Who’s in control of your life? Who’s pulling your strings? For the majority of us,it’s other people—society, colleagues, friends, family or our religious community. We learned this way of operating when we were very young,of course. We were brainwashed. We discovered that feeling important and feeling accepted was a nice experience and so we learned to do everything we could to make other people like us.As Oscar Wilde puts it,“Most people are other people.Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
So when people tell us how wonderful we are,it makes us feel good.We long for this good feeling like a drug—we are addicted to it and seek it out wherever we can. Therefore,we are so eager for the approval(贊同)of others that we live unhappy and limited lives, failing to do the things we really want to.Just as drug addicts and alcoholics live worsened lives to keep getting their fix(一劑毒品),we worsen our own existence to get our own constant fix of approval.
But,just as with any drug, there is a price to pay.The price of the approval drug is freedom—the freedom to be ourselves. The truth is that we cannot control what other people think.People have their own agenda, and they come with their own baggage and,in the end, they’re more
interested in themselves than in you.Furthermore,if we try to live by the opinions of others,we will build our life on sinking sand.Everyone has a different way of thinking, and people change
their opinions all the time. The person who tries to please everyone will only end up getting exhausted and probably pleasing no one in the process.
So how can we take back control? I think there’s only one way—make a conscious decision to stop caring what other people think. We should guide ourselves by means of a set of values—not values imposed from the outside by others, but innate values which come from within. If we are driven by these values and not by the changing opinions and value systems of others,we will live a more authentic, effective, purposeful and happy life.

Researchers in Britain are driving the environmental movement to a new level. A team from the University of Warwick has built what it calls the world’s first completely environmentally friendly Formula Three racing car.
The car is made mainly of renewable materials, like plants and vegetables. The structure around the car is made from natural plant fibers and potatoes. The steering wheel(方向盤) is made from root vegetables like carrots. The engine uses bio-fuel made from vegetable oil and waste chocolate.
The new racing car is extremely fast. The car has a top speed of two hundred fifteen kilometers an hour. And it can go from zero to ninety-five kilometers an hour in just two and a half seconds. The racing car meets all of the Formula Three racing requirements except for its biodiesel(生物柴油) engine.
Automobile racing is one of the most widely watched sports in the world. But it is also considered one of the least friendly sports to the environment. Racing cars burn a lot of fuel, and create a lot of air pollution. In recent years, the racing industry has taken steps to protect the environment. More racing companies are now producing cars that use less energy. These cars produce less pollution than cars that depend on traditional fuel, like gasoline.
Last month, the new racing car was set to run in its first competitive race at the Formula Three Championship Final at Brands Hatch. It would have been the first biodiesel-powered car to race at Formula Three. Current Formula Three rules let only gasoline-powered car to compete. Officials needed permission from all of the Formula Three racers for the biodiesel-powered car to compete. They were unable to contact one of the drivers, so the new racing car didn’t appear in the event. In test runs, the new racing car was the fifth fastest among the Formula Three race cars. Supporters are hoping to have the fuel problem solved in time to compete in the next season.
小題1:. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A.What materials the new racing car is made of.
B.Why researchers built the new racing car.
C.The characteristics of the new racing car.
D.The process of the new racing car being designed.
小題2:.According to the passage, the _________ of the new racing car doesn’t meet the Formula Three racing
requirements.
A.speedB.appearanceC.weightD.engine
小題3:. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A.the new racing car is the first environmentally friendly car
B.automobile racing could be forbidden in the near future
C.many people like to watch automobile racing
D.the new racing car will be allowed to compete in the next season of Formula Three racing
小題4:. In recent years, racing companies are producing cars that __________.
A.burn more fuelB.go more quickly
C.produce less pollutionD.cost less money
小題5:.Why didn’t the new racing car compete at the Formula Three Championship Final last month?
A.Because the new racing car still needs testing.
B.Because officials needed each racer’s permission but failed to contact one.
C.Because there’re some technical problems to be solved.
D.Because few drivers think it is fast enough.

