Have your parents ever inspected your room to see if you cleaned it properly? Imagine having your entire houses, garage, and yard inspected at any time — with no warning. Inspections were a regular part of lighthouse (燈塔) living, and a keeper's reputation depended on results. A few times each year, an inspector arrived to look over the entire light station. The inspections were supposed to be a surprise, but keeper sometimes had advance notice.

Once lighthouses had telephones, keepers would call each other to warn that the inspector was approaching. After boats began flying special flags noting the inspector aboard, the keeper's family made it a game to see who could notice the boat first. As soon as someone spotted the boat, everyone would do last-minute tidying and change into fancy clothes. The keeper then scurried to put on his dress uniform and cap. Children of keepers remember inspectors wearing white gloves to run their fingers over door frames and windowsills looking for dust.

Despite the serious nature of inspections, they resulted in some funny moments. Betty Byrnes remembered when her mother did not have time to wash all the dishes before an inspection. At the time, people did not have dishwashers in their homes. In an effort to clean up quickly, Mrs. Byrnes tossed all the dishes into a big bread pan, covered them with a cloth and stuck them in the oven. If the inspector opened the oven door, it would look like bread was baking. He never did.

One day, Glenn Furst's mother put oil on the kitchen floor just before the inspector entered their house. Like floor wax, the oil made the floors shiny and helped protect the wood. This time, though, she used a little too much oil. When the inspector extended his hand to greet Glenn's mother, he slipped on the freshly oiled surface. "He came across that floor waving his arms like a young bird attempting its first flight," Glenn late wrote. After he steadied himself, he shook Glenn's mother's hand, and the inspection continued as though nothing had happened.

由第一段中的“Inspections were a regular part of lighthouse(燈塔) living, and a keeper’s reputation depended on the results” 可知,燈塔看守人的名譽(yù)取決于巡視員的檢查結(jié)果,結(jié)合選項(xiàng),C選項(xiàng)“檢查結(jié)果對(duì)看守人的名聲很重要”正確。

由第二段中的“As soon as someone spotted the boat, everyone would do last-minute tidying and change into fancy clothes”可知,一旦有人發(fā)現(xiàn)了巡視員的船只,大家馬上就開始清理,換衣服,準(zhǔn)備起來。

由第三段中的“In an effort to clean up quickly, Mrs. Byrnes tossed all the dishes into a big bread pan, covered them with a cloth, and stuck them in the oven”可知為了快速地清理房間,Byrnes太太將盤子放到烤爐中,這樣房間會(huì)看起來很整潔。

由最后一段中的“When the inspector extended his hand to greet Glenn's mother, he slipped on the freshly oiled surface … He came across that floor waving his arms like a young bird attempting its first flight," Glenn late wrote. After he steadied himself, he shook Glenn's mother's hand”可知,巡視員在剛打了油的地板上滑了一下子,他揮舞著胳膊,就像一只企圖初次飛行的鳥一樣。在他穩(wěn)定了自己之后,他握住了Glenn母親的手。很明顯,巡視員揮舞胳膊是為了讓自己的身體穩(wěn)定下來,保持平衡。故A選項(xiàng)正確。

Saunders has become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.
Next October, Saunders, 27, heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, a 2900-kilometre journey that has never been completed op skis.

(D)
The health-care economy is filled with unusual and even unique economic relationships. One of the least understood involves the peculiar roles of producer or “provider” and purchaser or “consumer” in the typical doctor-patient relationship. In most sectors of the economy, it is the seller who attempts to attract a potential buyer with various appealing factors of price, quality, and use, and it is the buyer who makes the decision. Such condition, however, is not common in most of the health-care industry.
In the health-care industry, the doctor-patient relationship is the mirror image of the ordinary relationship between producer and consumer. Once an individual has chosen to see a physician — and even then there may be no real choice — it is the physician who usually makes all significant purchasing decisions: whether the patient should return “next Wednesday”, whether X-rays are needed, whether drugs should be prescribed, etc. It is rare that a patient will challenge such professional decisions or raise in advance questions about price, especially when the disease is regarded as serious.
This is particularly significant in relation to hospital care. The physician must certify the need for hospitalization, determine what procedures will be performed, and announce when the patient may be discharged. The patient may be consulted about some of the decisions, but in general it is the doctor's judgments that are final. Little wonder then that in the eye of the hospital it is the physician who is the real “consumer”. As a consequence, the medical staff represents the “power center” in hospital policy and decision-making, not the administration.
Although usually there are in this situation four identifiable participants— the physician, the hospital, the patient, and the payer (generally an insurance carrier or government) — the physician makes the essential decisions for all of them. The hospital becomes an extension of the physician; the payer generally meets most of the bills generated by the physician/hospital, and for the most part the patient plays a passive role. We estimate that about 75-80 percent of health-care choices are determined by physicians, not patients. For this reason, the economy directed at patients or the general is relatively ineffective.
(1)The author's primary purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
A.urge hospitals to reclaim their decision-making authority
B.inform potential patients of their health-care rights
C.criticize doctors for exercising too much control over patients
D.analyze some important economic factors in health-care
(2)It can be inferred that doctors are able to determine hospital policies because ________.
A.most of patient's bills are paid by his health insurance
B.it is doctors who generate income for the hospital
C.some patients might refuse to take their physician's advice
D.a doctor is ultimately responsible for a patient's health
(3)According to the author, when a doctor tells a patient to “return next Wednesday”, the doctor is in fact ________.
A.advising the patient to seek a second opinion
B.warning the patient that a hospital stay might be necessary
C.instructing the patient to buy more medical services
D.admitting that the first visit was ineffective
(4)The author is most probably leading up to ________.
A.a proposal to control medical costs
B.a study of lawsuits against doctors for malpractice
C.an analysis of the cause of inflation (通貨膨脹) in the US
D.a discussion of a new medical treatment

Dear Miss Wang,
Knowing that our library is going to buy books, I'd like to give some advices.
Popular science books is what we need most. Usually popular science books explain basic principles of nature in a simple and interesting way. They helped us understand science better and arouse our curiosity scientific discoveries.
In addition to read for knowledge, we read for fun and inspiration. That is why I recommend other category of books: literary books. Classic works, written by masters, present great thoughts through fascinated stories and language. They not only offer us a joy and excitement, but also encourage us to think critical.
I'll be glad whether you can consider my recommendation.
