【題目】A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington, DC. I saw many of our nation’s treasures, and I also saw a lot of citizens on the street—unfortunate ones, like beggars and homeless folks.

Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice ask. “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an old blind woman with her hand extended. In a natural reflex (自然反射), I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my loose change and placed it in her hand without even looking at her. I hated being disturbed by a beggar.

But the blind woman smiled and said: “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.” In an instant, I realized what I had done. I had acted with prejudice (偏見)---I had judged another person simply for what I thought she had to be.

I hated what I saw in myself. This incident brought back my central belief. It reminded me that I believed in being humble (卑下的), even though I’d lost that belief for a moment.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant (移民). I left Honduras and arrived in the US at the age of 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother, my sister and a strong mother. Through the years, I have been a dish washer, roofer, mechanic, cashier and pizza delivery driver, among many other humble jobs. Eventually, I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many acts of prejudice. I remember a time at age 17---I was busboy (餐館工), and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. I have also seen the same treatment of family and friends, so I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.

But now, living my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to go. The blind woman cured me of my blindness. She reminded me of my belief in being humble, and to always keep my eyes and heart open.

By the way, I helped that lady to the post office. And in writing this essay, I hope to thank her for the priceless lesson she gave me.

1At the very beginning, the author regarded the old blind woman as .

A. a great teacher B. a poor beggar

C. a humble immigrant D. a passer-by asking for help

2How did the author feel when the old woman asked him for directions?

A. Concerned. B. Confused.

C. Amused. D. Ashamed.

3What is the lesson that the author learned from the old woman?

A. Help but don’t judge. B. Efforts will pay off.

C. Stay humble, stay happy. D. Kindness is well rewarded.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。 Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.
Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar. Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about e ight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than three thousand such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.
But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said, “Year-round schools don't really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”
Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.
But calling them “summer school” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like “summer camp”, “enrichment”, “extra time” and “hands-on learning”.

A.helps children to gain weight
B.leads children to work harder

A.perform better and have more learning gains
B.have much less time for relaxation every year

A.Students from poor families often fall behind after the vacation.
B.Year-round schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.

C.Spreading Year-Round Education
D.Minding the Summer Learning Gap

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。 When a child is told he is “uncool ”, it can be very painful. He may say he doesn’t care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose. But these are simply ways to handle sadness by pretending it’s not there.
Helping a child feel better in school had to be careful. If you say, “Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn’t matter! ”Children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, “I’m going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school. ”
If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child’s popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc. .
There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to have meals and then serve the dishes they consider. When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do is give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build a real friendship of his own.

A.care nothing about it

【題目】I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month.

And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family.

But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.)

My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity.

Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

1The author decided to live a car-free life partly because ________.

A. most families chose to go car-free B. the cost of a new car was too much

C. he was hurt in a terrible car accident D. the traffic jam was unbearable for him

2What is the attitude of the author’s family toward his plan?

A. Disapproving. B. Supportive.

C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned.

3What did the author suggest his daughters do about their friends’ opinion?

A. Argue against it. B. Take their advice.

C. Leave it alone. D. Think it over.

4What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life?

A. Life cannot go without a car.

B. Life without a car is a little bit hard.

C. His life gets improved without a car.

D. A car-free life does not suit everyone.

【題目】Some of those who oppose smoking in movies have just seen the future, and they are not happy about it.

Having caught up with James Cameron’s3-D science fiction thriller, “Avatar,” over the holidays, Stanton A. Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, said his Smoke Free Movies initiative(倡議) would soon come out swinging with an informational campaign aimed at what he saw as the movie’s pro-smoking message.

“This is like someone just put a bunch of plutonium(钚) in the water supply,” Mr. Glantz said in a telephone interview last week. He was referring to scenes in which an environmental scientist played by Sigourney Weaverdrags lovingly on a cigarette as she works to save the moon Pandora sometime in the 22nd century.

Scenesmoking.org, which monitors tobacco mentions in films, gave “Avatar” a rating: A “black lung.” Still, this movie is not the only holiday picture to earn that distinction, which indicates unacceptable depictions(描繪) of tobacco.

“Sherlock Holmes” and “The Blind Side,” which were distributed by Warner Brothers; “Nine,” from the Weinstein Company; “Did You Hear About the Morgans?”from Sony Pictures; and “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” also from Fox, were similarly rated with a “black lung” for tobacco use.

In a statement sent by e-mail over the weekend, Mr. Cameron said he had never intended Ms. Weaver’s character, Grace Augustine, to be “a role model” for teenagers. “She’s rude, she swears, she drinks, she smokes,” wrote Mr. Cameron. “Also, from a character perspective, we were showing that Grace doesn’t care about her human body, only her avatar body, which again is a negative comment about people in our real world living too much in their avatars, meaning online and in video games.”

Speaking as an artist, Mr. Cameron said: “I don’t believe in the dogmatic(教條的) idea that no one in a movie should smoke. Movies should reflect reality…I do agree that young role-model characters should not smoke in movies, especially in a way which suggests that it makes them cooler or more accepted by their peers.”

For the record, apart from the 3-D tobacco use, Mr. Glantz said he found “Avatar” to be “a great movie.”

1What would be the best title for the text?

A. “Avatar” Made by James Cameron Becomes the Latest Hit Again

B. A discussion about the Role-model for Young People

C. ‘Avatar’ Joins Holiday Movies That Fail an Antismoking Test

D. A Campaign against Smoking

2What is Warner Brothers?

A. A rating administration. B. A research center.

C. A film. D. A film company.

3What is the tone of the text?

A. Doubtful. B. Objective C. Subjective. D. Sensitive.
