4.The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth,is of great importance to African ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater,it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the termsof existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day,it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor.By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

18.It took 100years,but finally,scientists,from CalTech,MIT and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration,proved Albert Einstein's theory that gravitational(引力的) waves exist.The waves were predicted as part of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity nearly 100years ago.It was the theory of the physics behind the workings of our world and the universe.The idea was that the waves are like ripples in space,caused by some of the violent and energetic processes in the Universe.For example,two black holes crashing into each other.
What are these gravitational waves?Well,imagine throwing a rock into a pond.When the rock hits the flat surface of the water,it creates ripples or waves.Space time is like the surface of the water.So that means gravitational waves are like the ripples moving out from where the rock hits the water.It might be hard to understand,but those gravitational waves expand and contract space and time as they move through space.And when they get to the Earth,the waves pass through,and contract and expand the planet as the wave goes by.
It was Einstein who said these gravitational waves should be observable.But these are not huge waves.They are very,very small,which is why it took so long to find them.You cannot see them with your eyes.They are smaller than the size of an atom.
How did the scientists find them?For years,scientists have been watching two black holes in another galaxy faraway with the help of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.The two were spinning around each other,moving closer and closer together.When they finally crashed into each other,it was with such power and force,that gravitational waves rang throughout the universe,like a giant bell.Those waves,traveling at the speed of light,finally reached the Earth,some 1.3billion years later.They are the same waves that the scientists announced this past week.
The National Science Foundation tweeted that each of the black holes was thought to be 29to 36times the mass of our sun.So,what does this discovery mean?Abhay Ashtekar,a Penn State physicist,who was not on the discovery team,said:"Our understanding of the heavens changed dramatically."

72.According to the 1st paragraph,we can learn thatA.
A.gravitational waves were part of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity
B.scientists proved that gravitational waves existed 100years ago
C.gravitational waves were the theory of the physics behind the universe
D.gravitational waves result from two black holes crashing into each other
73.From the passage we can know that the gravitational wavesD.
A.a(chǎn)re not supposed to be observed.
B.a(chǎn)re very huge.
C.a(chǎn)re easy to be found.
D.can't be seen with our eyes.
74.Why did scientists spend years watching two black holes?B
A.Because they wanted to see how the two black holes crashed into each other.
B.Because they wanted to find the gravitational waves.
C.Because they wanted to see the gravitational waves reach the Earth.
D.Because they wanted to know how black holes formed.
75.What can we infer from the passage?C
A.The discovery has no relation to Albert Einstein's theory
B.Throwing a rock into a pond can generate gravitational waves
C.The discovery will considerably affect people's understanding of universe
D.gravitational waves can't contract and expand the Earth.

19.Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is a famous tourist attraction in Utah where visitors can see arches (拱門) and other beautiful rock formations.
Canyonlands National Park is a wild,lonely area of rocks,rivers and desert plants.Only Native Americans,cowboys,and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in 1964.Even today,it is difficult to walk or ride through the park.The roads are still made of dirt.Driving requires a special vehicle.The National Park Service says Canyonlands National Park is wild America.
Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations.At the center of the park are two deep canyons carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers.Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park.
One of these areas is called the Maze District.This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2,000years ago.Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficult to reach.The area is one of the loneliest and wildest areas in the United States.
Another area of the park is called the Needles.It includes long,thin,red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand.
A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it.A onehour trip in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park's red rocks,arches and flat areas where ancient Indian people once lived.
From high in the air,visitors can clearly see the third area of the park-a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the sky.The island was formed between the two rivers.
Another interesting formation is called the Upheaval Dome.This is a huge hole about four hundred and fifty meters deep and one point five kilometers wide.It is considered to be the most unusual geological (地質(zhì)的) structure in the area.

33.Why is Canyonlands National Park referred to as wild America?B
A.No vehicle is available to go through the park.
B.The park today still remains as it was in the past.
C.There is no access for people to get close to it.
D.A variety of wild animals and plants grow in it.
34.What do we know about the Maze District?C
A.No one is allowed to explore the area.
B.It is known to the outside world.
C.Its rock art dates back over 2,000years.
D.It is the loneliest and wildest place in the US.
35.In order to have a good view of the park,you should go sightseeingA.
