【題目】Scientists investigated why Ebola virus is so deadly when it spreads from animals to humans and then from human-to-human contact. The research team looked at the Zaire Ebola virus in an animal system to understand how it gains strength. This virus is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa. They found thatinitiallythe animal systems were notaffected by the virus, but succeeding transmission(傳送) into other animals caused the virus to “hot up” and become more severe.

The team analyzed the viruses at different stages and were able to identify several changes in its geneticmaterial that were associated with increased disease.

Professor Julian Hiscox, who led the study from the University’s Institute of Infection and Global Health, explains: “The work tells us that theevolutionary goal of Ebola virus is to become more fatal.”

“We were able to show through genetic analysis which parts of the virus are involved in this process. The information we have gathered will now allow us to monitor for such changes in an outbreak as well as develop future treatment strategies.”

Professor Roger Hewson, leading the study from Public Health England, Porton Down, said: “Ebola virus is such adestructiveinfection to the people affected by the disease and the economy of West Africa.”

“Our understanding of Ebola virus biology is way behind that of other viruses and ourcooperation shows how we can bring together our specialists’ skills to close this knowledge gap.”

Professor Miles Carroll, a co-author of the work, said: “This study has allowed the team to be at the forefront of developing methodologies to analyze patient samples recently taken by the European Mobile Laboratory from West Africa to understand disease evolution during the current outbreak.”

【題目】閱讀理解。

Dear Mr. Wolfson,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of one of our citizens who I believe should receive some special recognition for dedicated (敬業(yè)的) community service. The person I recommend is Elizabeth Samuelson. I believe you know her in your position as volunteer coordinator (協(xié)調(diào)員).

I have known Elizabeth for more than 20 years as both a friend and a neighbor. During that time I have seen her work tirelessly on scores of community projects and committees. As far as I know, she has never received any kind of recognition from the community for her work. I believe she should be given some sort of special recognition.

Just last year alone, she worked on at least six different community projects including the Park Renewal Project and the Heritage Homes FundRaising Banquet. In addition, she is a weekly driver for the MealsonWheels program and she visits patients in the care unit on a regular basis. Whenever a project or committee needs her, she will put herself into the work wholeheartedly. I'm sure that if you check with a few of your staff members who have been there over the years, they will confirm Elizabeth's community service record and probably be able to add many examples to the few I have given here. By the way, Elizabeth has no idea that I am writing this. She is a humble (謙虛的) person, and if she were aware of it, she would not allow me to send it.

I thought about writing such a letter about her a nmber of times in the past but just never took action. Then last week, I noticed in the paper that you sponsor (主辦) an annual dinner at which dozens of awards are given out to people with much less community service than Elizabeth. In fact, I checked with her and she has never even been invited to that annual event!

I urge you to correct that omission (疏忽) now and take action to see that Elizabeth is properly recognized for her many years of silent but outstanding service to this community.

Sincerely,

Linda Sullivan

4What can we learn about Mr.Wolfson from the letter?

【題目】Too Good To Go, an app operating in the UK, allows users to order leftover food at a discount from restaurants, according to the website. The goal is to help cut food waste.

Users simply log in, pick a restaurant, pay through the app and then pick up their food at a set time—usually around closing or after peak meal times. Orders through the app cost between 2 British pounds ($2.60) to 3.80 British pounds (about $5). Users aren’t able to pick the food items, but they get an idea of the type of food that will be available, according to Business Green.

Users also have the option to give meals to people in need by donating 1 British pound or more through the app. More than l, l00 meals have been donated so far.

To ensure the entire experience is super eco-friendly. Too Good To Go provides recyclable takeout packaging to participating restaurants.

Restaurants using the app make extra money by selling food what would otherwise have been throw away. And Too Good To Go itself makes money by taking a fee from participating restaurants on each sale.

Founded in Denmark last year. Too Good To Go launched this year in the UK and is expanding to other countries. The app is available in Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, and will be in London later this month.

“Food waste just seems like one of the dumbest(愚蠢) problems we have in this world,” co-founder James Crummie told Business Green. “The restaurant industry is wasting about 600,000 tonnes of food each year, and in the UK alone there are one million people on emergency food parcels from food banks. Why do we have these two massive social issues that are completely connected, yet there is not much going on to address them?”

