It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech,
every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, the moments are
usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say.
They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order
of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such
moments occur, don't worry about them, just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don't really matter. If you have ever listened
to Martin Luther King's famous speech -"I have a dream", you may notice that he stumbles (結(jié)巴) his words
twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don't remember. Why? Because you were fixing your
attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in
a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication.
They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking
for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that express the speaker's ideas clearly
and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speakers' attractiveness by making him more
human.
As you work on your speech, don't worry about being imperfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will
find it much easier to give your speech freely.
1. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will _____.
[     ]
A. be smarter than you
B. notice your mistakes
C. do better than you
D. know what you are talking about
2. You don't remember obvious mistakes in a speech because _____.
[     ]
A. your attention is on the content
B. you don't fully understand the speech
C. you don't know what the speaker plans to say
D. you find the way of speech-making more important
3. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
[     ]
A. giving a speech is like giving a performance
B. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
4. What would be the best title of the passage?
[     ]
A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B. How to Make a Perfect Speech
C. Don't Expect a Perfect Speech
D. Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech
5. Which of the following statements is true?
[     ]
A. If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech.
B. Speech-making is a kind of performance.
C. Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message.
D. Martin Luther King is not a good speaker.

Teenagers Talking About "Being a Teenager"
Being a teenager is a strange and yet exciting part of life. We are faced with tough and important decisions
each and every day-decisions that will affect our lives.
                                                                                                                                                 -Katie
Being a teenager is hard. I was such a cheerful kid with a best friend and lots of good friends. I got good
marks and I was happy with my family. But since I became a teenager, things changed. Everything changed-
my family, my friends, and my grades. In fact, my whole life changed. I started worrying about my figure and
the way I looked. I started getting pimples (粉刺) all over my face. I think teenage life is harder for girls than
for boys.
                                                                                                                                                 -Julia
Teenage years are a time when the single decision of right and wrong is based on what we see and hear.
Peer (同伴) pressure is more and more serious, and the need to "fit in" ( 順應(yīng),適合) sometimes is more
important than"right" decisions.
                                                                                                                                                 -Ashley
Me? I have so much pressure (壓力)! Being the only child in the family, my parents say that my future is
the future of the family! My parents, who both have not gone to university, put all their efforts into me, hoping
I can bring honor to the family. I really don't want to let my parents down, and I'll study harder and try my
best to get into university.
                                                                                                                                              -Chen Mei
Though teenagers face many difficulties, I believe that we can all enjoy our time as "young adults"
somewhere in between the tears and the anger. Just think… ten years from now when you throw your back
out and start balding (禿頂), all you'll be saying to yourself is "What I wouldn't give to be seventeen again!"
                                                                                                                                                -Kathy
1. _____ thinks that teenage life is harder for girls than for boys.

A. her neighbors
B. her teachers

A. should do just like adults
B. should enjoy their teenage time

Although there are no state controlled survival courses in Britain or the United States, there are various
independent organizations offering similar activities.
Students can participate (take part) in outdoor training courses through university clubs and societies.
Anyone can register (登記) with such groups, which then organize courses, training and trips for all
members.
One of the most popular outdoor training programmes in both the US and Britain, is Outward Bound
(戶外訓(xùn)練). It was founded in 1941 in Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurous types
every year.
The courses are to broaden minds through experiences that build confidence, self-esteem (自尊) and
character. As well as specialist courses such as canoeing, leadership skills and sailing, participants can take
part in week long adventure training camps which include a host of sports and survival training education
skills.
Michael Williams, an American student, took part in an Outward Bound course last year. He said:"We
learned lots of first aid skills, lots of natural history, lots of environmental facts, and participated in a wildlife
preservation (protecting) programme. Beyond that, my favorite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing."
Courses can last up to 40 days and are open to anyone over the age of 14. Students must be in general
good health, but do not need to be experienced in outdoor-sports. There is no selection process; everyone is
welcome, although new participants are advised to pick a course matching their physical power.
Most of the British courses take place in the Beacons in Wales. Another similar organization is the UK
Survival School, which includes courses on learning to live with the environment, sailing and winter survival.
On a basic survival weekend students will learn how to get water and food, how to make fire and cook with
it, to find and build a shelter, control survival life support, how to cross rivers, send off an SOS signal, and
to use compasses by day and night.
According to the leaders, such adventures are "an awakening, an exploration into unknown." Outward
Bound believes that participants will "use mind and body traveling some of the earth's roughest wildness
areas."
1. The advantage of the training courses is that _____.
[     ]
A. participants can make friends with others
B. participants can visit some places of interest
C. participants can experience different adventures
D. participants can learn how wonderful nature is
2. In the Outward Bound course last year, the most exciting experience Michael Williams had was _____.
[     ]
A. learning first aid skills
B. collecting facts of environment
C. preserving wildlife
D. rock climbing and sailing
3. What's the writer's purpose to write this passage?
[     ]
A. To introduce the training course to readers.
B. To persuade readers to take part in the training courses.
C. To tell readers the danger of this training course.
D. To introduce the wonders of the world to readers.

