Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback. Simply speaking, it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.

Most American schools follow a traditional nine-month calendar with winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a year-round calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. The National Association for Year-Round Education says there were fewer than 3,000 such schools at last count. They were spread among forty-six of the fifty states.

But many experts point out that the number of class days in a year-round school is generally the same as in a traditional school. Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said, “Year-round schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year.”

Across the country, research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer than other students. Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer programs that can help.

But calling them “summer school” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins, Ron Fairchild, said research with groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term “summer school”. In American culture, the idea of summer vacation is connected to beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. The parents welcomed other terms like “summer camp”, “extra time” and “hands-on learning”.

1. According to the first paragraph, the summer learning gap _____.

A. helps children to gain weight

B. leads children to work harder

C. improves children’s memories

D. affects children’s regular studies

2. Compared to traditional schools, students in the year-round ones _____.

A. perform better and have more learning gains

B. have much less time for relaxation every year

C. have generally the same number of class days

D. hold more classes with more free weeks off

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Students from poor families often fall behind after the vocation.

B. Year-round schools can solve the problem of the learning gap.

C. There are schools in each state following a year-round calendar.

D. Nothing can help the students who fall behind after the vocation.

4. Why did almost all parents dislike the term “summer school”?

A. Because they cherish the children’s rights of freedom very much.

B. Because they are worried about the quality of the “summer school”.

C. Because they want their children to be forced to make up the gap.

D. Because they couldn’t afford to the further study during the vacation.

IMAGINE that you are in school, giving a speech to your class.

Now think what it feels like when stammering(口吃)makes it a struggle to communicate your thoughts and feelings to other people.

The King’s Speech, which won the best picture at

the Academy Awards, highlights(突出) stammering along with other speech-related problems. The movie tells the story of Britain’s King George Ⅵ, who became king after his brother Edward Ⅷ gave up the crown to marry an American woman.

As a result of British actor Colin Firth’s performance, people are starting to realize that stammering can damage a person’s self-confidence and cause him/her to escape from life.

“The problem is unseen and unheard,” said Norbert Lieckfeldt, an expert at the British Stammering Association, in an interview with The Guardian newspaper.

“Stammering masks(遮蓋) your ability,” he said, “It's a serious disability(殘疾).”

Most stammerers face bullying(欺負(fù)) in school, something that is “usually carried over into the workplace”.

George Ⅵ’s stammer took away his confidence as a speaker. But Samantha Mesango, a speech coach based in the UK, believes that speech problems are more common than most people realize. “Some simply don't like the sound of their own voice; others are scared of speaking in public,” she said.

Travis Treats from Saint Louis University’s department of communication sciences in the US, praised The King’s Speech. He said it shows that “how one’s speech does not mean what one is inside”.

He also added that people who stammer need to be heard and our society should recognize that they have a lot to give to the world.

1. What is the point of the first two paragraphs?

A. To tell readers about speech speaking.

B. To show how harmful a stammer is.

C. To draw the attention of readers to the problem of a stammer.

D. To show how a stammer makes a person popular

2. According to the article, King George Ⅵ _____.

A. was a hero during World War Ⅱ

B. took the place of his brother

C. married a divorced American woman

D. was a failure because of his stammer

3. What is Norbert Lieckfeldt’s view of the challenge of a stammer?

A. A stammer can destroy a person’s self-confidence.

B. A stammer is a serious problem for many people but it is often ignored.

C. People who stammer need to have their own voice.

D. People who stammer do better in work than in school.

Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.

The best way to get rid of a negative serf-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat (拍) yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

1. You need to build a positive self-image when you _____.

A. dare to challenge yourself

B. feel it hard to change yourself

C. are unconfident about yourself

D. have a high opinion of yourself

2. How should you change your serf-image according to the passage?

A. To keep a different image of others.

B. To make your life successful.

C. To understand your own world.

D. To change the way you think.

3. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to prepare for your success.

B. How to face challenges in your life.

C. How to build a positive self-image.

D. How to develop your good qualities.

Scott Langteau has this message for kids:Spend less time playing video games.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health)—Kids who eat better perform better in school, a new study of Nova Scotia fifth?graders confirms.

Students who ate an adequate amount of fruit, vegetables, protein, fiber and other components of a healthy diet were significantly less likely to fail a literacy test,Dr.Paul J.Veugelers of the University of Alberta in Edmonton and colleagues found.

While a healthy diet is generally assumed to be important for good school performance, there has actually been little research on this topic, Veugelers and his colleagues note.To investigate, they looked at 4, 589 fifth?graders participating in the Children's Lifestyle and School?performance Study, 875 (19.1 percent) of whom had failed an elementary literacy assessment.

The better a student's eating habits based on several measures of diet quality, including adequacy and variety, the less likely he or she was to have failed the test, the researchers found, even after they adjusted the data for the effects of parental income and education, school and sex.Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, and getting fewer calories from fat, was also associated with a lower risk of failing the test.

To date, Veugelers and his team say, most research on diet and school performance has focused on the importance of eating breakfast, as well as the ill effects of hunger and malnutrition(營養(yǎng)不良).

“This study extends current knowledge in this area by demonstrating the independent importance of overall diet quality to academic performance. We should not only realize the importance of children's nutrition at breakfast but also that throughout the day,” the researchers conclude.

Another research from the UK is suggesting that children's diets in the pre?school years affects how they perform at school later on.The researchers from the Institute of Education, at the University of London say in fact that what children were eating in those days before primary school has more of an effect than the chicken nuggets(塊) they ate at lunchtime. The researchers say they have found that children who ate a diet of “junk food” at the age of three, made less progress in school between the ages of six and ten. They say children's diet at later ages appears to have less impact on their school attainment.

1..According to Dr.Paul J.Veugelers, students who have a healthy diet________.

A.a(chǎn)re more likely to fail in their school performance

B.definitely can perform better in their school work

C.usually have more of fat and less of fruit and vegetables

D.tend to perform better in their school work

2..It can be implied from the passage that________.

A.little research has been done on the importance of breakfast

B.most students participating in the research failed the test

C.the adequacy and variety of foods can mean better school performance

D.eating more chicken nuggets leads to good school performance

3..The underlined word “l(fā)iteracy” (in Para.2) probably refers to ________.

A.the ability to read and write

B.a(chǎn) guessing game

C.the art of painting

D.the ability to handle practical task

4..Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Children should have more“junk food”at lunch time.

B.Pre?school diets can have more impact on children's school work.

C.A child who often has“junk food”at 3 is bound to fail in school work.

D.The older a child is,the more impact of what he eats has on school work.
