HARVARD, the top university in the United States, is a dream place for many students. Imagine being able to see how unique Harvard students are. Asking them what they learn. And how their classes are conducted.
This month, 300 students from different parts of China had an opportunity to spend a week with Harvard students. They gathered in the High School Attached to Fudan University in Shanghai where the Harvard College Association for US-China Relations Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC 2007) took place. Over 40 Harvard undergraduates took part in it!
Around 2,000 Chinese students applied online for the program, which included various activities. Wang Wenjing, 17, from Shanghai Jingye High School was one of the 300 participants to be selected.
Seminars (研討會)
Every day, the schedule was very busy filled with seminars, lectures, workshops (研習班), games and parties. Wang liked the seminars most.
Seminars are small classes with no more than 10 students. Wang could choose six from 40 different seminars to attend. A Harvard student led each one.
"They explored international issues such as US immigration (移民). We were allowed lively discussion and sometimes the only thing we did in a class was debate," Wang said. "To prepare for the next seminar, we often stayed up late doing research. No one could keep silent and it was fun to share ideas with others."
Celebrities’(名人) lectures
Each day, two or three lectures were given. Wang was excited that the lecturers were famous figures that before she had only seen on TV.
"I finally know why people are crazy about Yi Zhongtian. He is intelligent and eloquent (有口才的). Pu Bajia taught me how to overcome difficulties and plan for the future. All the lectures were inspiring," she said.
At the closing ceremony, Wang and her partner from Nanjing presented their workshop project. It was a survey of how Chinese view Americans, as an article about how Americans view Chinese is popular on the Internet.
"The program taught me what I could not otherwise learn in the classroom. Harvard students also let me know how important to be creative," she said.

HARVARD, the top university in the United States可知哈佛大學是美國頂尖的大學,自然也是很著名的大學。
And how their classes are conducted.可知conduct classes就相當于carry out classes。
They gathered in the High School Attached to Fudan University in Shanghai where the Harvard College Association for US-China Relations Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC 2007) took place可知這次活動是在中國上海被舉行的。
Over 40 Harvard undergraduates took part in it有40名哈佛大學的學生參加了本次活動。
A Harvard student led each one.
We were allowed lively discussion and sometimes the only thing we did in a class was debate可知在研討會上有大量的討論和辯論。
根據(jù)"To prepare for the next seminar, we often stayed up late doing research.表格里使用的是分詞做狀語用法,動詞prepare和主語構成主動關系,故使用現(xiàn)在分詞在句中做狀語。
【小題9】 inspiring  原詞再現(xiàn)。根據(jù)第三部分第二段All the lectures were inspiring可知這些演講都很讓人興奮。
The program taught me what I could not otherwise learn in the classroom. Harvard students also let me know how important to be creative原文中使用的是形容詞creative,表格中需要使用的是名詞creativity。

Garlic (大蒜) is one of the most common spices of the kitchen, and the good news is that growing garlic indoors is simple. Garlic can be easily grown at home from individual cloves (瓣), which is the most commonly used form of cultivating garlic than growing garlic from seeds. Here are some useful tips on growing garlic indoors.
Autumn is the best time to plant garlic. Garlic requires enough time to develop strong roots. In warmer climate, it can be delayed to late winter or early spring.
Ensure the container used to grow garlic is large enough for the roots to have enough space to grow. The larger the size of the container, the healthier and bigger the garlic bulbs (鱗莖) will be. The container should also have holes at the bottom so that the water can drain (流走) out easily.
Sow each clove vertically into the soil at a depth of one inch. Ensure that the blunt end (平端) is facing downward. In case of container gardening, the number of cloves to be sowed in each container depends on the size of the container. In case you are planning to sow more than one clove in each container, make sure that each clove is at least 5 inches apart from others.
For the best growth of the garlic plant, choose a sunny spot where there is enough air circulation (流通). This will aid evaporation (蒸發(fā)) of too much amount of water and prevent the soil from becoming too damp in case too much watering does occur. Window sill (窗臺) is a good place to put your container of garlic plant.
Once the clove has been sowed, cover the soil with a layer of mulch (覆蓋物) to protect the roots from extreme cold. Provide fertilizer at the correct time in right amounts, and proper watering. Once the garlic tips start appearing in the spring season, pull back the layer of mulch. Feed the plants once or twice every month with fertilizer.

Big storms, high waves, technical failures, loneliness, After battling hard times and danger for over nine months. British teenager Mike Perham made history last month as the youngest person to sail solo (單獨) around the world.
The 17-year-old made the record after he cleared the Panama Canal ( 巴拿馬運河) and then sailed through the Caribbean and home across the Atlantic.
Mike is only three months younger than Zac Sunderland. the 17-year-old American boy who had taken the crown as the youngest solo around-the-world sailor in July.
The two youngsters met in Cape Town in South Africa as they crossed the globe in different directions. Mike insisted they were not rival "No. It's two teenagers going out there, living their dream and having the adventure of a lifetime." he said.
Mike may be young, but he is no stranger to sailing adventures. He picked up the hobby at age 6 when his father took him out in a small boat on a local lake. Father and son sailed separate boats across the Atlantic when Mike was 14, making him the youngest person to cross that ocean solo. That record gave him the taste for this even greater challenge.
On the recent journey. the scariest moment for Mike came when his sailboat was hit by storms in the southem Indian Ocean.
"We were picked up by what felt like a 60-foot wave and threw down on our side at 90 degrees," he said.
"It felt like I was going right over. Stuff was flying around and I just thought 'Oh no'".
At other times, he had to dive into the Pacific and fix problems. He tied himself to the boat, jumped into the water and went to work with a knife in 30-second dives undemeath (在......之下) the boat to cut a rope away.

information given in the passage.
Secret Santas
On Christmas morning, Linda wakes up, and tries to imagine the wide-eyed surprise of children in another household as they unwrap the presents she carefully chose for them. Linda has never met the children, but that’s all part of the joy of giving as secret Santas, she says.
"It's an amazing feeling to buy gifts on an anonymous (匿名的) basis," says Linda.
"It brings a whole new meaning to the holidays."
Linda and Tony are an American couple living in Toronto, Canada, and Linda did charitable work as a member of the American Women's Club of Toronto. As the name suggests, members are U.S. citizens living in Toronto, who join together for fellowship and community service.
To find her "adopted" family, Linda goes to the local schools and requests a wish list for a family that's struggling to survive. Last year she helped a single mother with three children. The mother works as a cleaning lady in a nursing home.
"The list is always heartbreaking. They have an opportunity to ask for anything and do just the opposite, asking for basic clothes or simple toys," she says. "We always buy the kids a new winter coat, hats, and gloves." She also buys gifts for the parents.
Last year Linda asked the mother for a second wish list--one that didn't include the basics. "Every child should have a Christmas that sticks with them for a lifetime." She purchased iPods for the two older children and a video game system for the youngest."I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this," says Linda. "Pay attention to what's going on in your own backyard--no matter where you live."
The joy of giving as secret Santas is much sweeter when the gift is anonymous.
