Letting go of success
I want to make the most of every day. And, like most people, I've____ that the best way to do it is to let go of past failures. But that's not all. One can never fully ____ today while thinking too much about past successes, either. People never ____ while resting comfortably on their laurels (榮譽). The ___ is that sometimes our successes hold us back more than our failures!
I once ____ a story about the Oscar owner, actor Clark Gable. A friend ____ Gable one afternoon at the actor's home. She brought along her ____ son, who was playing happily with toy cars on the floor. He____ he was racing those cars around a great track, which in ____ was an imaginary circle around a golden statue (雕像). The small statue the boy played with was actually the Oscar Clark Gable ____ for his performance in the 1934 movie It Happened One Night.
When his mother told him the time had come to ____, the little boy asked the actor, “Can I have this?” ____ to the Oscar.
“Sure, ” he smiled. “It's yours.”
The horrified mother ____. “Put that back immediately!”
Giving the child the golden statue, Clark Gable said, “Having the Oscar around doesn't mean anything to me;   ____it does.” The actor seemed to know that past success could be a ____ hammock (吊床) upon which he may be tempted to____, rather than a springboard setting him to begin a new start.
You may have learned to let go of past ____ and mistakes in order to free the present. But will you forget past successes and achievements in order to free the ____? Will your past be a springboard or a restful hammock?
“I like the ____ of the future better than the history of the past,” said Thomas Jefferson. I ____. After all, the future, not the past, is where the rest of your life will be lived.

One of the world’s richest men has taken a close interest in one of man’s most basic functions:visiting the toilet.Bill Gates’s charitable organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,is looking for inventors to design the loo of the future, which, they hope, would improve sanitation for millions of people around the world.
So,what’s wrong with the traditional flush toilet?Firstly,it wastes a huge amount of potential drinking water.Secondly, they are more likely to cause pollution. This is a real problem in many areas of the developing world, where, according to United Nations estimates, unsafe sanitation causes half of all hospitalizations.Younger people are particularly at risk.Illnesses which cause diarrhea are responsible for the deaths of about 1.5 million children a year. Finally, standard lavatories simply aren’t practical in remote areas.
The challenge set by Bill Gates was to come up with a latrine which works without running water, electricity or aseptic tank.It also needed to operate for less than 5 cents.28 designs were displayed at the recent Reinvent the Toilet Fair,in Seattle,USA.Among them was one which turned human waste into electricity using microwaves, another which converted human waste into charcoal, and yet another which used urine for flushing.
But the winner was a solarpowered design which generated hydrogen gas and electricity. The team from the California Institute of Technology(CIT) picked up a prize of $100,000.
But clearly Bill Gates doesn’t feel he’s flushing money down the toilet. After the Seattle event he said,“We couldn’t be happier with the response we’ve gotten.” Gates has even pledged $370 million more to the future toilet project. They hope to field test more prototypes over the next three years.
小題1:Why is Bill Gates paying people to invent new toilets?

This was my grandmother's first Christmas without grandfather, and before he passed away we had promised grandfather that we would make this her best Christmas ever. When my parents and I             at her house, we found she had waited up all night for us. The house did seem a little           without grandfather.
Grandfather had always said that the Christmas           was the most important decoration of all. So we immediately set to work on the beautiful artificial tree that was stored in grandfather's closet (壁櫥). Through our efforts, we finally stepped back to             our handiwork. It looked beautiful.           something was missing.
"Where' s your star?" I asked.
The star was my grandmother' s favorite part of the tree.
"Why, it           be here somewhere," she said, starting to sort through the boxes again. "Your grandfather always           everything so carefully when he took the tree down."
As we emptied the boxes and          no star, my grandmother's eyes filled with tears. Grandfather had given it to grandmother some fifty years ago on their first Christmas together. It brought them great happiness. Now, on her first Christmas without him, the star was          , too.
"Don' t worry, Grandmother," I           her. "We'll find it for you."
My mother and I formed a search          . "Let' s start in on the closet where the ornaments (裝飾品) were," Mother said. "Maybe the star just fell out of the box. "
That sounded         , so I began to search the closet. I thought I tried every        , but no star. I could see grandmother was          , although she tried not to show it.
"What's in this wrapped box?" Mother suddenly called out. "It was at the bottom of father's closet. "
Grandmother took the box in           and opened it. Her face           when she unfolded the paper and pulled out a golden star. There was a(n)           attached.
Don' t be angry with me, dear. I broke your star while packing the decorations, and I couldn't           to tell you. Thought it was time for a new one. I hope it brings you as much         as the first one. Merry Christmas!
Love,
Bryant
So grandmother's tree had a star after all, a star that expressed their everlasting love for one another. And we were glad we were able to make this Christmas           for her.

When Jean Calment entered the world in 1875, telephones and automobiles still lay in the future. Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso were not yet born. The Eiffel Tower was 14 years from being built. As a teenager, she met Vincent Van Gogh, near her home in Arles, in the south of France. He was “very ugly, ungracious, impolite, sick—I forgive him, they called him loco.” She recalled. When she died last week at age 122, she was the world’s oldest person. (There were others who claimed to the title, but only Calment had the official documents to prove her age)
Each February 21, her birthday, she would share the secrets of long life. Some years it was “a sense of humor”, others it was “keeping busy”. “God may have forgotten me,” she once explained. The truth probably was that she had good genes. Her mother reportedly lived to be 86 and her father 94.
Her life had its sadness: she outlived her husband, her only daughter and her grandson. According to a friend, she was imperturbable. “If you can’t do anything about it,” she reportedly said, “don’t worry about it.”
In her last years she was nearly blind and deaf, but her health remained good. She ate a few bars of chocolate each week and continued smoking until a few years ago, when she could no longer light her own cigarettes. She never lost her sense of humor. On her 110th birthday, she commented, “I have only ever had one wrinkle, and I am sitting on it.” Her longevity made her famous. Her spirits made her eternal(永恒的)

Several years ago, while attending a communication course, I experienced a most unusual process. The instructor asked us to list      in our past that we felt      of, regretted, or incomplete about and read our lists aloud.
This seemed like a very  38  process, but there’ s always some     soul in the crowd who will volunteer. The instructor then      that we find ways to      people, or take some action to right any wrong doings. I was seriously wondering how this could ever      my communication.

He looked around and said, “If I'm blindfolded(蒙著眼睛的) with my hands tied, do you ____ believe I can go past?”
This time, the people said without ____, “We believe you!”
In this way, his eyes were ____ with a black cloth. He moved slowly to the tightrope and walked along it inch by inch. This time, he went past once again. The audience burst into ____.
Then, he ____ a child and asked all the people, “If I put him on my shoulders ___ I'm blindfolded with my hands tied as well, do you still believe I can make it?”
All the people replied before ____, “We believe you!”
“I ask you again. Do you really believe me?”
“Yes, we believe you completely!”
Then, he said, “Well then, since you believe me, ____ my child with yours. Who will?”
All of a sudden, the audience fell ____. The silence lasted for nearly ten minutes.
After ten minutes, the acrobatic master said nothing, just put the child on his shoulders and walked past along the tightrope. Sure enough, this time he ____ once more.
