Love and concern 4 Nancy’s childhood. She , along with her younger sister, was  by her mother and father. Nancy’ parents were 6  in her schoolwork, making her excellent at school. On the other hand, Richard’s childhood lacked love. His parents 7  him up to his grandparents when they failed to take care of him 8 . His grandmother took care of him most of his growing up years.9 , since his sister didn’t live with him, he never really got to10 her.
Another difference is their career choice. Nancy has always been a 11 and made a choice to work in a variety of different12 settings: doctor’s offices, hospitals, nursing homes and a visiting nurse. Her13 part was working with pediatrics(小兒科)。 However,  Richard14 to work in the business world. He prefers to work with15rather than with people.
A third difference is their16. Nancy is always on the go. She goes to yard sales, out to eat,and enjoys nature. She is17; has five children, thirteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren. 18, Richard likes to stay home and do things alone. He is single and has no children.
I am very 19 for the fact I have two similar yet very different friends, Nancy and Richard. This has 20 me that anyone can be positive thinker. And it is also what makes my friendship with both of them very intriguing(有趣的) and challenging.

A kindergarten teacher decided to let her class play a game. The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates, so the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she cannot forgive(寬。.
So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had 2 potatoes; some 3, while some had up to 5 potatoes.
The teacher then told the children to carry the potatoes with them wherever they go (even to the toilet) for one week. With days passing by, the children started to complain because of the unpleasant smell let out by the rotten (腐爛) potatoes they were carrying.
Those children who have 5 potatoes really began to feel the weight of the heavier bags. After one week, the children were happy to hear that the teacher had finally ended the game. The teacher asked: "How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for one week?" The children started complaining of the trouble that they had to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go.
Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game. The teacher said: "This is exactly the situation when you carry your hatred(仇恨)for somebody inside your heart. The burden(負擔)of hatred will pollute your heart and you will end up carrying an unnecessary burden with you wherever you go.

Adults usually do not remember most of the things that are taught by their teachers at school. But this story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I think of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning, and my teacher was teaching us on important things in life and about devoting ourselves to what is important to us. This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would get onto the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He would do this every single day of his life. He sat at the same street corner and begged for almost 20 years.
His house was dirty, and a stench (惡臭) came out of the house and it smelled terrible. The neighbors could not stand the smell any more, so they called for the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door and cleaned the house. There were small bags of money all over the house that he had collected over the years.
The police counted the money, and they soon realized that the old man was a millionaire (百萬富翁). They waited outside his house expecting to share the good news with him. When the old man arrived home that evening, one of the officers told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was a rich man now, a millionaire.
But the old man said nothing at all; he went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, sat at the street corner and continued to beg.
Clearly, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant (有意義的) for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.
小題1:The neighbor called the police because ______.
A.the old man kept begging money from them every day
B.there was something dangerous in the old man’s house
C.the old man wouldn’t buy tickets for the train
D.they couldn’t bear the smell from the old man’s house
小題2:When the old man knew he was a millionaire, he ______.
A.remained calmB.became excited
C.felt worriedD.became nervous
小題3:What lesson do we learn from the story?
A.Make great plans for your life.
B.Keep on doing what you like.
C.Do something that is good to society.
D.Depend on yourself rather than others.

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed because no examination is perfect, but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected school? And from families known to them, a form of favouritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates(畢業(yè)證) to prove he is suitable for a job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsuitability(不合適)of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his school's reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child form the favoured school.
The opponents(反對者)of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils.According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.
小題1:The underlined word "favouritism" in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that ___.
A.bright children also need certificates to get satisfying jobs.
B.children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs
C.poor children with certificates are favoured in job markets
D.children attending ordinary schools achieve great success
小題2:What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author?
A.Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.
B.There would be more opportunities and excellence.
C.Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.
D.Children's job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.
小題3:The opponents of the examination system will agree that____.
A.jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection
B.computers should be selected to take over many jobs
C.special classes are necessary to keep the school standards
D.schools with academic subjects should be done away with
小題4:The passage mainly focuses on ____.
A.schools and certificatesB.examinations and equality

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:
“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”
“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”
But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”
I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.
Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (責怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.
This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (標準) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.
Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.
小題1:Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A.A friend in need is a friend indeed
B.How to make friendship last for ever
C.You are who your friends are
D.Friends are the most important in one’s success
小題2:The underlined sentence “they’re rubbing off on you” in Paragraph 6 means ______.
A.they’ll push you aheadB.they’ll influence you
C.they’ll cover your shortcomingsD.they’ll help you achieve your goal
小題3:The musicians’ words at the beginning are written mainly to show ______.
A.the musicians’ living conditions are quite poor
B.people have poor taste in music
C.people have different attitudes towards the same thing
D.young people have greater chances of succeeding
小題4:By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.
A.improve a lot in making more friends
B.come to the right way of making friends
C.develop a better relationship with your friends
D.a(chǎn)rrange the time with your friends properly

Lexi Peters, a 14-year-old girl in New York, loves hockey. She’s not only good at playing on her after-school team, but also at playing hockey video games. But when Peters played the popular NHL (National Hockey League) games made by Electronic Arts, something really bothered her. The virtual (虛擬的) character in the game could only be a boy — not a girl.
She didn’t think that was reasonable. There must be many girls playing hockey in the US. So she wrote a letter to Electronic Arts.
“Being represented by a man is unfair to women and girl hockey players,” Peters wrote. “Women’s hockey is a fast-growing sport. I am confident that I’m not the only woman interested in the opportunity to create herself in the game.”
Several weeks later, Peters received an unexpected e-mail from the senior producer for EA Sports’ NHL games, David Littman. “Hi, Lexi,” the e-mail began. “We agree with you!”
Electronic Arts said it would create a female player in the game. “I was thinking you could be the model,” Littman wrote. Peters almost couldn’t believe it. Later, she sent photos of herself taken at all different angles (角度).
And so, when Electronic Arts released the newest version of their game, NHL 12, this fall, Peters was the face of the female player. She can now skate with the NHL’s great players. “It’s strange at first, but you get used to it,” said Peters. “It’s really funny and cool.”
For Peters, there is also an important lesson that she will take with her the rest of her life. “If you have something to say, and you think it’s important, go for it!” she said.
小題1:What bothered Peters when playing NHL games?

A.girls were not allowed to play hockey in the past
B.female players can be represented by men
C.boys don’t like to play hockey with girls
D.more and more girls are interested in hockey
小題3:What was David Littman’s opinion of Peters’ letter?

C.He agreed to it.D.He voted against it.
小題4:Peters’ experience tells us that we should ________.

I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question—What is a good person?
At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students—a young man of about thirty—described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his five-year-old son were decorating the Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.
So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him, “Give him one of your toys.” At the words, the little boy quickly picked up some toy, and his father said to him, “No, no-give him your favorite toy.”
And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!” He cried; he refused. But the father, like a big tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.”
And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited in the living room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited and waited.
What do you think happened?
After a couple of minutes, his son came running back into the living room, his face radiant (喜氣洋洋). “Daddy,” he said, “can I do that again?”
I think I have got the answer to the question.
小題1:From the passage, we can learn that in Mexico ________.
