The Australian state of New South Wales rolled out “high definition detection cameras" on Sunday, designed to catch drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.

Andrew Constance, New South Wales' minister for roads, said the "world-fist" technology would target illegal cell phone use through "fixed and mobile cameras". The cameras will use artificial intelligence to review images and detect illegal use of cell phones, according to Transport for NSW.

Images identified as being likely to contain a driver illegally using a cell phone would then be verified by traffic police. Those images would be securely stored and managed.

Over the next three years, 45 portable cameras would be set up across the state, in unknown locations, and without warning signs, CNN branch Sky News Australia reported.

For the first three months, drivers caught out by the technology would receive a warning letter, Transport for New South Wales said in a statement, after which the drivers would face a fine of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and loss of points on their drivers' license.

“The NSW Government is serious about reducing our state's road deaths and launching mobile phone detection cameras is another way we will do this." Con stance said in a statement.

Officials said that a trial of the technology earlier in the year had caught more than 100,000 drivers illegally using a phone behind the wheel. Some 329 people died this year on New South Wales' roads, Reuters news agency reported, compared with 354 people for 2018, according to official statistics.

1Why does the NSW Government set up detection cameras?

A.To get some real-time information about the traffic.

B.To monitor people crossing the street casually.

C.To catch drivers using cell phones illegally.

D.To improve the work efficiency of the police.

2What docs the underlined word "verified” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Described.B.Restored.

C.Edited.D.Confirmed.

3What can we infer from the passage?

A.Locations of the cameras will be informed in advance.

B.Illegal driving in school zones is punished more severely.

C.Illegal drivers will be fined once cameras are set up.

D.Cameras are the first attempt for the government to cut road deaths.

4What's the officials, attitude towards the trial of the technology?

A.Supportive.B.Disapproving.

C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.

文章第一段“The Australian state of New South Wales rolled out “high definition detection cameras" on Sunday, designed to catch drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.”可知,為了抓到那些開車打電話的司機,澳大利亞政府開展高清攝像頭的工作。開車打電話是違法的,是安裝攝像頭的主要原因,所以結(jié)合選項,可以得出C項符合題意。

2詞意猜測題。文章中講“Images identified as being likely to contain a driver illegally using a cell phone would then be verified by traffic police.” 被拍照片可以從第五段“, drivers caught out by the technology would receive a warning letter, Transport for New South Wales said in a statement, after which the drivers would face a fine of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and loss of points on their drivers' license.”

A. Locations of the cameras will be informed in advance. 而文中第四段“45 portable cameras would be set up across the state, in unknown locations, and without warning signs”可知,45便攜設(shè)想頭會被放置在不知道的地方,也不會有警告標(biāo)識出現(xiàn)。 C. Illegal drivers will be fined once cameras are set up. 而文中第六段“drivers caught out by the technology would receive a warning letter, Transport for New South Wales said in a statement, after which the drivers would face a fine of up to $344, or $457 in a school zone, and loss of points on their drivers' license.” B. Illegal driving in school zones is punished more severely. D. Cameras are the first attempt for the government to cut road deaths. 而文中“launching mobile phone detection cameras is another way we will do this.”

Supportive.

比如第3小題,A項是把文章中“unknown locations, and without warning signs”沒有警示標(biāo)識,不知道位置換成了“Locations of the cameras will be informed in advance”位置被提前告知,A項是錯誤的。

About six years ago, I was sitting on a plane next to a woman who was extremely energetic. I was tired and wanted to take a nap, but she tapped me on the shoulder to introduce herself.

"Hi, my name is Helga."

As we talked, it came up that I had started an organization in high school called R.A.K.E. (Random Acts of Kindness, Etc.). As I described what we did, Helga got very serious and said to me, "There is nothing more important in the world than kindness."

I was curious about what she had said, and as the plane took off. she began telling me a story about the last time she had flown.

It was three years ago and she was heading back to her hometown because her father had become very ill.

Just as the plane was about to leave, her father's doctor called to inform her that her father had suddenly passed away. For the three hour plane ride, she sat in stunned(受驚的) silence,.

When she arrived at the airport in her hometown, she walked to the nearest bench(長椅),sat down and cried.

For two hours, she sat and wept while thousands of people just walked on by.

"Not a single person stopped and asked if I was OK that day. It was on that day that I realized kindness isn't normal. "

Helga's words have stuck with me for all these years. I'm reminded all the time that for many of us, kindness is not usually our "default setting (默認(rèn)設(shè)置)".

We spend so much time worrying about our own problems that we walk by or ignore other people in need of a bit of kindness.

So, I've made it my mission to do my part in making kindness "normal".

Now, I travel to schools all across the US to speak about compassion(同情),empathy(同感),and love.

I' m proud to share my stories with students, teachers, and parents about our need for character, compassion, and kindness.