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course,
there have always been people who have looked for adventure-those who have climbed the highest mountains,
explored unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans. Now, however,
there are people who seek an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes
or even seconds.
I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place
(perhaps a bridge or a hot-air balloon)200 meters above the ground with an elastic (有彈性的) rope tied to
your ankles. You fall at up to l50 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is
estimated that two million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping. Other activities which
most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into
the sea from the top of high cliffs.
Why do people take part in such activities as these? Some psychologists suggest that it is because life in
modern societies has become safe and boring. Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly under threat.
They had to go out and hunt for food, diseases could not easily be cured, and life was a continuous battle for
survival.
Nowadays, according to many people, life offers little excitement. They live and work in comparatively
safe environment; they buy food in shops; and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they
become ill. The answer for some of these people is to seek danger in activities such as bungee jumping.
1. More and more people today ______.
[     ]
A. are close to death in sports
B. are climbing the highest mountains
C. are trying activities such as bungee jumping
D. are looking for adventures such as exploring unknown places
2. In bungee jumping, you ______.
[     ]
A. jump as high as you can
B. slide down a rope to the ground
C. fall towards the ground without a rope
D. attach yourself to a rope and fall to the ground
3. People probably take part in dangerous sports nowadays because ______.
[     ]
A. they lack excitement
B. they have a lot of free time
C. they no longer need to hunt for food
D. they can go to hospital if they are injured
4. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
[     ]
A. The Need for Excitement
B. The Boredom of Modern Life
C. Dangerous Sports: What and Why
D. Is Bungee Jumping Really Dangerous

Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a
typical (典型的) British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different.
Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later
and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying
themselves than cooking Sunday lunch.
Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and
cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any "leisure" until afternoon, after the dishes were
cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea. But now,
Britons can have brunch (早午餐) at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves. "You only
have two free days a week. You don't want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch
boring TV," said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.
"On Saturday you are recovering from the week," Biggs added. "Sundays are the last chance for the
weekend - you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work." In
the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. "Now
men seem to do that as much as women," said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study.
Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend
Sundays out of the house at the pub or playing football before lunch.
1. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because ______.
[     ]
A. They have no time to cook at home.
B. They get up too late.
C. They won't bother to cook themselves.
D. They will go to church.
2. Which of the following is NOT true?
[     ]
A. Britons used to go to church on Sundays.
B. Britons usually had a big lunch at home.
C. British women usually did their shopping during the week in the past.
D. British men did little housework at home in the past.
3. The text mainly tells us ______.
[     ]
A. what Britons did on Sundays
B. why Britons go shopping on Sundays
C. how Britons spend their holidays
D. the changes of the ways the Britons spend their Sundays
4. What can we infer from the passage?
[     ]
A. Men do more housework on Sundays.
B. Sundays in Britain might be very boring in the past.
C. No people go to church on Sundays now.
D. Britons all go out on Sundays.

Scientists studying the impact of climate change on the Arctic need to consider ways to reduce their
own carbon footprints(碳排放量), says Ryan Brook, a researcher who regularly flies north to study the
health of caribous (馴鹿). He calls on scientists to show leadership by examining and sharing ways to
reduce the impact of working in polar regions.
"The importance of the research is not at question here. It is important to our understanding of and
adapting to climate change. But we need to think about better approaches." says Brook.
"This is an issue for all scientists, though polar researchers often travel particularly long distances
using commercial air travel. We also rely extensively on small aircraft, icebreakers, and snowmobiles, all
of which produce large amounts of carbon. "
Brook studies the health of caribous herds in Nunavut and Northwest Territories. He works with
northern wildlife managers. This work typically takes him north five or six times per year and when he
calculated his own carbon footprint, he was not happy with the result.
"My research footprints are about the same as the annual footprints of an average Toronto resident.
Basically, I have two footprints-my own personal life, which is moderate, and my research footprint."
Climate scientists can rightly argue that Arctic research is a specialized field and the community of
scientists who travel north is relatively small. Even if all scientists working in the north reduced their
carbon emissions, it would not make a big impact on the global scale. For Brook, it's the option that
matters.
There are ways researchers can reduce the amount of carbon they use. Some helicopters use less
fuel than others. Solar and wind power are alternatives to gasfired generators. And while carbon offsets
(抵消) don't reduce the amount of carbon emitted, they are an easy first step.
"There aren't necessarily any easy answers, but we need to start talking about it." says Brook. "This is
particularly important for the next generation of scientists being trained and I hope to see them become
leaders in this issue."
1. The underlined word"It" in Para. 2 refers to________.
A. the research of climate change on the Arctic
B. the study of the health of caribous
C. the impact of working in polar regions
D. the reduction of polar scientists' carbon emissions
2. What did Brook find when he calculated his own carbon footprints?
A. His carbon footprints are more than the annual footprints of a Toronto resident.
B. His personal life footprints are more than the annual footprints of a Toronto resident.
C. His research footprints are about the same as his personal life footprints.
D. His personal life footprints are more than his research footprints.
3. Brook's opinion is challenged by the statement that____.
A. arctic research is very important
B. the Arctic is a special environment
C. the footprints of Arctic scientists are small
D. Brook's situation is not a common phenomenon
4. We can infer from the last paragraph that________.
A. we should take actions immediately instead of just talking
B. it's easy to start talking about the problem of carbon emissions
C. it's necessary now to pay attention to the problem of research footprints
D. the next generation of scientists are more interested in research footprints