Ants have a reputation for strength, organization and teamwork. But researchers have now discovered that a key secret to the success of ants is their ability to identify the importance of age in the work place.
A study of Gentral American leaf-cutter ants has shown that the younger and stronger members are give the toughest job of cutting therough the leaves they harvest.Their sharp youn teeth do this job effectively, but as they get older their teeth become relatively worn and blunt.
But rather than being retired or abandoned by the group, the ageing ants are given a new role more suyted to their physical abilities. They become carriers and teansport the leaves back to the kingdom where they are harvested for food.
The findings by researchers from the University of Oregon and the Oregong State University support previous research showin the survival of a leaf-cutter kingdom depends on the efficiency(效率)of is workers.
“Cuting leaves is hard work,”said Dr.Robert Schofield, who led the research team.“Much of the cutting is done with a V-shaped blade(刀片)between teeth on their jaws. This blade starts out as sharp as the sharpest razor blade that humans have developed.”But over rime the teeth become blunter and the cutting job slows down. The team estimated that, because of this age-related wear,a colony(蟻群)spent twice the energy cutting leaves than it would if all the ants had sharp blades. Its findings support the idea that wear and break can be significant problems for insects as well as largre animals.
Like humans,leaf-cuttre ant recognize that older members of the group can still make a worhwhile contribution to society.“This study shows an advantage of social living that we are familiar with,”said Dr.Schofield.

Dear editor,
I am Paul , a senior English teacher in Linchuan No. 1 Middle School in Jiangxi Province , China. This letter is written to ask for your opinion.
The other day, I met with a multiple - choice exercise. We teachers argued heatedly with each other over its answer. Unfortunately, neither side could convince the other. The sentence is to be attached at the end of the letter. There is no doubt that the reference answer C is correct. But I don’t  think it is the only answer. Personally, I do think A is also a reasonable choice in sense as well as in grammar, if the case is treated from another aspect.
What puzzles me is why we should deal with so many multiple - choice exercises with not rigorous(嚴謹的)enough reference keys. But being a teacher, it’s very important and necessary to make it clear to students which answer is correct, which is more appropriate, and which is the best one. Regrettably, Multiple - choice test, which is a bit old - fashioned in western countries, seems to be quite popular and covers a rather high percentage in all sorts of English tests in China, especially in NMET.
Personally speaking, I don’t think multiple - choice test form making up more than 75 percent of the total scores in college entrance examination is a very good and effective testing method. Instead, more subjective testing forms depending on one’s own thinking and his ability to use the language like key words falling, question answering, paragraph or passage summarizing, English - Chinese or Chinese - English inter - translation, etc. should be applied to English proficiency tests. Through the test forms mentioned above, students’ ability to use the language will be better developed. Consequently, more advanced and outstanding English learners could be picked out. In fact, a test paper focusing on multiple - choice test influences, in a sense, students to form their own language thinking, which hinders(阻礙)the development of their language ability as well. Do you think so?
I am looking forward to your authoritative opinion. Thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Liao

Scientists have found what look like caves on Mars, and say they could be protecting life from the planet’s terrible environment.
The first caves appear as seven mysterious black dots (點) on the pictures which were sent back by NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter. Each as large as a football field, they may be openings into natural caves below the Martian surface.
“If there is life on Mars, there is a good chance that you’d find it in caves,” said Jut Wynne, one of the researchers who noticed the features (特征) while working on a US Geological Survey Mars Cave Detection Program.
Jonathan Clarke, a geologist with the Mars Society of Australia, yesterday described the discovery as exciting.
One photo taken at night by an infrared imager(紅外線成像器) showed one hole to be unusually warm, suggesting hot air may be flowing out.
“I said: ‘Wow, that’s a cave’” Dr. Clarke said excitedly. “People have been looking for these for a long time; now we have found them.”
He agreed such caves could be perfect places to search for life escaping from the bitterly cold, radiation-soaked(充滿輻射的), dry surface.
“Tiny drops of water could collect inside,” he said. “If there are gases coming out, they could provide energy for a whole range of bacteria (細菌). A cave is also a protection from radiation; the surface of Mars is exposed to high levels of space radiation.”
The caves probably formed when tube-shaped lava flows(管狀巖漿流) spread across the planet long ago. The outside of the tubes cooled, forming solid walls, while something hotter inside allowed the remaining to flow out, forming caves.
小題1: What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.How the caves were formed on Mars.
B.How NASA sent the pictures back to earth
C.Caves on Mars may be full of hot air or a sign(跡象)of life.
D.Scientists have completely recognized the surface of Mars.
小題2: We can learn from the passage that __________.

