17.Kendall Ciesemier is the founder of charity Kids Caring 4 Kids,an organization she created after seeing a show on the difficult situation of AIDS orphans (孤兒) in Africa.Ciesemier was inspired to try to change the lives of those affected by AIDS and to encourage other children to do the same. She tells us of the power her personal story has in showing others they too can make a difference.
You saw Oprah's show on AIDS orphans when you were 11-do you remember how you felt?
When I saw the show I was shocked.I had never heard of AIDS before and was concerned that kids were growing up without parents and no one had troubled to ask for my help.
I wanted to create a place for kids to get involved and a place where their small contributions would be valued and celebrated.I also felt that I needed to take immediate action myself.I found an orphan sponsorship (贊助) program online and an eight-year-old girl from Mauritania who needed my help.I started there and Kids Caring 4 Kids grew from that experience.
How has your own illness inspired you to help others?
Growing up with a rare liver (肝臟) disease made me feel different, which I think attracted me to others who were different and those struggling with something.I knew how I felt and I wanted to help reduce that feeling in someone else.I always wanted to support people.Growing up with an illness gave me empathy (移情) for others.
How does your own story inspire others?
My own personal story is evidence that people can give from anywhere.I started Kids Caring 4 Kids from a hospital room.I started by helping one person and it snowballed from there. When I share my story,I think that's what affects people the most-the fact that I started all of this during a time of personal struggle and weakness. If I could do that, then they can do something too.

4.One day when I was 12,my mother gave me an order:I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem-inability to read.
In the library,I found my way into the"Children's Room".I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye.It presented a picture of a beagle.I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning,he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的) to my dog.I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,Amos, the Beagle with a Plan.Unknowingly,I had read the title.Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush,I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story,my mind continued the final scene of reunion,on and on,until my own lost dog and I were,in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world.I suddenly realized something:I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it.Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my"miraculous"(奇跡般的) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
5.The author's mother told him to borrow a book in order toD.
A.make him learn more about weapons
B.encourage him to do more walking
C.let him spend a meaningful summer
D.help cure him of his reading problem
6.The book caught the author's eye becauseC.
A.he liked children's stories very much
B.it contained pretty pictures of animals
C.it reminded him of his own dog
D.he found its title easy to understand
7.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?B
A.The author has had happy summers ever since.
B.The author has become a successful writer.
C.The author's mother read the same book.
D.The author's mother rewarded him with books.
8.Which one could be the best title of the passage?B
A.My Passion for Reading
B.The Charm of a Book
C.Mum's Strict Order
D.Reunion with My Beagle.

1.Staying healthy is important, but many people neglect (忽視) their health because they don't think they have the time to look after it.It's not just a time matter; people think it's boring to spend time on their health. In fact, you can do some simple things to get healthier and have fun.
There are some fun things that hardly seem like they are for keeping you healthy at all,but they do help. The first thing you can do is singing.Singing improves your oxygen flow, which in turn is good for your skin and immune system(免疫系統(tǒng)).It's also good for your brain.Another feel-good and health-improving activity is laughing. You can watch a funny movie.Laughing is a healthy way to reduce stress and pain, improve brain function, lower blood pressure and protect the heart.
Laughing and singing might go together, but for something completely normal that you do every day,you should eat to stay healthy. It's unhealthy not to eat breakfast or try to work on an empty stomach. You can eat some fruit or other healthy snacks instead of missing a meal.
Exercise is important to staying healthy, but it often feels more like work than fun.One thing you can do to have more fun is attend a dance class.Dancing in a safe environment is good exercise as well as fun.Taking classes in kung fu can be a lot of fun too.It can be a great way to lose weight, but you should probably consult your doctor before starting if you are in bad health or very overweight.

2.Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war?War is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it.Modern skill has changed this.Either man will stop war,or war will stop man.For the present,it is nuclear weapons that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological( 細菌的 ) or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in stopping war, there would be no danger for us.To do this,we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way,not by contests of force,in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (大屠殺 ),but by judging in accordance with agreed rules of law.It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意識形態(tài))would prevent war.I believe this to be a complete error. All ideologies are based upon beliefs without proof which are,at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Those people who believe them are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided.Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago.It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the bomb.
24.From the first paragraph we can know thatA.
A.dangerous weapons are forbidden in modern society
B.we may face greater threat from weapons
C.man's idea of victory has changed
D.dangerous weapons can stop war
25.From the passage we can knowC.
A.it is impossible to live without war
B.war will be stopped by modern skill
C.war must be stopped if man wants to survive
D.the difference between East and West will cause war
26.The author believes that the only way to stop war is toC.
A.take possession of stronger weapons
B.let the stronger side take over the world
C.settle international issues through agreements
D.destroy bacteriological and chemical weapons
27.Which of the following words can best describe the author's feeling in writing this passage?D
A.Disappointed.B.Doubtful.C.Worried.D.Hopeful.
