1.At first sight the planet Mars(火星)does not appear very welcoming to any kind of life.It has very little oxygen and water,the temperature at night is below 50degrees and winds of 100miles (161kilometers)per hour cause severe dust storms.However,the surface of the planet seems to show that water flowed across it at some time in the past,and it is believed that there would be enough ice at the poles to cover the planet with water if it melted.Although there is no life on the Mars now,some scientists think there may have been some form of life a long time ago.At that time,the planet had active volcanoes(火山); the atmosphere was thicker and warmer; and there was water.In fact,in some ways the Mars may have been similar to the Earth,where life exists.
Some people believe that the Mars could support life in the future if the right conditions were produced.The first step would be to warm the planet using certain gases which trap the Sun's heat in the planet's atmosphere.With warmth,water and carbon dioxide(二氧化碳),simple plants could begin to grow.These plants could slowly make the Mars fit to live on.It is judged that the whole process might take between 100,000and 200,000years.In the meantime,people could begin to live on the planet in a special closed environment.They would provide a lot of useful information about conditions on Mars and the problems connected with living there.

33.According to the passage,the planet Mars has noAon it.
A.a(chǎn)nimals
B.mountains
C.dust
D.winds
34.What is the topic of Paragraph 2?C
A.Certain gases should be used to warm Mars.
B.Plants should be grown to make Mars fit to live on.
C.Mars could support life with right conditions in the future.
D.People could live on Mars in a special closed environment.
35.The most suitable title for the passage isD.
A.No Life on Mars
B.A Study of Mars
C.The Future conditions on Mars
D.The Possibility of Life on Mars.

12.ottled water has become the choice for people who are healthy and thirsty.Bottled water is all over the world.But some say the planet's health,and people's health may be suffering from it.
The idea that bottled water is safer for humans may not be true.The Natural Resources Defense Council of America said,"There is no promise that because water comes out of a bottle,it is cleaner or safer than water from the tap."Another New York City-based action group added that some bottled water is"really just tap water in a bottle-sometimes more clean,sometimes not."
It is not proven that bottled water is better than tap water.Nick Reeves from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management said,"The high mineral content(含量) of some bottled water makes them not good for feeding babies and young children."Also,most bottled water doesn't have fluoride(氟化物),which can make teeth stronger.Kids are drinking more bottled water and less fluoridated tap water,and some say that's behind the recent rise in bad teeth.
Storing is another problem.Placed near heat,the plastic bottles can produce bad chemicals(化學(xué)物質(zhì)) into the water.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency,some 2.7million tons of plastic are used worldwide to bottle water each year.The plastic can take between 400and 1,000years to break down.
In terms of energy use,plastic bottles are also not cheap.One report said that if water and soft drink bottlers had used 10percent recycled materials in their plastic bottles,they would have saved about 72million gallons of gas.
So,if you are worried about the effect of bottled water on the Earth, you can take the following steps.
●Drink from your tap.Unless your government warns against this,it should be fine.
●Get a container(容器).Carry your tap water in a steel or a lined drinking container,and clean it between uses.
●Keep it cool.Don't drink from a bottle that has been sitting in the sun,don't store it near chemicals,and don't reuse plastic bottles.
●Choose glass containers over plastic if possible. When finished, recycle!

67.What is the main idea of the article?D
A.Drinking tap water is the only choice for people.
B.Glass containers are better than plastic bottles.
C.Plastic bottles are harmful to the environment.

9.Let's face it.No one drinks diet sodas for the taste.People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it.Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect,according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas."What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank,the more weight they were likely to gain,"said Sharon Fowler.
The study was based on data from 474participants in a large,ongoing research project,where the participants were followed for nearly 10years.
While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.
Nutrition expert,Melanie Rogers,who works with overweight patients in New York,has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas,they don't lose weight at all."We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily,and that was confusing to us,"said Rogers.
So why would diet soda cause weight gain?No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas,and so over-compensate for the missing calories.
A related study found some sweeteners (甜味劑)raised blood sugar levels in some mice."Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,"said Helen P.Hazuda,professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas."They may be free of calories,but not of consequences."

