When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It's time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It's to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning (加冠) of a prom king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat.
But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip-hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair takes very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.
If you like the idea of a prom, why don't you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?
What does the word “prom” probably mean in the passage?
A.a(chǎn) dancing competition. B. a party held to celebrate graduation.
C.a(chǎn) fashion show. D. an election.
Which of the following is an economical way to hold the prom?
A.renting a ballroom B.taking a cruise boat
C.holding it in the school gym D.wearing formal dresses
Which of the following clearly indicates that prom is very important to students?
A.They take pictures at the prom. B.They wear formal clothes or special clothes.
C.Music is played at the prom. D.Teachers and parents attend it.
Why do some students attend the prom with their friends?
A.They want to be elected by their friends us the Prom King or Queen.
B.They don’t like to be accompanied by their parents.
C.They don’t want to depend on their parents.
D.They will part with their friends in a short time.

Teens’ lives hit by economy
Some teenagers are crossing their dream colleges off their lists. Others are thinking of skipping(略過)their senior trips or reducing prom(畢業(yè)舞會(huì))costs. Many are finding their work hours cut while their expenses rise.
So, who exactly is punishing them?Is it their parents, teachers or employers? No, it’s the economy(經(jīng)濟(jì)狀況).
If you are like most teenagers, you probably don’t understand what “recession”, “negative economic growth” and “subprime mortgage crisis (次貸危機(jī))”actually mean. And you probably don’t spend your days watching the ups and downs of the stock market.
It’s safe to say that most teens don’t know much about the economy except for one thing:it’s bad. But just how exactly is the economy affecting teens?
“The single largest thing I have noticed is the recession’s ability to affect my college choice, “said Heather Richars from Downey High School in California, US. “With the economic situation the way it is, I have thought less about going to a private or out-of-state university, and more about public schools in California, mainly because of the price of tuition, “said Richars. “I had been a fan of attending a private school up until this year.”
The economy cuts into other areas of teenagers’ lives, too.
Joey Camarda, a student at Modesto High School in California, who works at an ice cream store, said,“ Probably due to the economy, I have been getting less hours at my job, and because of that, I am not getting enough money to help pay for college.”
Tara Mooney, a senior at Beyer High School, has also begun to notice that money is tight.
“Things are getting expensive,” she said. “When it comes to applying for colleges and wanting to go on senior trips, I have to pick and choose instead of doing it all.”

B.He has to help his mother do more chores. |
C.He has found that he had more time to study. |
D.His plan to pay for college will be hard to realize. |
A.Parents punish their teens by giving them less money. |

SECTION B
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet. (6分)
High School In America
After middle school comes high school, which includes grades 9 through 12. Students are required to take certain subjects like English, social studies, math, science, and physical education. In addition, they choose among elective subjects (選修課程) to complete their high school education. Electives include subjects in technology, music, art, and foreign languages.
Each student in the school has their own locker for books and personal items. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects.
Cheating in any form is strictly prohibited in American schools. And in fact, high school students usually don’t cheat. A student caught cheating or copying from another student faces severe punishment.
Each school holds certain yearly activities, such as homecoming (返校節(jié)), prom night (舞會(huì)), holiday celebrations, etc.
Many high school students have part-time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often babysitting or cutting laws, but later they will likely get a job at a fast-food restaurant, video store, or clothing shop.
