【題目】Man has a big brain. He can think, learn and speak. Scientists once thought that men are different from animals because they can think and learn. They know that animals can learn—dogs, rats, birds can learn. So scientists are beginning to understand that men are different from animals because they can speak. Animals cannot speak. They make noises when they are afraid, or angry, or unhappy. Apes(猿) can understand some things more quickly than human, one or two have learnt a few words. But they are still different from us. They cannot join words and make sentences; they cannot think like us because they have no language. They can never think about the past or the future.
Language is a wonderful thing. Man has been able to build a modern world because he has language. Every child can speak his own language very well when he is four or five—but no animal learns to speak. How do children learn? What happens when we speak? Scientists do not know.

【題目】China is home to the invention of silk and has a long tradition of producing fine materials for clothing. Not all clothing in ancient or contemporary( 當(dāng)代的) China is made of silk, however. In fact, silk was only available to the wealthy classes(階級(jí)) for much of China's history. Until the introduction of cotton during the Ming Dynasty, from the 14th to the 17th century, the poorer classes wore rough clothing made from fibers (纖維).
In ancient China, the tunic(無(wú)袖長(zhǎng)袍)was particularly popular . Called hanfu(漢服), both men and women could be seen wearing tunics made of different materials. Women's tunics were long and loose(寬松的), extending all the way down to their feet and often cinched with a belt or rope to get tighter(緊). Men's tunics were shorter, usually only extending down to their knees. During the winter, both men and women would wear cotton jackets for warmth. In the winter, men would also wear pants (褲子) or ankle-length skirts into their clothes to keep warm and protect their legs against the cold winter conditions.
Contemporary Chinese clothing is now made of many of the same materials as contemporary clothing found in other countries. Much of the traditional Chinese clothing produced now is made of cotton and silk, but generally contemporary Chinese clothing also contains synthetic (合成的) fibers in with the cotton and silk, such as nylon (尼龍). In addition, linen (亞麻布) is now commonly used in contemporary Chinese clothing, especially during the summer months because it is light and breathable.

C. Lots of contemporary Chinese clothing is made from synthetic fibers.
D. The materials for contemporary Chinese clothing are produced by other countries.

Recently, as the development of the Internet, there is a kind of language calling Web language. Some people even speak Chinese mixed with English letters. The other day our class had a discussion about if we should welcome the Web language.
Forty percent of the students think it ridiculous. They argue that it does no good helping people communicate, nor is it useful for learning English. Besides, it’ll make Chinese more standard and pure, finally ruining our mother tongue. However, 60% of our class is fond of it. They think it is simple, convenience and helpful in expressing them. What’s more, it may make the language more interesting.
Personally, it’s not good habit to use the Web language. It may be popular, but you may also make yourself be misunderstood.

【題目】Freda Bright says, “Only in opera do people die of love.” It’s true. You really can’t love somebody to death. I’ve known people to die from no love, but I’ve never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can’t love one another enough.
A hear-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to the raise.
The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festival meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or --- did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down?
She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read: “Congratulations, darling! I knew you’d get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you.”
Someone has said that the measure of love for his wife is love without measure. What this man feels for his wife is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and soothes her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction.
Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said, “What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family. And love your friends. Love them without measure.”

D. he loves his family members truly, whether they are in good conditions or not
