     Motorists who used to listen to the radio or their favorite tunes on CDs may have a new way to
entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface.
     A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of "melody roads",
which use cars as tuning forks(音叉)to play music as they travel.
     The concept works by using grooves(凹槽). They are cut at very specific intervals in the road
surface. The melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.
     Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of high
or low notes, and designers are able to create a distinct tune.
Patent documents for the design describe it as notches(刻痕)"formed in a road surface so as to play
a melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melodylike tones".
      There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan-one of which plays the tune of a
Japanese pop song. Reports say the system was invented by Shizuo Shinoda.He scraped some
markings into a road with a bulldozer(推土機(jī))before driving over them and found that they helped
to produce all kinds of tones.
     The optimal speed for melody road is 44 kph,but people say it is not always easy to get the intended
sound.
      "You need to keep the car windows closed to hear well,"wrote one Japanese blogger."Driving too
fast will sound like playing fast forward, while driving around 12 mph[20 km/h]has a slowmotion effect,
making you almost carsick."

The magician (魔術(shù)師) usually depends on his skill with his hands, and on his knowledge of psychology (心理學(xué)). Since magic tricks are meant to fool people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the movement of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also lead the people to draw false conclusions. The magician’s success depend on the fact that many things seen by the eye do not register (記下) on the mind.

Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear or to disappear. For example, the magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to another or to change color. What actually happens is that the magician, by quick hand movements, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the people and waves a brightly colored cloth with one hand. The people are too busy watching the cloth and listening to the magician’s words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball. 

Another favorite trick is to cut or burn something, and then make it appear again. What actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it while the people watch something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear again by displaying another object that has not been cut or burned.

　　Almost two-thirds of children want their parents to spend more time reading to them before bed, and most prefer Mum's storytelling to Dad's, researchers said．

　　They conducted a study that showed younger children aged 3-4 were most hungry for more stories, with over three-quarters saying they wished their parents read to them more often．

　　The best storytellers were mothers who used funny voices to illustrate different characters or made their own special sound effects to keep the story moving, researchers said．

　　When mum and dad are not at hand, celebrities will do：over 30 percent of children said they would like to hear a bedtime story from Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, with teen idols Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and Emma Watson．

　　"It can be very difficult for parents to find the time to read with their children, but these moments can help build strong bonds and play a vital part in their child's development," said Woolfson．

     Science Daily (Apr. 27, 2008)-- Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and her colleagues have
discovered that subterranean (地下的) and aboveground herbivorous (食草的) insects can
communicate with each other by using plants as telephones.  Subterranean insects issue chemical
warning signals through the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are warned that the
plant is already "occupied".
     Aboveground, leaf-eating insects prefer plants that have not yet been occupied by subterranean
root-eating insects. Subterranean insects send out chemical signals through the leaves of the plant,
which warn the aboveground insects about their presence. This messaging makes it possible for
spatially-separated insects to avoid each other, so that they do not compete for, the same plant.
     In recent years it has been discovered that different types of aboveground insects develop slowly
if they feed on plants that also have subterranean insects and 'vice versa (反之亦然). It seems that a
mechanism (機(jī)制) has developed through natural selection,  which helps the subterranean and
aboveground insects to communicate with each other. This avoids unnecessary competition.
      Through the "green telephone lines", subterranean insects can also communicate with a third party,
namely the natural enemy of caterpillars (毛蟲). Parasitic wasps (寄生蜂) lay their eggs inside above
ground insects. The wasps also benefit from the signals sent by the leaves, as these help them find more
insects for their eggs.
     The communication between subterranean and above- ground insects has only been studied in a
few systems. It is still not clear how widespread this phenomenon is, say the researchers.
