Birds don't need lessons in building nests. Fish don't need coaching to learn how to swim. All animals
have instincts. They're born with natural abilities to do certain things. Wild animals also learn by copying
their parents and practicing. And pets learn through training.
But instincts and training aren't the only keys to animals' behavior. Scientists say animals' thoughts and
feelings also influence their actions. Animals often make choices, plans, and sensible changes. They can
help others and solve problems. Some even make and use tools!
If animals could talk, what would they say about their thoughts and feelings? A gorilla (大猩猩) born
in captivity (關(guān)在籠子里) has helped answer that question. Koko, a gorilla, was taught to use sign language
(手勢(shì)語(yǔ)). She has learned hundreds of words!
Koko once had a pet cat she named All Ball. "Koko love Ball," she signed. "Soft good cat." One time,
she blamed the cat for biting her by signing "You bad dirty toilet!" When her pet died, Koko cried. "Sad for
sleeping cat," she signed.
Koko calls herself "fine animal gorilla". She uses sign language to argue, joke, and ask and answer
questions.
"Most animals can't use words to tell us their thoughts," says Dr. Jonathan Balcombe. "But Koko shows
us that animals have their own ideas and feelings." Dr. Balcombe is a scientist at the Humane Society of the
United States. He says there's even more to discover about animals through field studies. In field studies,
people watch animals in their natural environment.
"Scientists who study animals' natural behaviors learn how animals live and think," Balcombe says. "That
knowledge can help others respect every animal who shares the planet with us."

The Chinese were the real inventor of printing. Centuries ago they carved messages on a stone
and then sprinkled (撒) sooty(煤炭的) dust over it. When they put a small piece of paper over
the stone and rubbed the paper, the sooty lines were reproduced on it. Some of these first printed
papers have been preserved; the oldest ones known to exist are more than one thousand years old.
Printing with carved stone blocks was the only kind of printing known for centuries. Then, about
eight hundred years ago, a Chinese printer, Bi Sheng, had a clever idea. Instead of carving a whole
message on a single big block of wood or stone, he formed separate Chinese words or characters
out of bits of clay(粘土). By putting the clay pieces together in rows in a box, he could print just as
before. But when he finished, he could keep all the separate pieces of clay and use them again.
Bi Sheng's movable type was a great step forward, but his method was not generally adopted.
Movable type did not come into use in Europe until it was invented there centuries later. The
Europeans had been totally ignorant of the printing traditions of the Chinese.
1. The oldest pieces of printed paper in existence date back ______.
A. 800 years
B. more than 1000 years
C. more than 2000 years
D. 500 years
2. Bi Sheng used clay to form ______.
A. large tablets for writing
B. messages
C. individual words or characters
D. small statues
3. These pieces of clay were ______.
A. easily lost
B. broken
C. reusable
D. disposable

A. realized stone carving was inadequate (不夠的)
B. had learned about it from the Chinese
C. had copied Chinese printing
D. had invented it themselves

As a foreigner, I often hear the Chinese calling me "laowai". If I could not speak Chinese or if I had no
understanding of Asian customs, I might be angry when I am called a "laowai". But having lived in the
Philippines and China's Taiwan Province teaching English for several years, I have come to China with a
different view from most other foreign teachers here. In such situations, I just answer back in standard
Chinese:"Ni zenmo zhidao wo shi waiguoren? (How do you know I'm a foreigner? )" When I hear people
shout out "hello" in a more impolite way and then laugh, I reply in Chinese with "Ni de yingyu bi wo de hao.
(Your English is better than mine.)"
Speaking Chinese is a way of living an easier life in China. As an English teacher at Hubei University in
Wuhan, I was once invited by a student to spend the weekend with his family. Because I can speak Chinese
quite freely, I was able to talk with my student's entire family. From my personal experience, I knew that the
Chinese have a "gift" for making foreigners in China feel right at home. That fun-filled weekend I spent with
my student's family in Caidian, a small suburb of Wuhan, just showed that my idea was right.
It was an experience I will never forget.
Americans have a saying: If you can't beat them, then join them. The secret to feeling at home with the
Chinese people isn't to try to make them change over to Western ways. The secret is to become one of them.
Just go with the flow, or don't take things too seriously. In this way you will surely feel at home in China.
If you no longer emphasize (強(qiáng)調(diào)) our differences from the Chinese, you will be more willing to
concentrate on what "big noses" and "small noses" have in common.
1. Shouting out" hello" to a strange foreigner is usually considered _____ by foreigners.
[     ]
A. friendly
B. curious
C. rude
D. brave
2. The reply "Ni de yingyu bi wo de hao" shows _____.
[     ]
A. the author likes to talk with the Chinese
B. the author isn't angry
C. the author really think so
D. the author likes to speak Chinese
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
[     ]
A. The author has known Chinese customs fairly well.
B. The author can speak Chinese very well.
C. The author doesn't mind being called a "laowai".
D. The author is difficult to get along with.
4. The phrase "go with the flow" here means _____.
[     ]
A. feel at home
B. when in Rome, do as the Romans do
C. flow with the river
D. take things easy
