【題目】How to Strengthen Your Willpower
Researchers find willpower is like a muscle—it may get tired from over use. So, if it acts like a muscle, can it also be strengthened? The answer is YES. 【1】
1. Ten minutes of reflection
Reflection will give you the fater results. 【2】 Researchers show that after just 2—3 days of practicing thinking for 10 minutes, your brain will be able to focus better, you will have more energy, and you aill be less stressed.
2. Work on your posture
Work on your posture for a 2-week period. Every time you catch yourself slouching(懶散), correct it by sitting up straight. This simple practice can vastly improve your perseverance.
3. Use your opposite hand
Select a chunk(塊) of the day to use your opposite hand. 【3】 And from personal experience, if you aim for more than an hour, you will unnecessarily tire out your willpower muscle.
4. Correct your speech
Change your natural speech. 【4】 Again, it takes willpower to consciously go against your instincts. It doesn’t matter how you correct your speech, as long as you change natural speech habits.
To get started, select a chunk of the day to practice and choose the words you will change. Personally, I tried not using contractions during work hours and it worked very well.
Above are some effective ways to strengthen your perseverance. Do not try to do all at once. 【5】 You should start small and gradually build up as your muscles get stronger.
A. Training your willpower muscle is like training for a marathon.
B. This even includes resisting the urge to say “hello” instead of “hey”.
C. You will be more mentally strong.
D. With the right practice willpower can be strengthened.
E. It can make your brain focus and resist the urge to wander.
F. Be more conscious of your automic decisions.
G. It doesn’t need to be more than an hour in order to get results.
【答案】
【1】D
【2】E
【3】G
【4】B
【5】A

【題目】閱讀七選五。
We all wish we had just a bit more time. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or springclean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.
【1】 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.
● Get Out of Bed Earlier
If you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That halfhour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been meaning to finish. 【2】
● Do the Important Tasks First
Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones.
【3】 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones.
● Reduce Interruptions
If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter. Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.
When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail. 【4】_ Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.
●【5】
A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day.
When you're working, work. If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break, go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with.
A.Stay Focused on Your Work.
B.Take Breaks When Necessary.
C.If you have an office door, close it.
D.If you work like this, you'll usually save time.
E.Would you want me to make your day longer?
F.I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long.
G.Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.

【題目】An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife, enjoying his extended family. He would miss the pay check, but he needed to retire.
The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He used shoddy materials to build the house. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.
When the carpenter finished his work and the employer came to inspect the house, he handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “my gift to you.”
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in a home he hadn’t built very well.
It is the same with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up with less than the best. At important points, we don’t give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that, we would have done it differently.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall, build wisely. It is the only life you ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. The plague (牌匾) on the wall says, “Life is a do-it-yourself project.”
Who could say it more clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.
【1】Why was the carpenter ready to retire?
A. He wanted to have a relaxed life.
B. He found a better-paid job.
C. He could still survive without working.
D. He was tired of his job.
【2】What does the underlined word “shoddy” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Beautiful. B. Best. C. Bad. D. General.
【3】What is the main idea of the fifth paragraph?
A. We should build a good house to live in.
B. We always regret what we have done.
C. We should try our best to do things well.
D. We prefer to react, rather than act.
【4】What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?
A. We should build a house wisely.
B. Life is a do-it-yourself project.
C. Building a house is like building a life.
D. We should have the right attitude towards life.
