenty of time for meals and activities.

Geography

The gradient(坡度)of the trip will reduce your range.A basic rule is that for every 100 metres of altitude you climb, you should add an extra 15 minutes to your journey time.In hilly or mountainous areas, the easiest routes for cycling are downstream along major rivers, as overall they will be downhill.A long, roundabout route along a river will usually be easier than a short, direct route over a hill or mountain pass. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the most scenic routes often come from hilly terrain.

Eat

Food choice depends largely on where you are, so see the respective sections for more information about foods. As you will be working hard, it's important to get enough energy in your food. On long trips away from major towns-there may be little quality food available, so be prepared to live on candy bars, prepared meat products and the like if the need arises.

Sleep

While you can take a tent with you, many hotels and especially campsites can accommodate cyclists. However, there are also some hotels that may be less used to accommodating cyclists. If you are exploring an unfamiliar world, asking about the accommodation spares you the search for a new place to stay after a long exhausting day of travel.

【題目】Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized countries. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.1

The scientists say that human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this has led to new kinds of sicknesses.2They are called“diseases of civilization”.Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.

The scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none.3However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that today.

Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic (馴養(yǎng)的) ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. 4 We eat six times more salt than our ancestors and we eat more sugar as well. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein (蛋白質(zhì)) and much less vitamin C.

5But the scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fat, salty and sweet food.

A. Stone Age people lived a simple life without any meat.

B. But today, we enjoy eating a lot of these.

C. In that case, they would live a much healthier life.

D. Ancient people also got lots of physical exercise.

E. These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.

F. People today probably don't want to live like our ancestors.

G. Modern people used to suffer from“diseases of civilization”.

【題目】閱讀理解。

The saying “a penny for your thoughts” is an English idiom simply asking people to volunteer their opinions on an issue being discussed. In modern usage, it is often stated as an indirect way of asking what someone is thinking about.

This phrase is basically a proposal (提議), and the speaker is offering to pay to hear the listener's thoughts. It is an idiom, of course, and not meant literally (字面上地) so no real payment generally takes place.

When the saying originated, a penny was worth a lot more than it is in the 21st century. Therefore, “a penny for your thoughts” likely indicated the thoughts were more valuable to those asking the listener for them than they are by today's standards. This loss of value can be used ironically (諷刺地), however, through tone (語氣) of voice; it can be used to indicate that someone's idea is bad or worth a penny in modern value.

The phrase is generally credited to a man by the name of John Heywood, who was born sometime just before the 16th century. During his life, he was a writer who penned many plays and a book in 1546, later known as The Proverbs of John Heywood. It is likely that Heywood did not actually come up with the phrase “a penny for your thoughts”. Rather, he was simply the first person to have set the phrase down in written form. The actual origins of the term are unknown, and since his book was simply a collection of common idioms and expressions, it was probably familiar to people in the mid 1500s.

Another phrase similar to “a penny for your thoughts”is offering “your two cents” after making a statement. Someone might give his or her opinion and then say, “that's my two cents,” to indicate the value of his or her idea. While, much like a penny, “two cents” is relatively low in value now, it would have been more valuable at one time and the expression is used in much the same way.

【1】When someone says “a penny for your thoughts”, he or she________.

A.wants to ask you for advice

B.considers your thoughts unique

C.is curious about what's on your mind

D.will pay for what you're thinking about

【2】The modern meaning of “a penny for your thoughts” ________.

A.is more closely connected to the value of the penny

B.can differ greatly according to a speaker's tone of voice

C.can confuse the listener easily

D.is more popularly accepted

【3】In what way is Heywood related to the phrase “a penny for your thoughts”?

A.He came up with it while he was writing.

B.He helped to explain the origins of it.

C.He contributed to the wide use of it.

D.He was the first person to use it.

【4】What do we know about the phrase “your two cents”?

A.It is usually used at the end of a statement.

B.It comes from “a penny for your thoughts”.

C.It has witnessed some changes since the 16th century.

D.It is more familiar to people than “a penny for your thoughts”.