C.it is certain that there is life in these caves
D.the surface of Mars is bitterly cold, radiation-soaked and dry
小題3: According to the passage, Dr. Clarke was so excited because ________.
A.such caves could provide energy for life
B.they had finally found the caves on Mars
C.such caves would be perfect places to search for life
D.There would be life on Mars.
小題4: Necessary conditions for life on Mars mentioned in the passage may include_________.
A.lava and energyB.water and radiation from space
C.gases and lavaD.water and protection from radiation
小題5: what does the underlined word “ the planet” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.the MarsB.the earthC.the cavesD.radiation

Research advances over the past decade have told us that, with a little work, we humans can clone just about anything we want, from frogs to monkeys and probably even ourselves!
So, we can clone things, but why would we want to?
Of all the reasons, cloning for medical purposes has the most potential to benefit large numbers of people. How might cloning be used in medicine?
1. Cloning animal models of disease
Much of what researchers learn about human disease comes from studying animal models such as mice. Often, animal models are genetically engineered to carry disease-causing mutations(變異) in their genes. Creating these transgenic(轉基因的) animals is a time-intensive process that requires trial-and-error and several generations of breeding(培育). Cloning technologies might reduce the time needed to make a transgenic animal model, and the result would be a population of genetically identical animals for study.
2.Cloning stem cells(干細胞) for the treatment of diseases
Stem cells are the body's building blocks, responsible for developing and repairing the body throughout life. As a result, they might be used to repair damaged or diseased organs and tissues. Researchers are currently looking up cloning as a way to create certain human stem cells for the research of diseases.
3. Cloning farm animals for drug production
Farm animals such as cows, sheep and goats are currently being genetically engineered to produce drugs or proteins that are useful in medicine. Just like creating animal models of disease, cloning might be a faster way to produce large herds of genetically engineered animals.
小題1:From Purpose One, we can infer that      .
A.most transgenic animals are clone
B.most animals carry engineered genes
C.most transgenic animal models are not cloned
D.most animals carry disease-causing mutations in their genes
小題2:It can be learned from Purpose Two that cloning technologies can be mainly use do    .
A.create damaged or diseased organs and tissues
B.clone genetically defined human stem cells
C.develop and maintain the body
D.repair the body throughout life
小題3:According to Purpose Three, cloning technologies can be mainly used to      .
A.speed up the producing of genetically engineered animals
B.produce drugs or proteins that are useful in medicine
C.raise genetically engineered cows, sheep and goats
D.produce large herds of animals for human beings

