It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly   36  the great day of gift-giving in advance.
Each day the children produced some new   37  — strings of popcorn, handmade trinkets, and German bell. Through it all she remained alone,   38   from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what   39  happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would   40  her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃彈子)and competed with one anther to bring the   41  ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were   42 . All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she   43 . I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had   44  around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly   45  of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled,   46  it had been held many times by   47 , childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but   48  her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble   49  from a golden chain. Then I looked into that eight-year-old   50  and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew — she had   51  it for her mother, who had died just three weeks before and would never hold her or brush her hair or   52  her childish joys or sorrows.
I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would   53  it.” Neither of us could stop the   54 . She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest   55  of all: her trust and love.

Canadian experts have found that so – called self – help books may actually do more harm than good to people who really need help.Researchers say that individuals (個(gè)人) with low respect felt much worse after repeating positive statements about themselves.
In their study, psychologists Joanne Wood and John Lee sought to determine how positive thinking affected people with different levels of self – confidence. They questioned dozens of people both made and female, analyzed their self – worth and optimism by means of the standard psychological methods and then asked them to write down their thoughts and feelings. The scoring system ranged from 0 to 35.
During the experiment, the researchers asked a total of 68 participants to repeat the self-help book phrase, “I am a lovable person.” After that they measured the participants’ moods and their feelings about themselves. The results revealed that the participants in the low self – respect group who repeated the mantra (頌歌), were feeling much worse afterwards, when compared to other participants in low self – respect group who did not repeat the phrase. Those with low self – respect who repeated the phrase scored an average of 10 points.Their counterparts (對比者) with equally low self – respect who were not asked to repeat the statement, were able to score a little higher average of 17 points.
However, individuals with high self – respect reported feeling better after repeating the positive self – statement – but only slightly. They scored an average of 31 points, compared with an average of 25 for those with equally high self – respect who did not repeat the phrase.
Professor Wood urged those who promote self – help books, magazines and television shows to stop telling people that simply repeating a positive mantra could change one’s life.First, people start following this idea and feel like they are not alone. They are told that all they have to do is just to read that book and then to repeat these positive statements in a hope that things will be better, and when it does not work for them and they realize that nothing gets better, then it is really frustration to people.
Researchers concluded: “Repeating positive self – statements may benefit certain people such as individuals with high self – respect but discourage the very people who need confidence the most.”
小題1:The experts tried to find out, when repeating positive self – statements,
A.the different influences on people with different levels of self - confidence
B.whether males or females will get more benefit from self – help books
C.which group of people self – help books will do the greatest harm to
D.who will get the least benefit from self – help book
小題2:How many points did the low self – respect participants get after repeating the self – help book phrase?
A.An average of 10 points.B.An average of 17 points.
C.An average of 31 points.D.An average of 25 points.
小題3:So – called self – help books do some good to
A.people lacking confidence

C.people with problems to settle urgently
D.people repeating positive self – statements

The next day I sat down, with almost a hundred other candidates, for the intelligence test.I must have done all right because after about half an hour’s wait I was sent into another room for a psychological test. This time there were only about fifty candidates. The interviewer sat at a desk.Candidates were signaled forward to occupy the seat opposite him when the previous occupant had been dismissed, after a greater or shorter time.Obviously the long interviews were the more successful ones. Some of the interviews were as short as five minutes.Mine was the only one that lasted a minute and a half.
I can remember the questions now:“Why did you leave your last job?”“Why did you leave your job before that?”“And the one before that?”I can’t recall my answers, except that they were short at first and grew progressively shorter. His closing statement,I thought, evealed(揭示)a lack of sensitivity which helped to explain why as a psychologist,he had risen no higher than the underground railway.“You’ve failed the psychological test and we are unable to offer you a position.”
Failing to get that job was my low point.Or so I thought, believing that the work was easy.Actually, such jobs—being a postman is another one I still desire—demand exactly the sort of elementary yet responsible awareness that the habitual dreamer is least qualified to give. But I was still far short of full self-understanding.I was also short of cash.

I have to admit: I don’t flush(沖) the toilet every time I go to the bathroom. In fact, I firmly believe “If it’s yellow, let it mellow; if it’s brown, flush it down.”
I’m sure a lot of it has to do with the fact that I work at home. Alone (well, except for the cats and dog). All day. And I drink a lot of water, which makes for many trips to the bathroom.
Another thing I have to admit: I also try to use very little toilet paper. I wash my hands after, though. Every time. (So maybe the water I don’t use flushing makes up for the water used to wash my hands?)
Ironically, my husband, who only uses toilet paper when necessary, always flushes. But he doesn’t seem to mind that I don’t flush every time. Or, at least not enough to file for divorce. Yet.

When I’m at home alone I do not flush every time I pee(小便).  My husband hates that, though, so when he’s home, I flush a little more often.  I grew up doing that because I had a family that lived with huge tanks and you have to do it that way because it’s easier on the system, so it doesn’t bother me.  I do flush when I’m out in public, at people’s houses that don’t have big tanks and when we have company!
CherBearCM, Jun 15, 2010 at 4:21 PM
Not always. But I have 4 children who are always hanging from the door knob(球形捏手) while I pee anyway. So I’m lucky I have time to wash my hands after. The average toilet uses 8 gallons of water per flush! Much less than what it takes to wash my hands after. (just saying)

Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists (靈學(xué)家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a “sixth sense” really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist at the University of Kentucky, performed two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind a two way mirror in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t. and they were no better at telling when they were stared at than if they had just guessed.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said baker, “I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
小題1:The purpose of the two experiments is to                                 .
A.explain when people can have a sixth sense
B.show how people act while being watched in the lab
C.study whether humans can sense when they are stared at
D.prove why humans have a sixth sense
小題2:In the first experiment, the subjects                             .
A.were not told that they would be stared at
B.lost their sense when they were stared at
C.were not sure when the would be stared at
D.were uncomfortable when they were stared at
小題3:What can be learned from the passage?
A.People are born with a sixth sense.

