Wings of Angel
I used to hate myself because I wasn’t “normal”. Everyone else could play on the monkey bars and ride on a bicycle, but not   37 . I had a severe spinal cord disorder (脊髓病) and I knew I would always be much   38  than others.
I hated going to school and I hated people   39  at me. I hated seeing others smiling broadly and standing straight and tall. And most of all, I hated looking in the   40  and seeing an ugly hunchback (駝背).

I raised my head and there she was, with an irresistible smile on her round face.

“Ants.”
“What are they doing?”
“No idea.”
“I bet they’re playing games and making friends. Don’t you think so?”
That was how our   44  started and it didn’t stop. We talked about everything under the sun—the ants, the clouds, my situation — until it was sunset.
Then suddenly, she saw my   45 . She just stared.
My heart sank. What I feared most had happened and I knew for sure she would  46  me now.
She stood up, pointed at my back and said, “I know   47  your back is hunched.”
I closed my eyes like a criminal waiting to be sentenced(審判). I begged in my heart for

“No,” I answered weakly.
She bent and   49  my ears.
“Your back is hunched because you’ve got a pair of wings from the angels.”
I was    50   .I looked into her eyes and her kindness touched my heart. From that day on, I started to learn to   51   myself because I have the wings of an angel and a kind-hearted friend.

It was blazing hot, just like most July days. I stepped into a tiny ice-cream shop to cool off with a
chocolate ice-cream. It was an old woman bent over a table near the door. Her back was so badly twisted that her face nearly touched the tabletop. I sat down facing her a couple of tables away.
“Poor woman,” I thought, “What does she get out of life? Why God let people live so long past their prime?”
As I thought, another aged lady entered the shop and sat down with her. Soon the two of them were talking about childhood days. They talked of how little the shop had changed in 70 years... In minutes, the two of them were trembling with laughter.
I looked again at the first woman, then in the mirror on a nearby wall, catching a picture of myself. I was wearing a dirty shirt. She was well dressed in white, her hands sparking with gold rings. I was sad. She was laughing, smiling. I was putting the pieces of my life together. She had millions of wonderful memories to recall. I sat alone. She was sharing the day with a good friend. I was secretly worried about getting old. She was old, but it wasn’t hurting her.
As I left the shop, I thought of my foolish question about God letting people live past their prime. Why, that woman was more alive, more sensitive to life than I was. Age has not bent her spirit.

When I was 17, I read a quote: “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made a(n)   36  on me,and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the   37  day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to   38  something.
Remembering that I’ll be   39  soon is the most important tool to help me make the big choices in life,   40   almost everything—all expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—just falls away in the face of death,   41  only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to   42 . You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its _______ too.
One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and  the air is so  that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment(娛樂活動(dòng)). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising --- and , what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is , when you are in your teens(十幾歲)or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone as a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose wish is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S, Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had no hope at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
小題1:The writer wrote the passage to ________.
A.warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience
B.a(chǎn)dvise young people to give up their ideas of becoming a professional writer
C.show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to dream of wealth and fame
D.encourage young people to gain a writing career
小題2:What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Real writers often find their works interesting and rewarding.
B.A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.
C.Famous writers usually live in poverty and loneliness.
D.The chances for a writer to become successful are small.
小題3:The underlined part “people who die wondering. What if?” refers to “those _______.”
A.who think too much of the dark side of life
B.who regret giving up their careers halfway
C.who think a lot without making a decision
D.who are full of imaginations even upon death
小題4:What is the best title of the passage?
A.how to be a writerB.how to earn fame
C.how to write wellD.how to keep dreaming

Question: I have a one-year-old female bulldog, who has recently taken to biting my shoes when we are in the park and I’m on the mobile. She can be slightly aggressive and I’m starting to get worried and a bit annoyed. How do I stop her? ----Susan, London.
Answer: You need to get this problem under control before it could escalate (惡化). I always advise owners not to talk on the mobile phone when they go for a walk with their dogs, because they should be focusing on this time with their pets, but I know people have busy lives and need to make phone calls.
The behavior she is showing is either controlling or playfulness, but they both result from the same issue ---- you are not paying attention to her. If you must make phone calls while on a walk, try to still engage with your dog by speaking towards her, playing some sorts of game and so on. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to try more of a training approach.
You will need a training line and some treats. Start your walk in the usual way, make a phone call, and when your dog starts displaying the undesired behavior, simply stop walking --- otherwise she will see it as a game. When she is calm and looking at you, or if she sits, give her a treat; then continue walking. If she starts up again, pick up the lead, gently pull it, and tell her “no”.  Then ask her to sit and give her a treat if she does.
The aim of this is to try to get her to forget how much fun it is biting your shoes. Do little sessions every day --- and try not to answer the phone if you know it’s going to be a long conversation. Be patient and good luck!
Remember that if an animal shows signs of distress or discomfort, an early visit to the vet is always recommended.
小題1:What is Susan complaining about in her question?
A.She doesn’t know how to make phone calls while walking a dog.

“I didn't hear them call my name," explained Shelley Hennig to Active Teens (AT) as she talked about that exciting moment on national television when she won the honor of Miss Teen USA 2004. "Are you ready?" is what she heard. Then she said, "I shook my head no, and then they said 'yes' and it was announced again."
It was four days after that life changing moment for the seventeen-year-old high school student from Destrehan, Louisiana -- she was still on cloud nine.
"I was so shocked! I never believed that it could actually really happen." Present in the audience (觀眾) that day were: her mother and father, older brother, her friends, and her dance teacher.
Understanding why members of her family and her friends would be there, AT asked why her dance teacher had traveled so far to see her compete (比賽). "She's always been my role model. I've danced with her since I was six. She's been through so many difficulties and came through them all. I've learned to get over bad life's experiences and learned how to move on because of her."

As Miss Louisiana Teen, she traveled around the state speaking to teens (青少年) about the dangers of drinking and driving. In her role as Miss Teen USA, Shelley will continue to speak to youth about safe driving, in addition to many other things to help the youth.
When AT asked Miss Teen USA if she had any advice for our readers, she said, "Don't let anyone change you. Hang out with people that make you feel good about yourself. That way, it is easy to be yourself."