D.most blood diseases come from diet sodas
27.The underlined word"They"in the last paragraph probably refers to"B".
A.sweeteners
B.diet sodas and artificial sweeteners

The implication (含義) of saying"You are the prettiest girl in class,"or talking about the goals she scored but not her overall effort,is that you love her only when she looks the best,scores the highest,achieves the most.And this carries over to the classroom.
Social psychologist Carol Dweck,PhD,tested the effects of overpraise on 400fifth graders while she was at Columbia University.She found that kids praised for"trying hard"did better on tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than those praised for being"smart".
"Praising attributes (品質(zhì)) or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality,and it devalues effort,so children are afraid to take on challenges,"says Dweck,now at Stanford University."They figure they'd better quit while they're ahead."

10.The Friday after the American holiday of Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. It's said that it's the day that store ledgers(分類賬)move into the black and companies become profitable. On that day, retailers slash(砍) prices to get consumers to buy.It is also a time when many Americans start their Christmas shopping.VOA's Elizabeth Lee tells us how the economy may affect consumers on that bargain day.
This day should be a shopper's dream."It's just the deals, the sales and everything you can get for a lesser price,"said Sandy Thomas,a shopper. But it's a nightmare for others."I think it's crazy.I've done all of my shopping throughout the week so I don't have to go out on Friday,"she said. It's called Black Friday, the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season in the United States.Every year it's the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.Stores open before sunrise and there are deep discounts everywhere you look.
Last year a crowd of bargain-hunters killed a Wal-mart worker in a New York suburb. This year, many stores are increasing security while they slash prices."This is a huge time for the retail stores,"said Fred Joutz from George Washington University."This is when they begin making their profits for the year."
Economics professor Fred Joutz says how Americans spend the weekend after Thanksgiving is a good indication of how consumers feel about the future.
With the unemployment rate above 10 percent,Joutz says Americans are saving more and spending less. Some retailers are attracting consumers by opening on Thanksgiving Day,when shops are traditionally closed.Other stores open their doors anywhere from midnight to four in the morning.
And shoppers will be lining up in front of the doors in order to be one of the first ones to walk through and get a big discount.Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually the first items to go.Sandy Thomas says it's an annual family tradition and well worth it."I just save maybe half of what I would have spent on a regular, you know, shopping trip,"she said.
Economists say U.S.consumers will spend money this Black Friday, but they will spend it more carefully.

73.From the passage we know thatA.
A.Christmas shopping is traditional time and this year it is no exception.
B.Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually least discounted.
C.The economy only affects consumers on that bargain day.
D.Thanksgiving is a good indication of how consumers feel about the future.

11.The UK government is considering removing"Best Before"dates on food packaging in the country,in order to prevent throwing away of million tons of eatable produce worth£6bn each year.
According to the Waste and Resources Action Program,British families throw away 8.3million tons of food and drink a year,while most of it ends up in garbage sites.It is reported that more than 5million tons of the thrown-away food still remains eatable.
"Best Before"(BB) is not the same as"Use By"(UB).BB is about quality not safety.UB is the key date in terms of safety."Best Before"indicates the date before which a product provides the most satisfying experience for the consumer.It's safe to eat,but it just won't be at their best.By contrast,"UB"dates show when food is no longer safe and should be thrown away.One exception is eggs,which should not be eaten after their"BB"dates because they can contain salmonella bacteria,which could multiply.By law,pre-packed food must show a"BB"date.
The government will set down new policies that will provide better information for shoppers and stop them from throwing away food before it is even opened.Under the new policies,sellers will have to produce labels (標(biāo)簽) that will give accurate information of the health risks associated with foods that remain on shelves,or in the fridge for a certain period before being eaten.Seafood and eggs,for example,would be more likely to carry warnings of potential risks of food poisoning if they were eaten after a certain date.Bread,however,where risks would be smallest,would carry much simpler labels.
In order to reduce food waste,scientists at Strathclyde University are developing a plastic packaging,which will be on the shelves within two years.The advanced packaging can tell when meat,fish or salad leaves have passed their UB dates or have been left out of the fridge for too long.
