My grandparents built and lived in a small 600-square-foot cottage for most of their adult lives. They actively practiced living a   21  life. Saving and avoiding overspending was their life   22  for their whole life.   23  seeking satisfaction through material items, they chose to spend   24  time together, with family, and in nature.
Over the years my grandparents noticed   25  changes in their community. Every year more farmland was   26  to build larger and larger homes. With houses’ prices   27 , many of their neighbors sold their little homes and lands.   28  only their small house was still on the block, surrounded by a sea of tall buildings. Countless family members   29  my grandparents to expand their home. But they didn’t want a bigger place and were   30  with what they had.
In many ways, I’ve modeled my life after my grandparents. Through their example I learned an important   31  : It is absolutely possible to live a small and fulfilling life.
My grandparents lived in a small home, but they owned a(n)   32  garden. They loved gardening deeply because it not only   33  their grocery bill, but also improved their health and gave them a(n)   34  to be outside. They said, “  35   you live in a small home or an apartment, you don’t have to give up gardening.”
My grandparents avoided lifestyle creep(攀比) by paying for their own home in cash and building it themselves. They also recycled and   36  everything. For instance, they drove the same car for over 15 years and didn’t buy anything new until their stuff was   37  worn out.
My grandparents taught me that living well on   38  isn’t about feeling bad for myself.   39 , it’s about giving yourself the time, freedom, and money to seek your dreams. You know: Becoming debt free, living in a smaller home, and others are a few ways to   40  your life.

小題3:A  Rather than而不是;More than不僅僅;Other than除了;Apart from除了。 我們將句子改成“They chose to spend   24  time together, with family, and in nature  23  seeking satisfaction through material items”就比較容易選出答案。
quality time珍貴時光;shopping購物;work工作;break休息。
小題5:A 根據(jù)下文的描述“Every year more farmland was   26  to build larger and larger homes.
小題6:B根據(jù)下文的“to build larger and larger homes”推斷應(yīng)該是“毀掉農(nóng)田來建造房子”。
小題7:C根據(jù)下文“many of their neighbors sold their little homes and lands.” go up上升;take up拿起,繼續(xù),接受(提議),占去。make up組成,補足,彌補,編造;turn up出現(xiàn),調(diào)大(聲音)。
小題8:D 由于“很多鄰居都賣掉了自己的小房子和土地”,所以最終的結(jié)果是“only their small house was still on the block, surrounded by a sea of tall buildings.(街區(qū)就只剩下祖父母家的小房子,而周圍全是高樓大廈)”Eventually終于,最后;Probably也許;Suddenly突然;Instantly立刻。
10:A be content with="be" satisfied/pleased with對感到滿意;angry生氣;cautious小心的,謹慎的;familiar熟悉的。
小題12:D與上文“My grandparents lived in a small home”中的“small”形成對比,故用“huge巨大的”。
As if 似乎,好像;Even if即使;Only if只是;What if要是……
18:B living well on less=" living" a simple life。 feel bad for心疼。
What’s more況且;As a result結(jié)果;On the whole總的說來。   D.

The saint continued, “When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak loudly, only whisper and they get    24   closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only    25   each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.”
The saint said finally, “When you argue, do not let your hearts get    26  , and do not say words that distance each other more, or there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not   27   the path to return!”

Looking back on my childhood. I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon  abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.
Before Word War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large  family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle. Because it all seems to fit together .This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books. Which some may light honor, with the title of scientific research.
But curiosity a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist? One of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made a naturalist. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.
小題1:According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be _____

C.full of enthusiasmD.knowledgeable
小題2:The first paragraph tells us that the author _____

A.just rends about other peoples observations and discoveries.
B.Lacks some of the qualities required of scientist.
C.Has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic.
D.Come up with solutions in most natural ways.
小題4:The author can’t remember him relatives clearly because__
A.He didn’t live very long with them
B.He was too young when he lived with them.
C.The family was extremely large
D.He was fully occupied with observing nature.
小題5:Which of the following statements is true?
A.The author believes that a born naturalist can not be scientist.
B.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and oil industry
C.The author’s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.
D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.

It was blazing hot, just like most July days. I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a
chocolate ice-cream. It was an old woman bent over a table near the door. Her back was so badly twisted that her face nearly touched the tabletop. I sat down facing her a couple of tables away.
“Poor woman,” I thought, “What does she get out of life? Why God let people live so long past their prime?”
As I thought, another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her. Soon the two of them were talking about childhood days. They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70 years... In minutes, the two of them were trembling with laughter.
I looked again at the first woman, then in the mirror on a nearby wall, catching a picture of myself. I was wearing a dirty shirt. She was well dressed in white, her hands sparking with gold rings. I was sad. She was laughing, smiling. I was putting the pieces of my life together. She had millions of wonderful memories to recall. I sat alone. She was sharing the day with a good friend. I was secretly worried about getting old. She was old, but it wasn’t hurting her.
As I left the shop, I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime. Why, that woman was more alive, more sensitive to life than I was. Age has not bent her spirit.

This Mother’s Day will be the 8th year I have spent without my own mother. She passed away less than a month before Mother’s Day in the year 2000. She had been ill for almost two years, and I didn’t cry when she died, or at her funeral, but on that first Mother’s Day without her. On that day, I realized that this person I loved and depended on was gone forever.
She still lives in family memories, in the thoughts of her friends and co-workers, in the values she had instilled(灌輸) in her children, and in the lovely flower gardens that she had so carefully tended.
She loved her gladioli and irises. Each fall she would dig the bulbs out of the soil and carefully wrap them in paper. The bulbs would be stored until the following spring when they would be replanted. It seemed like a lot of effort to me, but each year her flower garden was more glorious than the year before. She put the same hard work into caring for her family, instilling in her children a sense of justice and fair play, compassion, and strong moral values so that we blossomed.
Share anecdotes about your mother’s life at your Mother’s Day party. Too often, we avoid speaking of those loved ones who have passed away, fearful that we will unearth sad feelings. It doesn’t have to be that way. Sharing fond memories and stories of the life we shared with her can be a healing process that binds(捆綁)the family together.
My mother passed away when her oldest grandchild was only eight years old. Children will enjoy sharing pictures and stories of the grandmother they may have never known or have little memory of. Sharing anecdotes to pass on to the next generation will give children a feeling of family history and continuity, and may be one of the best ways to honor our mothers and grandmothers who have gone before us.

A.they are simply afraid of causing sad feelings

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, and in particular their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In families, it is quite often brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice.
It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a circle of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members. However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
