  Three Yale University professors agreed in a discussion that the automobile was what one of them called“Public Health Enemy No. 1 in this country.”Besides polluting the air and overcrowding the cities, cars are involved in more than half the disastrous accidents, and they contribute to heart disease“because we don't walk anywhere anymore”, said Dr. H. Richard Weinerman, professor of medicine and public health.

  Speaking of many of these man-made dangers to the automobile, Arthur W. Galston, professor of biology, said it was possible to make a kerosene-burning turbine car that would“l(fā)essen smog by a very large factor.”But he expressed doubt whether Americans were willing to give up moving about the countryside at 90 miles an hour in a large vehicle.“America seems wedded to the motor car--every family has to have at least two, and one has to be a convertible (敞篷汽車) with 300 horsepower,”Professor Galston continued.“Is this the way of life that we choose because we treasure these values?”

  For Professor Sears, part of the blame lies with“a society that regards profit (贏利) as a supreme value, under the illusion that anything that's technically possible is, therefore, morally justified”. Professor Sears also called the country's dependence on its modern automobiles“terrible economics”because of the large horsepower used simply“moving one individual to work.”But he admitted that Americans have painted themselves into a corner by allowing the national economy to become so dependent on the automobile industry.

  “The solution”, Dr. Weinerman said,“is not to find a less dangerous fuel but a different system of inner-city transportation. Because of the increasing use of cars, public transportation has been allowed to wither (衰弱) and grow worse, so that if you can't walk to where you want to go, you have to have a car in most cities,”he declared. This, in turn, Dr. Weinerman contended, is responsible for the“arteriosclerosis”(動(dòng)脈硬化) of public roads, for the pollution of the inner city and for the middle-class movement to the suburbs.

Scars of Love

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(短吻鱷) was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched (抓住) his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war (拔河比賽) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, rushed from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred (留下傷疤) by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma (外傷), asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, “Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”

You and I can identify with (認(rèn)同) that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friends, are because we have refused to let go.
