For many people around the world, a subway journey means speeding from one dull station to the next, surrounded by too many uncomfortable, impatient people. But on the Moscow Metro, taking the subway is like walking through a national heritage site. Depending on where you get off, you'll receive a brief course in architectural movements and face colorful glass windows, marble(大理石)columns, gilded (鎏金的)mosaics and painted scenes from Russian history.
“These extraordinarily beautiful places are unlike any metro station I've ever seen," says Vancouver-based photographer David Burdeny.
When Burdeny, who himself has a master's degree in architecture, first found out about Moscow’s metro stations, he was struck by the work of art. In all, he has photographed 20 of the most beautiful stations.
Burdeny had originally planned to focus on Russian stations more generally, taking photos of examples in both St. Petersburg and Moscow.
“But when I saw the stations in Moscow, they just completely blew away the St. Petersburg ones,"he says.
Shooting in the subway sounds simple, but it is not without challenges. For one thing, Burdeny had to figure out a way to access them between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., when the stations were closed.
In the end, he settled on Arbatskaya Metro Station, whose vaulted (拱頂?shù)模?arches he found the most beautiful. But it also represented a challenge he was not sure he was able to overcome: conveying the hugeness of the spaces. The Arbatskaya platform, for example, stretches 820 feet.“Some of the arches are quite long,” he says. “When you enter them, they' re just so completely grand."

A. is a world-famous architect

A. when to take photos of Moscow subway stations
B. whether to work in St. Petersburg or Moscow

3.What does the underlined word “shooting” mean in Paragraph 6?
A. Firing bullets from a gun.
B. Taking photographs.
C. Making movies.
D. Throwing the ball at the basket.

I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question — What is a good person?
At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students, a young man of about 30 described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his five-year-old son were decorating the Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.
So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him,“Give him one of your toys.” At the words, the little boy quickly picked up one toy, and his father said to him, “No, no, give him your favorite toy.”
And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!” He cried; he refused. But the father, like a big tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.”
And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited in the living room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited and waited.
What do you think happened?
After a couple of minutes, his son came running back into the living room, his face lighted up.
“Daddy,” he said, “can I do that again?”
I think I have got the answer to the question.
1.From the passage, we can learn that in Mexico ________.
A. begging is looked down upon
B. begging is considered as a normal part of life
C. visitors all over the world treat beggars kindly
D. few people are living a poor life
2.The sentence “Daddy, can I do that again?” showed that the boy ________.
A. got pleasure by helping the little beggar
B. wanted to please his father
C. began to like the little beggar
D. wanted to be the little beggar’s friend
3.According to the writer, “being a good person” means ________.
A. being ready to give
B. being friendly to beggars
C. having the courage to correct his/her mistakes
D. being able to teach children to tell right from wrong

Name: Sam Champion
Hot job: TV Weatherman
Where: WABC-TV, New York City
When you were a child, did you plan to forecast wind, rain, and snow on TV?
I want to be a foreign journalist. I took courses in weather science at Eastern Kentucky University, but I majored in broadcasting news.
How did you finally become a weatherman?
My first job in the early 80’s was at the local TV station in Paducah, Kentucky. I did everything from turning on the lights in the morning to writing and delivering morning news. I put together weather forecasts, and become interested in them.
Back then, how did you forecast weather?
Independent companies collected computer information that showed, for example, how a single weather system might split into snow or snow mixed with rain. The information was often opposite and the job of a weather man was to study the information and make the best educated guess about the storm.
Has weather forecasting changed much with new technology?
Advanced computers, satellites, and Doppler radar(sound waves used to track storms) have made forecasting more exact. But we still know very little about how weather is shaped. So far, we just have theories.
Any advice for children who’d like to become weather scientists?
To me, weather is the most exciting field in the world. There are still so many more questions about weather than answers. After all, if we can’t foresee floods or hurricanes, how safe a society are we? Weather forecasting is wide open for scientists who love to solve puzzling problems. The next generation of meteorologists will unlock many of Earth science, and study meteorology in college.
Thanks, Sam