Providing young people with practical ways to exercise kindness makes my job more satisfying than any other I can think of.

And when I give my talks, I always have my conversation with Helga in the back of my mind.

1We can know from the first four paragraphs that the author___________.

A.was always eager to make friendsB.was angry to be disturbed by Helga

C.found Helga a very serious personD.was interested in Helga's story

2During Helga's trip to her hometown, she___________.

A.couldn't help but cry on the flightB.blamed the doctor for not calling her earlier

C.came to realize the value of kindnessD.received help from passengers beside her

3How did Helga' s story influence the author?

A.He found a better way to exercise kindness.

B.He realized that most people were nice and kind.

C.He realized the importance of using stories in speech.

D.He began teaching others about kindness and found it rewarding.

4The author wrote this article mainly to___________.

A.show why kindness isn't normal.B.explain how he developed his kindness career

C.give advice on how to practice kindnessD.share a touching story about kindness

Last Friday, Mike Babbitt was about to leave the Bremerton Yacht Club to go gas up when the engine of the boat caught fire.

“The wind was blowing from the North. It would have blown the boat into the yacht (快艇) club so I just gave it all the power I could to get it away from the yacht club,” he told Komo News. However, that wasn’t the end of Mike’s mission (使命). Still on the boat were his two bulldogs Pearl and Hootie. He placed the dogs on a paddleboard before jumping into the water himself.

He explained to Komo News that he didn’t even have time to grasp a life coat or his oxygen. Mike served in the army for five years in a special police unit in Iraq and Afghanistan. During his time in the army, he suffered a pancreatic (胰腺的) attack that forced him to rely on oxygen treatment for the rest of his life.

Still, he succeeded in doing the unthinkable. “I just slid into the water and started paddling away from the fire and I could still feel the heat from the fire,” Mike told the news reporters. Mike was then rescued by some friends and later transported to a nearby hospital, where his wife Jamie met him. The fire is especially heartbreaking for Mike and his wife as the yacht was their only house. They had early sold their home and saved up in order to live a life on the water.

However, Mike is just happy to have survived. “I think it is the gift of God watching over us,” Mike told Komo News. “You have to put it exactly that were still alive and we’re still together.” A GoFundMe has since been created to help the Babbitts following the fire.

1Where was Mike going when the yacht caught fire?

A.The club.B.The boat.

C.A police unit.D.A filling station.

2What did Mike do in the end?

C.Put out the fire.D.Saved Pearl and Hootie.

3By writing Paragraph 3, the author intends to ________.

A.sum up the paragraphs before itB.continue talking about the incident

C.add some background informationD.introduce a new subject for discussion

4What probably is continued with the passage?

A.Opening up about the terrible fire.B.Raising money to help the Babbitts.

C.Being thankful for what God gives.D.Realizing a dream of living on the water.

It was winter but people were everywhere in London at the weekend. They were in T-shirts or sandals (涼鞋). Monday was another warm day, without a cloud in the sky, and in the late afternoon the light took on a magical, honey-coloured color. It brought to mind one of those summer evenings you experienced in childhood, when you’d be in the park all day and your parents let you stay out until bedtime, and you felt like you were doing something deliciously naughty just by being there.

It wasn’t early summer: it was February. And the entire developed world has been attacking the global ecosystem (全球生態(tài)系統(tǒng)) for many years, and that’s how we go into this pickle.

We should try to hold on to this fact that this is not supposed to be happening. Less than a month ago, there was a video of extreme ( ) cold weather coming out of Chicago. Water poured from cups immediately froze on its way to the ground. OK, that was on the other side of the world, and its temperature was- 11 then.

On Monday, though, the temperature hit 20.3 in Ceredigion, West Wales: the highest February temperature ever recorded in Britain and the first time the temperature had reached 20 in winter.

This isn’t good, is it? The 10 hottest years on record have all happened within the past 20 years, the five hottest were the last five. Yet the beaches and the beer gardens fill up, while the papers describe the weather as wonderful. There were those who gave in to the heat wave a little too easily. They let themselves forget it was winter and found themselves, when the sun went down and the temperature dropped, suddenly shaking and unprepared for the cold. It feels uncomfortably like a symbol.

1What does the author want to do in the first paragraph?

A.To introduce a beautiful summer.

B.To encourage kids to play outside.

C.To share his daily activities with us.

D.To describe the scene of a warm winter.

2What does the underlined word pickle in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Daily activity.B.Unusual place.

C.Difficult situation.D.Quick development.

3Why is Chicago’s weather mentioned?

A.To compare it with that of London.

B.To attract more people to Chicago.

C.To show it is well-known for an online video.

D.To encourage more people to post videos online.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The author hoped people stayed indoors.

B.The author worries about global warming.

C.The papers misled the public in weather reports.

D.The papers asked the public to prepare for the cold.
