Your membership dollars help to improve the Garden, and provide educational and entertaining activities for the general public.

It is famous for a 44-room Tudor Revival granite mansion(公館)designed John Russel Pope. Purchased by the State in 1966 and officially named as the New Jersey Botanical Garden in 1984,可知植物園從前是一個(gè)公館,政府于1966年購得,然后取名為新澤西州植物園,故推測(cè)該植物園以前是私人的。B. used to be privately-owned(從前是私人擁有的)符合以上推測(cè),故選B項(xiàng)。

【題目】Imagine yourself on a boat looking out at the horizon and all you can see is the water meeting the sky with no land in sight and you are sailing straight ahead to meet the world. Jesse Martin does not have to imagine: he is living in it.

On Dec. 7, 1998, at 17 years old, Jesse set sail from Melbourne, Australia on his boat, attempting to become the youngest person to sail alone and nonstop around the world. He sailed south of New Zealand, through the South Pacific, around South America, north on the Atlantic, back south past Africa, through the Indian Ocean and back to Melbourne. Even as a young child, Jesse had been an adventurer who traveled all over Europe and Asia with his parents. Born in Munich, Germany in 1981, he moved to Australia with his family when he was only two years old. They moved close to a rainforest in Cow Bay, about 3,500kms north of Melbourne, where they built a small house with no electricity or running water. Jesse grew up at the beach enjoying the outdoors to its fullest. At 14, he sailed for the first time with his father and brother, Beau. It was after this trip that he began to dream about sailing around the world.

Jesse’s family played an important role. “I was made to believe I could do anything, although there were others that were not so encouraging or supportive” he says. “People that I looked up to, respected and trusted told me I couldn’t. Thankfully, I trusted myself. There were people that said that the boat couldn’t be ready by the time I had to leave.” However, through perseverance(堅(jiān)持不懈) and belief in himself, he was able to do what many told him was impossible.

On Oct.31, 1999, more than 10 months after he set sail, Jesse Martin went down in history as the youngest person to sail around the world alone, nonstop and unassisted.

1By encouraging readers to imagine a sailing experience, the author wants to __________.

A. show how difficult it is to be a sailor B. describe what Jesse’s sailing is like

C. show how wonderful Jesse’s life is D. describe what a sailor’s life is like

2What can you know from paragraph 2?

B. Jesse traveled all over Europe and Asia with his parents when he was 17.

C. Jesse was born in Melbourne and grew up at the beach.

D. Jesse grew up in a small house with no electricity or running water.

3What made Jesse decide to sail alone around the world according to the passage?

A. His childhood adventure experiences. B. His journeys to Europe.

C. His love for outdoor activities. D. His first sailing trip with his family.

4What can we learn from Jesse Martin’s story?

A. Life is an unusual adventure we should enjoy. B. Failure is the mother of success.

C. A strong belief will make a person stronger. D. Great interest contributes to success.

【題目】 I saw the most beautiful thing ever one morning. It was early with a slight frost on the ground, and I was walking on grass down to the farm—my mind on the daily routines.

Suddenly a shining flash erupted straight from the ground about 15 feet in front of me, and shot up into the sky. It was so brilliant, clear and clean. I thought the only thing that could make such a flash must be a diamond—maybe someone had lost some kind of jewelry. Or some kind of lightning strikes—so bright. I waited to see if it repeated but it didn’t.

I walked slowly towards it. There was nothing to see. I stared down at the grass, searching for gold or some kind of metal. Nothing. So I dropped down really close and there it was! A tiny spider’s web, delicately hanging between grass, flashing in a number of colors. The rising sun had caught the exact angle of the dewdrops (露珠), and that light had exploded up into the sky.

It was unbelievable, such a powerful flash from something so small and fragile, and I would have destroyed it beneath my feet. It was as if the unseen world was giving me a heads-up. Hello! Look what’s around you. I’ve never forgotten that moment.

So take some time to notice the wonder of nature that most of us never even see. So much beauty all around us if we would only take the time. Look at the tiny flowers that cover playing fields—we walk all over them without a second glance. The colors of practically any flower on the earth are breathtaking and all natural—if we would only notice. Take the time and discover from nature one secret beautiful thing that you can keep in your heart. Take a picture. It’s what life really consists of. And it’s free.

1What actually caused the flash?

A.A diamond.B.The lightning.

C.A piece of metal.D.A spider’s web.

2Why did the writer feel the discovery unforgettable?

A.The flash is very splendid.B.The spider’s web is mysterious.

C.The shining object was priceless.D.Something small touches her soul.

3What does the writer try to convey in the last paragraph?

A.Appreciate the beauty of nature.B.Be considerate towards the weak.

C.Find time to play outdoors.D.Keep a secret deep in heart.
