Watching some children trying to catch butterflies one hot August afternoon, I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood. When I was a boy of 12 in South Carolina, something happened to me that cured me forever of wanting to put any wild creature in a cage.
We lived on the edge of a wood, and every evening at dusk the mockingbirds would come and rest in the tree and sing. There isn’t a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.
I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and that way have my own private musician.
I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, in its fright at being captured, the bird fluttered about the cage, but eventually it settled down in its new home, I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my tiny musician.
I had left the cage out on our back porch(門廊), and on the second day of the bird’s captivity my new pet’s mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth . The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.
The following morning when I went to see how my captive was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was shocked! What had happened? I had taken excellent care of my little bird, or so I thought.
Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, happened to be visiting my father at the time and, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had occurred: “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison berries. She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity.”
Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

2.The mockingbird died because__________.
A. it ate some poisonous food the boy gave it by mistake
B. it ate the poisonous food its mother gave it
C. it was frightened to death
D. it refused to eat anything
3.The word “ornithologist” in the last but one paragraph probably means________.
A. a religious person
B. a kind and sympathetic person
C. a schoolmaster
D. an expert in birds
4.The most important lesson the boy learned from the incident is that______.
A. birds put in a cage won’t live long
B. you have to be very careful about the food you give to young birds
C. when you capture a young mockingbird, you should keep it away from its mother
D. freedom is valuable to all living creature.

Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who 36 that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot 37 . Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often 38 , assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. The 49 to find jobs, the continuous 50 of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to 51 law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of 52 but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
53 , the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal 54 opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been 55 . The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation(回聲).It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger.“Never set foot in this house again!” stormed Father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining rather desolately(凄涼的).I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me.I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and harmonious.
But now… I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old.We differ in our ways of thinking. He always imposes his opinions and codes of behavior on me.Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it.We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind.My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
In fact, it was nothing.Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps.Perhaps he thought they were useless.I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.I can’t stand his outrageous(蠻橫的) words: “ I can throw you away, let alone these old papers.”
All the lights were off except father’s.
Dad was always like this.Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.
This was how he always was.He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on.“Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been.At last, I decided to open the door.As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks.I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all.Love is second to none.
1. Decide which is the best order of the following according to what happened in the passage.
a.I opened the door and entered the house.
b.Sadly I ran out into the street.
c.I reached the place where I lived and saw my house still brightly lit.
d.I thought of my father’s kindness towards me.
e.I walked about in the street without any aim.
A.b, e, d, c, a B.b, e, c, d, a C.b, e, a, c, d D.b, e, c, a, d
2.What made the writer think of his childhood?
A.The sight of the desolate street lights.
B.The sight of the empty street.
C.The sight of a father with a child in his arms.
D.The sight of light in his own house.
3. Why do you think the father often shouts at his son?
A.Perhaps the father is getting older and older.
B.Perhaps the son has already grown up.
C.Perhaps they never agree with each other.
4. What conclusion can you draw after reading the passage?
A.The father is actually kind to his son.
B.The father treats his son in an unfair way.
C.The father is neither kind nor cruel to his son.
D.The father is always finding fault with his son.

“When one of the doctors criticizes(批評) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong,” says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction(反應(yīng)) to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
Try to be objective(客觀的).When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself. “I had put everything I had into making that sale,” Sol says. “And I felt that I had failed as a person.I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure.”
Take time to cool down. Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
Take positive(積極的) action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be “nothing”. “I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there ,” says Sheila. “His criticisms didn’t really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them.” In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job However, that’s an extreme(極端的) reaction.
You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth(深入的) discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key, in any case , is to have a reasonable plan.
64. When Sol was criticized by his employer, he________.
A. argued bitterly with his employer
B. was angry and gave up his job
C. was sorry for what he did
D. was sad and self-pitying
65. According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because ________.
A. people may have a mistaken idea of what you did
B. you should welcome other people’s opinions
C. people may discuss it with you in depth
D. you need time to understand yourself
66. When the writer says that “The best answer may be ‘ nothing’ ”,he means you may
decide _________.
A. to take no notice of the criticism B. to argue with your boss
C. you need to change your job D. you’ve done nothing wrong
67.The writer thinks Sheila might decide to leave her job because her boss______.
A.didn’t like her appearance B. refused to change his opinion
C.made an unreasonable critcism D.refused to talk to her about the criticism