Too Good To Go has already helped cut a significant amount of waste. So far, the app has saved 600 meals from landfills in the UK, reports Business Green.

1Why is the app introduced into UK according to the passage?

A. To help users find proper restaurants.

B. To reduce food waste in UK.

C. To help people in need of food.

D. To make orders of food much cheaper.

2Which of the following statements are TRUE according to the passage?

A. The app has made some progress in saving food.

B. The app has been used throughout UK by now.

C. You can make money if you are a customer.

D. The restaurants provide recyclable takeout packaging.

3From what James Crummie said we know that ________.

A. it’s stupid for the restaurant industry to waste so much food

B. food bank should provide more food to people in need

C. people don't pay much attention to food problems

D. it’s stupid trying to solve food problems by using the app

4What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. How to use the app.

B. Who benefit from the app.

C. Food waste is the biggest problem.

D. Using an app can reduce food waste.

【題目】閱讀理解。

One early morning, I went into the living room to find my mother reading a thick book called Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again. My interest was aroused only by the fact that the word Poems appeared in big, hot pink letters.

Is it good? I asked her.

Yeah, she answered. There’s one I really like and you’ll like it, too. I leaned forward.

‘Patty Poem,’ she read the title. Who is Patty? I wondered. The poem began:

She never puts her toys away,

Just leaves them scattered where they lay,… 散亂的

The poem was just three short sections. The final one came quickly:

When she grows and gathers poise, 穩(wěn)重

I’ll miss her harum-scarum noise, 莽撞的

And look in vain for scattered toys. 徒勞地

And I’ll be sad.

A terrible sorrow washed over me. Whoever Patty was, she was a mean girl. Then, the shock.

It’s you, honey, My mother said sadly.

To my mother, the poem revealed a parent’s affection when her child grows up and leaves. To me, the she in the poem was horror. It was my mama who would be sad. It was so terrible I burst out crying.

What’s wrong? my mother asked.

Oh Mama, I cried. I don’t want to grow up ever!

She smiled. Honey, it’s okay. You’re not growing up anytime soon. And when you do, I’ll still love you, okay?

Okay, I was still weeping. My panic has gone. But I could not help thinking aboutthat silly poem. After what seemed like a safe amount of time, I read the poem again and was confused. It all fit so well together, like a puzzle. The language was simple, so simple I could plainly understand its meaning, yet it was still beautiful. I was now fascinated by the idea of poetry, words that had the power to make or break a person’s world.

I have since fallen in love with other poems, but Patty Poem remains my poem. After all, Patty Poem gave me my love for poetry not because it was the poem that lifted my spirits, but because it was the one that hurt me the most.

【1】 Why was the writer attracted by the book Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again?

A. It was a thick enough book.

B. Something on its cover caught her eye.

C. Her mother was reading it with interest.

D. It has a meaningful title.

【2】 After her mother read the poem to her, the writer felt ______ at first.

A. sad B. excited

C. horrified D. confused

【3】 The writer’s mother liked to read Patty Poem probably because______.

A. it reflected her own childhood

B. it was written in simple language

C. it was composed by a famous poet

D. it gave her a hint of what would happen

【4】 It can be concluded from the passage thatPatty Poemleads the writer to _______.

A. discover the power of poetry

B. recognize her love for puzzles

C. find her eagerness to grow up

D. experience great homesickness

【題目】Grandparents Answer a Call

As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.

No statistics show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to adult children and grandchildren. Yet there is evidence suggesting that the trend is growing. Even President Obamas mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and move into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study by grandparents. Com, 83 percent of the people said Mrs. Robinson s decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obamas family.

In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t get away from home far enough for fast enough to prove we could do it on our own, says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand , a magazine for grandparents. We now realize how important family is and how important it isto be near them, especially when youre raising children.

Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices, but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.

A.It strengthened her family ties.

B.It improved her living conditions.

BFew people responded sympathetically.

C.83% believed it had a bad influence.

A.They were unsure of themselves.

B.They were eager to raise more children.

C.They wanted to live away from their parents.

DThey had little respect for their grandparents.

4What does the author suggest the grandparents do in the last paragraph?