Pressure too much?
In our daily life we are used to hearing these words, “I can't wait for my holiday,” “I wish I could stay home today” And “I'm very tired.” These words come from pressure at work. Now the “iron rice bowl”(鐵飯碗) is being broken into pieces. Workers may be fired if they don’t perform their duties well. They have to do their jobs better.
People feel pressure not only because they might find themselves out of work but also because they get no real pleasure from their work. For most of the workers, work is just a way of earning money. It appears to be meaningless and worthless.
But pressure is a natural part of work. There is no way to keep away from it. We should face up to it.
Work should be a cause of happiness and pride rather than a punishment or a burden .In fact, a certain amount of pressure can provide challenge and chance for learning. To a modern man who is worried and low in spirit, developing a hobby and finding a new interest is of first importance. I like listening to pop music, which makes me calm and gives me pleasure.
If pressure becomes difficult to deal with, we should turn to our friends or families. We can have a drink with our friends and talk about the problem. We should always discuss our problems with our families. Good advice, warmth and happiness that families bring to us can reduce our pressure and encourage us to smooth away all difficulties.
小題1:Peopel feel pressure at work mainly because ______.
A.they will lose their jobs
B.most of them find less interest in their work
C.they can make more money after work.
D.they want to stay at home.
小題2:Which of the following is WRONG in the writer’s opinion?
A.Where there is work there is pressure.
B.Work shouldn’t be regarded as punishment or burden.
C.All modern men are worried and low in spirit.
D.A certain amount of pressure is necessary.
小題3:From the text we can know that when pressure is too big, ________.
A.we should drink coffee with our friends
B.we can get help and comfort from our friends or families.
C.we can go home because it is warm
D.to talk out the problem to our friends and families is the best way.

Freda Bright says, "Only in opera do people die of love." It's true. You really can't love somebody to death. I've known people to die from no love, but I've never known anyone to be loved to death. We just can't love one another enough.
A heart-warming story tells of a woman who finally decided to ask her boss for a raise in salary. All day she felt nervous and apprehensive. Late in the afternoon she summoned the courage to approach her employer. To her delight, the boss agreed to a raise.
The woman arrived home that evening to a beautiful table set with their best dishes. Candles were softly glowing. Her husband had come home early and prepared a festive meal. She wondered if someone from the office had tipped him off, or... did he just somehow know that she would not get turned down?
She found him in the kitchen and told him the good news. They embraced and kissed, and then sat down to the wonderful meal. Next to her plate the woman found a beautifully lettered note. It read, "Congratulations, darling! I knew you'd get the raise! These things will tell you how much I love you."
Following the supper, her husband went into the kitchen to clean up. She noticed that a second card had fallen from his pocket. Picking it off the floor, she read, "Don't worry about not getting the raise! You deserve it anyway! These things will tell you how much I love you."
Someone has said that the measure of love is when you love without measure. What this man feels for his wife is total acceptance and love, whether she succeeds or fails. His love celebrates her victories and cure her wounds. He stands with her, no matter what life throws in their direction.
Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa said, "What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family." And love your friends. Love them without measure.

A.giving love is better than receiving love

C.people are too greedy to have enough love

小題2: From the passage we can infer that ________.
A.the woman must have thought about asking for a salary raise for a long time
B.the boss of the woman must be a kind person
C.the woman was a courageous person
D.the husband must have got the news before his wife got home
小題3:The husband prepared a festive meal in order to _______.

A.loving your family is more important than promoting world peace
B.loving your friends is to promote the world peace
C.everybody can promote the world peace by loving his own family without measure
D.no matter what life throws in our direction, our family is always our first concern

Certainly people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you’ve known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills (技巧) that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they will help you put people at ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy they are, will answer a question. One well-known businessman says. “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did this morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters sometimes to really personal questions. And how they answer will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions they listen for the answer. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively (專心地).
Real listening means certain things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation (對話). If someone sticks to (堅(jiān)持) one topic (話題), you can take it as a fact that he’ll be really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones (語調(diào)) of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it’s time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion (場合) of parting. If you’re saying goodbye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their life.
64. You’ll like to stay with certain people because ________.
A. they know how to get along with others
B. you can often get much help from them
C. they are always glad to do anything for you
D. they will never get you into trouble
65. Asking questions might be quite a good way ________.
A. for you to make more and more new friends
B. to begin your business talks
C. to get the conversation going well
D. for you to make a deep and lasting impression (印象) on others
66. After having asked somebody a question, it’ll be polite of you to ________.
A. make clear what kink of person he is
B. listen to his answer attentively
C. wait quietly and patiently for his answer
D. talk with others
67. Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who ________.
A. are good at making any topic interesting
B. never talk too much or too little
C. always speak in a gentle way
D. know how and when they should change the topic of the talk
