Dear Mrs Winthorp,

So my first week at college is over! No lectures this morning so I think I’d email you and let you know what things are going.

I’m glad to say that anything has worked out fine in the dorm. I remember asking for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they find me a comfortable one second floor. There are two girls from my course here and I plan to make friend with them so they we can help each other on the course work. Everyone else seems very nice and warmly here.

Well, I had better to stop now. I’m going to attend mine first lesson this aftemoon, for I’ve got some preparation to make, Keep in touch.

Best,

Carol

Tell the Truth

Miss Enderby, the headmistress, stopped Anna one day in the passage(走廊).

“Now,”she said,“I want you to tell me the truth, my dear.”“Naturally,”said Anna shortly, fearing something terrible had happened. What on earth had she done? Could that light pat(輕拍) on the side of Betty head have made her seriously ill? Had that tablet(藥片)given to Johnny for his headache yesterday caused his death during the night?

Miss Enderby explained before Anna could think of further worrying possibilities.

“I have had a most serious accusation(遣責、非難) made against you by Mrs Bond.”

“Mrs Bond?”repeated Anna, not understanding. Janet Bond was a quiet little mother of a child. As far as Anna could remember she had never had caused to say an angry word to the girl.

“Mrs Bond,”went on Miss Enderby seriously,“tell me that you swore(咒罵) at her daughter yesterday afternoon.”

“Swore?”cried Anna heatedly.“I don't swear. At least not in school,”she added honestly.

“But never, never at Janet Bond. There's never been any need.”

“Mrs Bond's story is that Janet was a little late back to school in the afternoon According to her, the child had to spend some time in the W.C, which meant she set out from home a little late.”

“Just a minute,”said Anna, beginning to understand.“she did come late, very late. I'd called the roll and marked her absence, of course. Then she wandered in , when we'd started our papercutting , and I believe I said she was a nuisance(討厭的家伙). She didn't appear to hear, and was certainly quite unmoved and cheerful.”

“Ah, a nuisance.”Miss Enderby jumped on the word.“Yor're sure you only said a nuisance?”

“Mrs Bond said that you called her child‘blasted(該死的) nuisance’. Is that true?”

“Indeed it isn't.”said Anna,“The childor the motherhas made it up!”

Miss Enderby's face softened and she patted Anna's shoulder.

“As I doubted, my dear, but of course I had to make sure.”

A Letter to the Editor(編輯)

  13 October

  Dear Editor,

I am writing to ask what has happened to our youth. They are not as polite, hardworking or clever as my generation. I'll give you an example.

Last Friday, I got on the underground at 9:15 a. m..It was very busy so there were no free seats. There were some teenagers(青少年) sitting on the seats nearest me. I don't know why they were not at school. They were talking loudly and laughing. It was difficult to read my newspaper with all the noise. A heavily pregnant(懷孕) woman and her daughter got on at the next stop, with lots of shopping bags. I expected the teenagers to let them sit down. They slowly did so but gave me a rude look. I got off at the next stop and was glad that the teenagers didn't follow me.

I worried about the future of our country. How could these young people become responsible(負責的) workers and parents? They sit around McDonald's after school instead of going to the library like I did at their age. Maybe they have too much money. Perhaps another reader can give us an idea about what to do with this “l(fā)ost generation”(垮掉的一代).

  Franz Johnson.

Reply to Mr. Johnson's Letter

  20 October

  Dear Editor,

I read Mr. Johnson's letter about the problems of today's youth with much interest. He described teenagers on a train not giving a seat to a pregnant woman and her daughter. I was the woman. We must have seen things differently. I found the teenagers helpful and kind. Did Mr. Johnson see the teenagers help me off the train? Did he see them carry my shopping bags to a taxi for me? Did he see them friendly to my daughter? Obviously(顯然地) not.

“Older” people often say today's youth isn't as good as their generation. Their parents said that about them. Mr. Johnson must accept that the world is changing and young people change with it. I find today's youth mostly kind and more fun than my generation.

Perhaps Mr. Johnson should really try to get to know some young people before he calls them the “l(fā)ost generation”.

b) Mrs. Black got on the train with her daughter.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)sk for help from the newspaper

[ ]

A.told another story to support Mr. Johnson