A group of students in Japan have created a realistic robot baby to motivate young people to start planning a family so as to increase the country’s birth rate. The automated (自動化的)doll developed at the University of Tsukuba, called Yotara, laughs and “wakes up” when a rattle is shaken.
He can become angry and sleep like a real baby and he smiles when his stomach is pressed. The robot can also sneeze and have a runny nose, thanks to a heated water pump system. The students of the Graduate school of Comprehensive Human Science at the university created the robot last year with touch sensors. A projector sends the facial features onto a warm silicon balloon which makes up Yotara’s face. The robot’s facial expression and body movements change according to pressure applied to different parts of its body.
The information collected through touch sensors(傳感器)under the silicon skin is processed by a special programme. It then changes the baby’s expression projected onto the balloon-face from behind. There is a hat on the robot’s head and a colorful blanket covering the robot’s limbs which simulate wiggling(擺動) with the help of a geared motor. “We wanted to create a new type of robot that is soft, cuddly and cute,” said project leader Hiroki Kunimura.
“We’d like people to experience the innocent, joyful expressions typical of small babies. Through this experience, it would be great if some people started feeling that they wanted to have their own baby, if they started feeling that work is not everything.”
Japan’s birth rate is among the lowest in the developed world at 1.37%, compared to 2.12% in the United States and l.84%in Britain. Japan is facing serious economic consequences with over a quarter of its citizens expected to be aged over 65 by 20l5.The population is expected to reduce by a third within 50 years if the birth rate does not increase.
小題1:. What is the students’ purpose of creating such a baby?
A.To help old people who live alone.B.To give small children some pleasure
C.To comfort lonely young people.D.To increase the population of Japan.
小題2:What’s the new type of robot like in Hiroki Kunimura’s mind?
A.It can do everything for humans.B.It is clever, humorous and loyal.
C.It is gentle, lovely and smart.D.It makes humans unhappy.
小題3:. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Many young people in Japan don’t want to get married.
B.There may be a lack of workers in Japan in the future.
C.The lifespan(壽命)of Japanese people will decrease in the future.
D.The birth rate in Japan will start to increase slowly soon.

ERATH WEEK---A DIARY OF THE PLANET
Enduring Storms
Several more rounds of severe storms, tornadoes and flash flooding struck many parts of the American Midwest and Northeast as bad weather continued across the US for a second month.

Monsoon Storms
A south-west monsoon has caused havoc in parts of Sri Lanka. Government meteorologists said that unexpected monsoonal winds blew directly across the country from the Southern Hemisphere at about 100km/h, producing several rounds of stormy weather. Nearly 250 houses in the capital Colombo were damaged.
Mt. Etna Erupts
Sicily’s Mount Etna volcano erupted shortly after midnight on July 1, shooting “bombs” of lava nearly 1.5 meters in diameter on the eastern side of the mountain. The 30-minute eruption could be seen for several miles, but did not threaten any nearby villages.
Hurricane
Hurricane Blas lost strength as it moved over cooler waters in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Mexico. Blas formed off southwest Mexico during the previous week, but squalls on the outer fringes of the storm lashed western Michoacan State, killing four people when their wood and cardboard home collapsed.
Monkey Repellent
After years of unsuccessful attempts to keep crop-eating monkeys out of Japanese fields, a Tokyo research team believes that it may have finally found a way to prevent the damage caused by the monkeys. Animal raids on crops were successfully prevented by shooting chilli powder into the air, irritating the eyes and noses of monkeys that passed in front of carefully-placed warning sensors. “We’ve tried al kinds of preventive measures, but the monkeys are smart enough to outwit the tricks, “said Toshiaki Wada, Director of the Tokyo Forestry Experiment Station in western Tokyo.

Should parents ever hit their children?
Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking (打屁股) has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit spanking their child at least once.
I was raised in a zero-tolerance( 零容忍) home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And, no, I don’t feel I was damaged by it.
Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children.
But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn’t the answer.
Two years ago , Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive(好斗的).
Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive (反作用) to their mental development, as well.
Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks (用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.
Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never been spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished. Gunnoe’s research suggests they don’t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked.
There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers. But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline (管教) without ever turning to physical punishment.
小題1: What can we know from the research in the second paragraph?
A.Many of the parents made no response to the survey.
B.More and more people support spanking in public.
C.Most parents have the experience of spanking their children.
D.Many of the parents think they should hit their children.
小題2: According to Marjorie Gunnoe’s research, ________ .
A.the children who have never been spanked do better than those who were sometimes spanked
B.instead of harmless, spanking can have a little benefit
C.spanking has little effect on the children’s future performance
D.the teens who were often spanked are more likely to be aggressive
小題3: In the author’s opinion, the best parents are the ones ______.
A.who often use physical punishmentB.who never use physical punishment
C.who use physical punishment properlyD.who take physical punishment as useful tool
小題4:Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author’s parents were strict with him when he was young.
B.The author thinks his parents’ spanking did no harm to him.
C.Murray Straus thinks spanking has nothing to do with children’s IQs.
D.Some parents spank their children because they can’t control their tempers.
