【題目】Variety is the spice of language. The words listed in this book are not intended to replace those that most people use most of the time. Rather, they are variations on the theme. We tend to use the same old words over and over again, to limit our powers of expression by limiting our vocabulary. 1 but why not enhance your speech and writing by learning to use new ones from time to time ds alternatives?

How often have you spoken of having an accident? 2 Or why not occasionally describe a situation as aggravated(惡化)instead of worsened.

I don’t mean that you should throw away the Mold words”. 3 English is an especially rich language, and often there are differences between two words that are generally regarded as die same. Thus, a mishap is not merely an accident; it is an unfortunate accident. Because there can be fortunate accidents, like bumping into an old friend you haven’t seen for years and whose address you’ve lost. 4.

No doubt a good many words in the list will be familiar to you, but do you use them, or do they remain the “property” of others? 5 Try to make these words your own, as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have owned in the past. Let them compete, and make your language all the richer.

A. Just vary them with the “new words”.

B. Many words have more than one meaning.

C. There is nothing wrong with the “old words”.

D. English words are grouped according to their origins.

E. Why not use the alternative mishap once in a while?

F. They are included to introduce variety into your speech and writing.

G. So in using mishap instead of accident, you must be sure of the difference.

【解析】試題這是一篇說明文。主要闡述多樣化是語言的調(diào)味品。我們經(jīng)常重復(fù)使用同樣的舊詞,限制了我們的表達(dá),我們應(yīng)該多學(xué)習(xí)一些新詞,替代我們的舊詞,讓我們的演講和寫作更豐富。

1考查上下文理解和推理判斷。由上文“We tend to use the same old words over and over again, to limit our powers of expression by limiting our vocabulary.”“我們往往一遍又一遍地使用同一個(gè)老詞,限制了我們的詞匯量,同時(shí)限制了我們的表達(dá)能力!苯Y(jié)合下文“but why not enhance your speech and writing by learning to use new ones from time to time ds alternatives?”可推斷,老詞沒什么錯(cuò)誤,但是為什么不通過學(xué)習(xí)使用新的方式來提高你的演講和寫作呢?因此C項(xiàng)符合語境。故選C。

2考查上下文理解和推理判斷。由下文“Or why not occasionally describe a situation as aggravated(惡化)instead of worsened.”可知,此處闡述用另外的表達(dá)說上文提到的“having an accident”,因此推斷E項(xiàng)為什么不偶爾使用為什么不偶爾使用替代性的“mishap”呢?符合語境。故選E。

3考查上下文理解和推理判斷。由上文“I don’t mean that you should throw away the Mold words.”可知,作者并不是說應(yīng)該擯棄那些舊詞,因此推斷A項(xiàng)“只是用新詞改變它們”符合語境。故選A。

由下文“Try to make these words your own, as companions or friendly rivals of the ones you have owned in the past. Let them compete, and make your language all the richer.”可知,努力讓這些詞匯成為你的,成為你過去擁有的那些詞的替代,讓那些詞完美,讓你的語言更豐富,因此推斷F項(xiàng)“會(huì)使用它們會(huì)讓你的演講和寫作更多樣化”符合語境。故選F。

【題目】 If you wear glasses, chances are you are smarter. Research published in the famous British journal Nature Communications has found that people who displayed higher levels of intelligence were almost 30 percent more likely to wear glasses.

The scientists studied the genes of thousands of people between the ages of 16 and 102.The study showed intelligence can be connected to physical characteristics. One characteristic was eyesight. In out of 10 people who were more intelligent, there was a higher chance they needed glasses. Scientists also said being smarter has better benefits. It is connected to better health.

It is important to remember these are connections which are not proven causes. Scientists call this correlation. Just because something is connected to something else does not mean one of those things caused the other. And it's worth noting that what constitutes intelligence is subjective and can be difficult, if not impossible, to measure.

Forget genes though. Plenty of proof shows wearing glasses makes people think you are more intelligent, even if you do not need glasses. A number of studies have found people who wear glasses are seen as smarter, hard working and honest. Many lawyers use this idea to help win their cases. Lawyer Harvey Slovis explained this. Glasses soften their appearance, he said. Sometimes there has been a huge amount of proof showing that people he was defending broke the law. He had them wear glasses and they weren't found guilty.

Glasses are also used to show someone is intelligent in movies and on TV. Ideas about people who wear glasses have begun to shift. People who do not need glasses sometimes wear them for fashion only. They want to look worldly or cool. But not everyone is impressed by this idea, though. GQ magazine said people who wear glasses for fashion are trying too hard to look smart and hip(時(shí)髦的). However, that hasn’t stopped many celebrities from happily wearing glasses even if they do not need them. Justin Bieber is just one high-profile fan of fashion glasses.

1What does the new study show?

A. People wearing glasses are smarter.

B. People wearing glasses are healthier.

C. Wearing glasses can make people cleverer.

D. Wearing glasses is associated with higher IQ.

2What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. ShiftB. Link

C. ProofD. Consequence

3Why do some lawyers ask Their clients to wear glasses in court?

A. Because it can create a moral image.

B. Because it can mislead the witnesses.

C. Because it can highlight clients’ qualities.

D. Because it can prove the clients' innocence.

【題目】The minute Joe Serna walked into the Veterans Treatment Court, he could feel his shoulders tense up. He had come to turn himself in (自首).

Six months earlier, Serna had been arrested for driving after drinking and was required to report to Judge Lou Olivera’s court every two weeks to take a test and prove he hadn’t been drinking. Serna had passed every biweekly screening—until the week before. Positive. He decided to try to bluff his way out of trouble. “I never had a drink, Judge,” he told the court.

^Both Joe Serna and Judge Olivera were old soldiers, and Olivera had come to know and admire Serna as he participated in the court’s program to help old soldiers with drinking and addiction problems. And that was what had brought Serna back to Olivera’s court a week after his lie. “This guy is a fellow soldier,” he told himself. “I need to make this right.” So Serna stood before Olivera and admitted, “I lied, Judge. I was drinking.”

After countless combats and the memories of many “best buddies” losing their lives, 39-year-old Joe Serna left the army in 2013 with 18 years of service. But in truth, the terrible memories had never left him and would reappear in nightmares. And that’s the reason for his drinking. To this day, being stuck in a closed space can cause flashbacks (突然重現(xiàn)) for Serna.

On the day when Serna admitted he had lied about drinking, the judge was moved and decided on the punishment: one night in jail.

The next night, Joe Serna was in a small cell and felt he would soon be flashing back to a terrible war. Then the door opened, and Judge Olivera came in. Serna was confused. But a few minutes later, he understood the judge had decided to spend the night with him. The two talked for hours about their service, their families, and their hopes for the future. At around one in the morning, Serna fell asleep. “He will be OK now,” the judge said to himself as he rolled up his shirt into a makeshift pillow.

1Which can best replace the underlined words in the second paragraph?

A. explain without being disturbed B. get away with his wrong-doing

C. give the court a little trouble D. give up drinking in future

2What made Serna decide to turn himself in?

A. His sickness in his shoulders. B. His admiration for Olivera.

C. Olivera’ s help and identity. D. The advice of Serna’s family.

3What can we know about Joe Sema?

A. He didn’t admit his fault and thus got punished.

B. He lost his life direction and got himself drunk often.

C. He had planned to talk more with Olivera in the cell.

D. He joined the army when he was 21 years old.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A. An Army of Two B. A Considerate Judge

C. Two Soldiers’ War Experience D. Honesty Is the Best Policy
