4．My daughter Kelly is a cautious person．She needs to warm up to situations，is hesitant to try new things．When with close friends，she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants，"Girls rule，boys drool．"But when that comfort zone is not around her，she is shy and nervous．
This has been challenging for me at times．"Shy"is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me．But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence．This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team．This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels．And this year she completed her first kids'triathlon （三項全能）．
On Saturday，with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son's birthday party later in the day，we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon．We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her，we got all the equipment she'd need，and we kept talking about the race．But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn，she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times．She was nervous but trying to keep it together．
And then it was her turn．From the second she jumped into the water，my heart soared．My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen．She dominated（主宰） that swim，crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face．
I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life．It wasn't because she did a sport or anything like that．It was because she was afraid of something and conquered（克服） that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn't seen before．
All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling．She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day．I won the chance to see my girl shine．

9．What's on Your Pet's Mind？
In 1977，Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature's mind by talking to it．Her first experiments began with Alex．Alex was a one-year-old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language．"I thought if he learned to communicate，I could ask him questions about how he sees the world．"
At the time，most scientists didn't believe animals had any thoughts．They thought animals were more like robots but didn't have the ability to think or feel．Of course，if you own a pet you probably disagree．But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think for themselves．

Nowadays，we have more and more evidence that animals have all sorts of mental abilities．Sheep can recognize faces．Chimpanzees （黑猩猩） use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt．And Alex the parrot became a very good talker．

Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mental skills was a dog called Rico．He appeared on a German TV game show in 2011．Rico knew the names of 200different toys and easily learned the names of new ones．When Rico became famous，many other dog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were．Another dog called Betsy could understand 300words．
One theory for dogs'ability to learn a language is that they have ben close companions to humans for many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving （進化）．While animals can't do what humans do yet，some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intelligence，as well as physical appearance．

16．Are you smarter than your parents and grandparents？According to James Flynn，a professor at a New Zealand university，you are!Over the course of the last century，people's IQ test scores have gotten steadily higher---on average，three points higher each decade．This improvement is known as the"Flynn effect"，and scientists want to know what is behind it．
IQ tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge．Flynn believes that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment，but the improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity．So what has occurred in the 20th century to help people achieve higher scores？
Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect．Some suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general and the learning of test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test．Others have pointed to better nutrition．Babies now are born larger，healthier，and with more brain development than in the past．Another suggested explanation is a change in educational styles，with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information，which improves their problem-solving skills．
Flynn has limited the possible explanations after carefully examining test data and discovering that the improvement in scores has taken place in only certain parts of the IQ test．Test-takers are not doing better on the maths or vocabulary sections of the test； they are doing  better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving．For example，one part of the test shows a set of shapes，and test-takers must find the patterns and connections between them．
According to Flynn，this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases．Every time you play a computer game，you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps you do well on one kind of intelligence test．So are you really smarter than your parents？In one very specific way，you may be．
