At lunch time one day, a week before her mother’s birthday, Sally decided to have a quick sandwich and a cup of coffee instead of her usual 1 in the college hall, and then go 2 near her college to try to find her mother a nice present . When she had been looking for half an hour, she3across a shop that was selling umbrellas cheap and 4 that one of those would solve her problem, since her mother had lost hers the month before.
“Now which 5 shall I choose?” She thought. “Well, I think a black one would be the most useful really. You can carry that when you are wearing 6 of any color, can’t you?” So having made up her 7, she bought a lovely black umbrella and took it back to the college with her 8her classes finished.
On her way back home in the train that evening, she felt hungry, because she had had such a small lunch, so she went 9 to the buffet car for another sandwich and another cup of coffee. She had 10the black umbrella above her seat in the compartment, but when she got back, it was11! When she had left the compartment there had been no other passengers in it, but now there were three.
Sally burst into 12when she saw that the umbrella was no longer there.the other passengers felt very sorry for her and asked what was the 13. When she explained that the black umbrella she had bought 14her mother had disappeared, and she had to get out at the next 15 , the three other passengers asked her for her mother’s 16, in order to be able to send the umbrella on to her in case someone had 17 it by mistake not on18, and brought it back after sally had got out of the train.
The next week, Sally heard 19 her mother, her letter said, “Thank you very much for your lovely presents, but why did you send me 20black umbrellas?”

When the research on the effect of electric fields on E.coli was begun in 1962, it was essential that a biologist–specifically, a microbiologist–contributed to the project. She does not want her name used because she did not become a scientific researcher for fame, but rather for the challenge of putting pieces of a scientific puzzle together.
As a girl, she was inspired by the work of great scientists: she read the story of the cure of malaria in the Panama Canal; she also read a biography of Madame Curie. These accounts inspired her to pursue a career in scientific research. After high school, she worked for the Michigan Department of Health, where she did research in biology and microbiology. There, her colleagues saw her talent and encouraged her to pursue science as a career. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in 1948 in medical technology.
When she began working at Michigan State in the early 1960s,
she was balancing the demands of scientific research with the needs
of her family. At that time both of her children were in school. She
would work in the lab in the morning while they were at school,
go home to see them at lunch, return to the lab for the afternoon, go
home for dinner, and return to the lab in the evening, if necessary.
At that time, there were fewer women scientists working than
there are today, but she encountered several in her career. At the
Michigan Department of Health, many of her colleagues were women and, consequently, she did not feel isolated because of her gender–nor did she feel that she was treated differently because she was a woman.
While working at Michigan State, she also felt that she was treated with respect by her peers. Her colleagues, among them doctors and Ph.D.chemists, all treated her as an equal. On the whole, she believes that there is not a great deal of difference between men and women in science.
56.Why does the woman scientist refuse to let out her name?
A.Because she is a shy lady.
B.Because she doesn’t mind her fame.
C.Because she never takes pride in her research.
D.Because she never works for her fame.
57.What is the noble lady scientist really interested in?
A.The life stories of other women scientists.
B.Biology and microbiology.
C.The secret of the success of the other scientists.
D.The difference between men and women scientists.
58.Who helped and encouraged her to carry on her scientific research?
A.Her family and friends.                             B.Madame Curie.
C.Her colleagues and other scientists.              D.Some of the officials.
59.What is the whole passage mainly about?
A.The life story of a famous woman scientist with great success.
B.A brief introduction about an unknown great woman scientist.
C.The new development of a special woman scientist.
D.The secret of an infamous woman scientist.

Welcome every morning with a smile. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don’t waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail.
Starting the day right can give good momentum (動(dòng)力) for the rest of the day. Having a power morning is a key factor for a fruitful day. Here are some tips on getting the most out of the morning.
Wake up early. In theory, there’s no difference in waking up early or late as long as you get the proper amount of sleep. However, there is a psychological advantage when you wake up earlier than the average person and then you’ll have more time to do preparation before engaging in the real world.
Exercise. Good health is always a benefit with exercise, but studies have also shown that morning exercise helps you to sleep better at nights.
Eat breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. According to the Mayo Clinic, we should choose three from the following four: fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, and protein. Did you know that you can actually gain weight when you skip breakfast?
Take a shower. When you shower, do you do it in the morning or at night? I used to shower in the evenings, but I found that morning showers helped me to be more alert.
Prioritize (優(yōu)先) your To-Do list. Leo coined the acronym MIT to mean “most important tasks.” Our to-do list might be never ending, but put on top of the list a couple of urgent tasks that will define the day to be a successful one.
Check your emails. Only once. Getting a lot of emails can be very distractive. You actually are more productive when you check them only a few times at fixed time of the day. I only do them 2-3 times a day—once in the morning, once at lunch, and one more as it gets toward the end of the day.
